Mortimer Cushman Obituary

MADELINE ISLAND - Mortimer Walker Cushman, 82, of Madeline Island, Wisconsin, passed away on January 26, 2017, at the Northern Lights Health Care Center in Washburn, Wisconsin, due to complications from heart failure. Mortimer, born March 10, 1934, in Racine, Wisconsin, was a longtime resident of Madeline Island, having moved there after resigning his position as Professor of American Studies at Bucknell University in 1971. A graduate of the Hotchkiss School and Yale University, he earned a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, and throughout his life maintained a strong attachment to letters, arts, and the life of the mind. In addition to teaching, at times Mortimer earned a living as a carpenter, brick mason, and gardener. He lived in a cabin that he built with his children and friends. He was a strong advocate for the arts, having served as the director of the Madeline Island Art Guild and as a member of the Wisconsin Arts Board. He loved deeply friends, family, feeding the local bears, the natural beauty of the island, reading to school children, and supporting causes of need. His cantankerousness, irreverence, and humor will be missed. Mortimer is survived by four children and eight grandchildren: daughter Brooke (Brendan Sullivan) of Pelham, MA, and their children Kyle and Cornelia; son Jonathan (Jennifer Cobb) of Paris, WI, and their children, Franklin and William; son Stuart (Susan) of Fox Point, WI, and their children, Charles and Robin; and son Lorimer(Talitha) of Monona, WI, and their children, Adelyn and Lyla. A memorial service will be held this summer with details of the service to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to charities of your choice. The Bratley Funeral Home in Washburn is handling the arrangements. To view this obituary online, sign the guestbook or express online condolences, visit us at www.bratleyfamily funeralhomes.com

I met Mortimer at an anti-war rally in 2002. We at once became fast friends, for we shared age, political views, and cultural preferences. We studied Spanish together at home and in Mexico; we worked on the same election campaigns, read some of the same books. I admired his zeal for social justice, tried to emulate his attraction to unpretentious people, often understood his impatience and frustrations, and envied his piety. It was a great pleasure at my advanced age to make a new friend. Circumstances make this for me a double loss.

Even such is time, that takes in trust
Our youth, our joys, our all we have,
And pays us but with earth and dust;
Who, in the dark and silent grave,
When we have wandered all our ways,
Shuts up the story of our days:
But from this earth, this grave, this dust,
My God shall raise me up, I trust.

The old men know when an old man dies. Mortimer Presente!

Dear Brooke. I found old pictures of us from over 40 years ago and was full of wonderful memories of you and your family. In trying to reconnect somehow I found your father's obituary. I am deeply sorry. I remember your dad baking bread, reading in bright sunny rooms, driving us places in a beige car listening to music, making delicious sandwiches, and mostly his patient and bemused acceptance of my constant presence in your home. His life sounded full and interesting. My warmest wished for your family.
