Richard James Walkup, 87

Richard James Walkup, 87 of Kentland, Indiana passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016. He was in Snyder, Texas with his daughter and son-in-law, Bob and Pam Snedeker, where he had spent the past year.

Mr. Walkup was born July 21, 1928 in Watseka, Illinois to Ira and Marilla (Campbell) Walkup. Mr. Walkup proudly served his country in the United States Army 1950-1952. He married Dolores Whaley November 27, 1952. She preceded him in death on February 8, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his parents and six brothers; Ward, Curt, Bun, Bill, Tad and Jerry Walkup and his sister, Cecil Hancock. He was a member of the VFW, the Eagles Lodge and the American Legion. He was a member of the Newton County Community Band and he loved to play the drums. Other hobbies included telling stories, watching Purdue, the Cubs or any sporting event. He worked at Dormeyer in Kentland, then Radio Material in Attica before retiring from Western and Southern Life Insurance in 1991 when he and Dee moved back to Kentland.

Surviving besides his daughter and son-in-law are a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Jo Walkup of Effingham, Ill; five grandchildren, Angee Morton and her husband Bart of Decatur, Texas; Brian Crawford and wife Jae of Granbury, Texas; Erik Walkup of Mesa, Arizona; Katlyn Gerlach and husband Nathaniel of Evansville, Indiana; and AJ Walkup of Champaign, Illinois. Also, three step grandchildren; Bobby Snedeker and wife Beth of Williamsport, Indiana; Thadd Snedeker of Independence, Indiana and Tinker Snedeker of Pine Village, Indiana. He was also survived by 11 great grandchildren; Tanna and Kaden Morton, Brock Crawford, Riley and Cady Jones, and Jalen, Abbi, Lexi, Rylie, Owen and Zack Snedeker and many, many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Walkup will be cremated per his wishes and placed beside his wife in Kentland, Indiana. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for the spring. Share memories and condolences online at www.millerfamilyfuneralhome.com.
