Joseph Donovan Obituary

Donovan, Joseph G. "Joe to some; Jerry to others" Born to eternal Life on June 18, 2016 at the age of 94. Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Catherine O'Brien Donovan. Both will always be loved and remembered by their five children, Kathleen, Patrick (Molly), Timothy, Dennis and James (Lori) Donovan. He was the proud grandfather of six grandsons: Kevin, Brian, Daniel (Cara), Stephen (Vicci), Adam and Casey and great-grandfather of five. He is also remembered by his brother Robert (Gloria), brother-in-law Thomas O'Brien (Kappy), and many nieces and nephews. A long-time resident of Wauwatosa, Joe was active for more than 50 years in his Wauwatosa parish, St. Pius X, where he volunteered endless hours and founded two dartball teams, both of which are still active today. As a charter member of the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin, Joe celebrated his Irish heritage throughout his life. He was honored as the "Irishman of the Year", led the St. Patrick's Day Parade, with his wife Catherine, as Parade Marshals and served as Sunshine Chairman for many years. He loved all things related to fishing and assembled a remarkable collection of fishing equipment he used whenever he had the chance. Most memorable was his sense of humor and very quick wit. He always met you with a smile and a story. Visitation begins Friday, July 8th at 9:30 AM at Christ the King Church, 2612 N. Swan Blvd, Wauwatosa followed by the Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:00 AM. Luncheon reception will follow at a nearby restaurant. Private interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Order of St. Camillus Foundation, 10200 W. Bluemound Rd., Wauwatosa, WI 53226 or Aurora ZIlber Family Hospice, 1155 Honey Creek Parkway, Wauwatosa, WI 53213, would be appreciated by the family.

I first met Joe over 40 years ago while working a college summer job at Nackie Paper Company. He and I worked together in the cutting room and I'll never forget his reaction to my playing music (current hits at the time). Needless to say...he wasn't a fan! Just a great cutting/dry sense of humor, never afraid to speak his mind but always had your best interests at heart. Not only loved his family and spoke so highly of them especially his bride Catherine. I've had the pleasure of still seeing him over all these years and send my deepest condolences to all of his remaining family. May he be resting in peace.

Joe was known as "the golden arm" on our dart ball team at St. Pius. We didn't win a lot of games, but, I think we had the most fun of any team in the Diocese, and Joe was always a big part of making it so. He was a man of enormous character - always very kind - with a sharp wit and a wonderful sense of humor.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Joe's family, especially his kids. He was always so proud of you and spoke of you often. I hope you understand how positively impactful your dad was to so many. May he rest in peace.
