I started at the zoo in 1984 and I was told that I was filling the void left by Jack. I spent a lot of time in the elephant house and learned to love them. I met Jack only once. I was the lion house supervisor by then and he came to visit Bob Hoffmann in Winter Quarters. Like so many other retired keepers he still wore his khakis. He left with a big hank of baling twine slung over his shoulder. I've been retired for two years now and I've run out of baling twine. It might be time to put on my khakis and see my old friends at WQ.
