Frank Stellman Obituary

UNION GROVE - Frank Henry “Sailor” Stellman, age 90, passed away in hospice at the Veterans Home in Union Grove on Monday, July 24, 2017. Frank was born in Racine on July 21, 1927 to Frank and Hilda (nee:Univich) Stellman. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1948. Frank was united in marriage with Jeanne Hammill in May 1951 and they had three children – Kevin, Kim (Bremer) and Kelly. He owned and operated Sailor’s Grille and Recreation at 1318 Washington Ave in Racine from 1959 until 1979. Frank was also a professional pool player and promoter who traveled throughout the Midwest. Sailor began fabricating custom pool cues in the early 1960’s. He made many hundreds of cues for players around the world. Sailor was a professional photographer whose pictures have been included in national billiard publications. He also instructed many professional players in the art of billiards throughout his lifetime. Sailor appeared as a pro-advisor on Milwaukee’s Channel 6 Billiards show with Earl Gillespie in the late 1970’s. He was also an expert on Abraham Lincoln, collecting many artifacts of Lincoln’s life. Frank was a member of the Illinois Historical Society for many years. Sailor achieved recognition in 2015 when he was inducted into the National Straight Pool Hall of Fame in New York City. Frank is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and many professional friends and other family. There will be no service as per Frank’s request. A Dinner/Memorial is being planned for September and a date and a place will be published in the Racine Journal Times in the near future. All friends and family are invited.

My mother used to drive Sailor and Mosconi around. Sailor was my good friend. He was a role model and mentor to his pool students. He was one of the best of his generation. He was modest and humble despite his skill. He was an elegant crafter of pool cues. I still have a hustler cue he made for my mother, Julie Lunsford . Sailor was an expert on Lincoln and had a fine collection of civil war and Lincoln memorabilia. Sailor had a great sense of dry humor and an affinity for Frank Sinatra. He taught me some fine jokes and song lyrics. I will never forget him and the great times we had at Durangos with Charlie Tuna. It is an honor to know I was friends with a member of the billiards hall of fame. Rest in peace Frank Sailor Sellman.

Sailor introduced me to billiards and the 14-1game. I used to sit at the back table and watch Steve Mizerak, Dallas West and others on Friday nights when they might show up. I was a young Black kid and Sailor recognized my love of the game and encouraged me.

Rest In Peace. Taught me 14:1 when I was a teenager back in the early 70's. Helped me achieve 100 ball status.

Sailor will be missed very much. I was blessed and fortunate to meet Sailor a couple of years ago, in Illinois. He was very nice and shared some amazing thoughts and wisdom about the game. He will be missed. Rest in Peace. Keeping his family in my thoughts and prayers.

Sailor gave Gary Fiedler and myself jobs racking balls at the pool hall when we were in our early teens. He taught us more than just how to play pool, but how to become men. Gary and I went into the Army, he was killed in Vietnam. God rest your soul Sailor.

I'm so sorry to hear of Sailors passing. He made my pool cue in 1986 and I still have it. Thanks Sailor for all of the great sticks you made. RIP
