Jean Manion Obituary

Manion, Jean Patrick Jean Patrick Manion, 93, passed into the loving arms of God on February 25, 2014. Beloved husband of Huetta for 62 years. Loving father of Teresa (Mike Sauer) and Paul and Mary. Grandfather of Erich. Further survived by dear cousins. A research scientist, Jean grew up in Sheboygan, WI, and received his bachelor's degree at UW-Madison. He began graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, when he was called to serve as a scientist on the government's WWII Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, TN. He worked on basic chemistry leading to the production of the atomic bomb and is noted in Glenn Seaborg's book "The Plutonium Story." After the war, he accepted a fellowship at the University of Notre Dame, completing his Ph.D. in physical chemistry under Milton Burton, who founded Notre Dame's Radiation Laboratory. After graduation, Jean married the love of his life, Huetta. He then joined Olin Industries doing defense research in Alton, IL and New Haven, CT. In 1956, Jean joined Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee and was research group leader in developing the first fuel-cell powered tractor in 1960. The tractor is part of the Smithsonian Institution collections in Washington, D.C. His research in many areas generated more than 35 patents. In 1966, Jean and Huetta founded Landmarks Gallery, a full-service art gallery and restoration studio. A devout Catholic, Jean lived a deeply faith-centered life. His reading and conversation often centered on the confluence of science and religion, a passionate interest. his faith and love bring us comfort as we miss him dearly. Visitation will be Thursday, March 6 at HOLY ASSUMPTION CHURCH, N. 71st. and W. Orchard St. (1525 S. 71st.) West Allis, beginning at 4:30 PM followed by The Mass Of Christian Burial at 6 PM. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Sheboygan. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name appreciated to Holy Assumption Parish or Christ King Parish in Wauwatosa or The Medical College of Wisconsin.
