Martine Meyer Obituary

Meyer, Martine (Nee Darmon) Died Sunday, July 28, 2013, at the home where she had lived for more than half a century with her family, friends and beloved dog Sahara at her side. Martine was born April 15, 1929 in Casablanca, Morocco to Armand (Amram) and Suzanne (Levy-Neymarck) Darmon. Immediately after the war, she left North Africa to study English at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She continued her education at UW-Madison where she received her Master's in English. She then started teaching French at UW-Milwaukee, commuting to Madison during this time to finish her Ph.D. in French. She taught courses in French language, literature and civilization as well as Francophone literature for more than 40 years as well as chairing the department for a long time. In addition to teaching, Martine also served as president of the Alliance Francaise de Milwaukee from 1956-1958 and 1998-2000. She taught African-American literature at Mohamed V University in Rabat, Morocco in 1989 while on sabbatical where she also helped organize a student exchange with UWM. She and her colleague Anthony Ciccone wrote the French textbook Teletexte in the 1990s using some of the information she collected in Morocco. As late as February of this year, she was teaching a class for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. She has also sponsored and participated in field trips in the Milwaukee Public Schools for the last twenty five years. Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie L. Meyer, of Milwaukee; a granddaughter, Kenza El Abdallaoui, of Milwaukee; and a sister, Nicole Chandler, of Oceanside, California. She was pre-deceased by her ex-husband of 25 years, John R. Meyer, formerly of Milwaukee. Visitation will be held Saturday, August 3 from 11AM-1PM at the Feerick Funeral Home, 2025 East Capitol Drive in Shorewood, followed by a memorial celebration. Burial will take place at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery on 64th and Burleigh at 2:30 PM followed by a reception at Martine's house. In lieu of flowers, donations in Martine's memory can be sent to the Martha Best/Martine Meyer Scholarship Fund, UWM Office of Development and Alumni Relations /P.O.Box 413/Milwaukee, WI 53201. Martine was the kindest, the most worm hearted hearted person I have ever known. She was a good listener and most knowlegeable but very humble, a very loved and very loving human being. I will always remember her dearly.

Martine is constantly in my thoughts, actions, and heart. The time spent with her in Milwaukee included conversations, concerts, grand cuisine, and much more. I have always remembered her insistence upon my completing the DMA and her insight into navigating academic life. She was the queen of mentorship. Thanks to Stephanie and Kensa as well for making me part of the extended family.

I missed this notice and therefore missed her funeral. I was lucky to meet Mrs. Meyer and drive her to visit her ex-husband just before he passed away. What a remarkable and interesting woman.

A great loss for UWM and Milwaukee. I regret never having had the opportunity to take a course with Mme Meyer, but I spoke with were frequently during La Table française at UWM each week. To borrow another World War II song, "Till we meet again..."

Mme. Meyer was my mentor and role model. I took at least five courses from her, and still have my notebooks from my days as a French and English major at UWM (Class of 1969). She was a brilliant teacher and fabulous person. She inspired me to go to graduate school for my M.A. and Ph.D. and to become a college professor. For nearly 40 years of teaching, I thought of her often as I planned my classes. I tried to make them like hers. She played a definitive role in my life, and I owe an immeasurable debt to her. I send heartfelt condolences.

Madame Meyer was the best French professor I ever had. Her passion for teaching was obvious to all her students. She had a commanding presence that no one could deny. She was one of a kind.

I was truly sorry to hear that Martine passed away. She was an excellent member of the Foreign Language Faculty at UWM whom I admired. After my retirement I would see her at Bastille Days, and at showings of French films at UWM. I got to know her father, and had several interesting conversations with him in French about his life in Morocco.
Martine will be much missed.

I was never afforded the pleasure of meeting Martine, but being a French teacher in the community and having worked at UWM for five years, I have heard others speak so highly of her and her dedication to making French education accessible and captivating to area students. What an inspiration to all of us she was!
