Mark Vetter Obituary

Vetter, Mark F. Passed away peacefully on January 18, 2014, after an extended but well-fought battle with cancer, at the age of 68. Mark was the beloved husband of Nancy (nee Weber), and loving, devoted father of Christopher (Jamie) Vetter and Laurie (Chad) Lehman. He was a very proud, involved grandfather and "Papa" to Kaitlyn, Austin and Michael. Mark is also survived by his siblings Steve (Alyssa), Rick, Greg, John (Jenni) Vetter and Julie (Ken) Podpeskar. He was the consummate family man, husband, father and friend, and will be well remembered and dearly missed by all who knew him. Mark had an incredibly positive influence on many people he encountered throughout his life and was always willing to lend a hand to those in need, whether personally or professionally. Mark was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 17, 1946. He graduated from Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Mark attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania where he played football on an athletic scholarship and was fortunate to meet his wife Nancy. After graduation in 1968, he was accepted to the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. After a year on the USS Polk County, he spent the remainder of his military service in Yokosuka, Japan at the Communication's Station. Upon his return from Japan, Mark attended Marquette University Law School and graduated with his Juris Doctorate degree in 1974. Mark enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the field of law. He spent most of his career at Davis & Kuelthau, where he was managing partner until he left in 2010 to found his own law firm, Buelow-Vetter, from which he retired in 2012. Mark was well-known and highly respected in the legal community as a trusted mentor and an expert in the area of Labor and Employment law. He was a Past President of the Labor Law Section of the State Bar of Wisconsin, a Past Management Co-Chair of the State and Local Government Bargaining & Employment Law Committee of the Labor and Employment Section with the ABA, and a Past President and Board Member of the Wisconsin School Attorneys Association. Mark had many special achievements in his career. Among them, he was named to Best Lawyers in America numerous times, and in 2013, was the ABA's Arvid Anderson Public Sector Labor & Employment Attorney of the Year. Mark was also on the Board of Advisors for the National Sports Law Institute at Marquette University Law School. One of Mark's greatest passions in life was the game of golf. He enjoyed playing it as often as possible, anytime and anywhere. He especially enjoyed playing while vacationing in Scotland and Ireland. Mark was an active member and a Past President at Bluemound Country Club. He also Co-Chaired the 2010 Western Junior Tournament and the 2011 U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament. The family would like to thank all of Mark's physicians and caregivers at Froedtert Hospital and at Zilber Family Hospice for their kind, compassionate and professional care throughout Mark's illness. Our many thanks go out to all of the friends and family who provided loving support during Mark's valiant battle with cancer. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 22 from 4:30-7:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 23 at 11:00 AM at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 1755 N. Calhoun Road, Brookfield. There will be a private family burial at Southeast Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church or to MCW Cancer Center - The Triumph Fund (Medical College Wisconsin Office of Development, 8701 Watertown Plank Road, MIlwaukee, WI 53226, please include Mark's name).

To the Mark Vetter Family,

It has been a year and a half since Mark's passing but I wish to express my belated sympathies to you and your family. I was a senior at CMH '63 and a Marquette grad '68. Mark was an outstanding athlete and an outstanding student during the years that I knew him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and always had something good to say. I am sorry for your loss and will offer my Mass this weekend in his memory. Sincerely, Michael Kamps 980-229-8286

As a young kid in the Elm Grove and Brook Dale Tennis Family's. I remember you and Mark as a young beautiful married couple. I remember the births of Laurie and Chris. As time went on, I always thought of your family as one of my blessings of my childhood. When Mr and Mrs Vetter passed my heart was heavy, with hearing about Mark I know feel as if I have turned the page of my childhood. Wish you blessings Nancy.

Mark was one of the "big guys" whom I looked up to in elementary school. He always had a kind word, and he was clearly very courageous.

I truly appreciate the work that Mark did for Milwaukee County, but more than that I appreciate the type of person that Mark was: intelligent, confident, honest, hardworking, and wonderful person.

I remember him, even after half a century, as the lead character in "The Princess & the Swineherd". (I was the Town Crier). HE did a great job of making it fun to rehearse, and fun for the audience to see.

I remember the first time I met Mark. He was with the "other" Mark; what a pair! Mark Vetter's conscientious attention to detail and grasp of the finer points of the law compelled nicknaming him "Mr. Perfect." I am grateful for the opportunity to have known such a fine gentleman who unfailingly placed others first.

January 22, 2014

Mark took me with him to three different law firms over 40 years; I have never worked with anyone who was as skilled, positive, fun to be with, and effective as Mark. We will miss his energy, his leadership, and his personality terribly. Mark was more than a colleague, he was a friend, a good friend, who made the practice of law fun and rewarding.

He can never, and will never, be replaced.

Nancy
We are all so sad to hear of Marks passing. His attitude during this battle can only be described as heroic. The common thread from the "Monday Golf Group" was "what a great guy Mark was". I know you and your family knew that but so do all of us here at Wildcat. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

In my capacity as mediator and arbitrator I worked with Mark on many occasions. Mark was a strong and very able advocate for his clients, but was always fair, reasonable and a gentlemen. He was always interested in finding mutually agreeable solutions to problems so that labor and management representatives could continue to have good and lasting relationships. He was respected and liked by everyone.

Dearest Nancy and family,

We are so very sorry for youor loss. Jack and I loved soul music and married in 1968. We still drag out an album by The Temptations and dance around every now and then!! I remember one day driving Andy to a tennis tournament on the expressway. A car passed us and the driver was feverishly waving. It was Mark and Laurie. We waved back! He had a concerned look on his face. I had heard a noise from my car which I had not heard before. (I must have had a Temptations tape playing!) I exited on Good Hope Road with Mark waving to stop. I then realized I had a flat tire!! No cell phones at the time. Mark pulled us over, probably saving us from an accident or worse. I have never forgotten his kindness that day and his genuine concern. I know you will miss him terribly Nancy, he sure fought a tough fight to stay with you and your family. A couragious MAN.

Dear Nancy & Family,
Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. What stands out most in our minds was the dignity and grace both of you showed over the past 4 1/2 years. Always a smile, never a complaint, simply getting on with life with a positive attitude and a belief in God's grace. You both have been great friends and great examples to us. We will always be there for you. Please accept our deepest sympathy.

Mark was passionate about the game of golf. His leadership in the restoration of Blue Mound Golf to its original glorious Seth Raynor design will serve as a tribute to Mark's determination as was his recent battle with cancer. We were constantly amazed at how strong Mark was in the face of his long and difficult battle with cancer. But then, that defines Mark's character - strong, disciplined, positive, determined, principled and so much more. A great friend for many years, he will be thought of often and missed always. Our deepest sympathies go out to Nancy, Laurie, Chris and the entire family.

I sat with Mark a number of times as a union representative on the opposite side of the table. Mark's presentation was second to none often times acting as a mediator between sides constantly searching for best scenario resolutions. Rest assured that God has greeted Mark with open arms and welcomed him into his pain free peaceful home. God bless you Mark and may He offer your family peace during this difficult time.

I hired Mark back in the late 70's for some legal representation. I wasn't much more than a kid and he was just a few years older. What an inspiring guy to be around. He knew his business and was a wonderful guy. I'm saddened by his passing. The family is in my prayers.

When I started working in the human resources department over 20 years ago as an assistant, Mark would come in for meetings with our Directors and CEO. He was one of the few who would always take the time to stop and greet me by my name. That was the kind of man Mark was. He was very kind and good-hearted and I have missed working with him. Rest in peace Mark. International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.
