Thank you all for your support and generosity in remembering my Dad. He was a lion with a gentle soul.
His humor was stark and had very little filtering in it...which anyone that knew him found oh so amusing.
The lion has passed, reunited with his beloved son Lance for that man to man handshake and full embrace. I will miss you Dad for your guidance, strength, courage and love. Yet find you even closer to me as you live deeply in my heart.
Your loving daughter~

I got to know Lance at the Air Force Academy. We were two Milwaukee guys and athletes going thru that great program. The Academy named one of the two cadet dorms in Lance's honor. His strength as a prisoner of war remains legendary. I met Marc at one of the art fairs in Miami. My deep condolences to Syl's family and friends. (Roger Zoeller, Washington High..1959. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Sijan, Marc and Janine on the recent loss of your husband and father. As an Air Force veteran myself (1968-72), I've kept the name Sijan in my thoughts and prayers over the years. I trust my father, a WWII veteran and my mother have already met Mr. Sijan and Lance in heaven and are honored to call them friends. God Bless you all!

I knew Syl and Jane through Lance, their oldest son. Lance, Charlie Larson and I met standing in line to register for Bay View High School Fra-Soph Football in 1957. After a few years, Syl & Jane moved from the original home to South Shore Drive, across Nock Street from my parent's home, at the top of the hill overlooking South Shore Park & SS Yacht Club. I was standing on the SSYC dock the day Syl gave his run-about too much power and rammed the freshly varnished stern of Dr. Hankwitz's cruiser. Syl had a great attitude. No one was hurt, and Syl had insurance. Dr. Hankwitz did not find the situation amusing. Those of us on the dock did.
The attached picture was taken in front of the Sijan residence on South Shore Drive in February of 1960. Charlie Larson and I are behind Lance. I have nothing but fond memories of Syl and the Sijan family during this time and the years that followed.

I trust I am not the only person to ask Mr. Sijan directions at the Frontier Airlines Center. He allowed me the simple pleasure to laugh at myself.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I spent most of my youth living directly across the alley from the Sijans. Mr. Sijan was a welcoming, smiling face every day (which was most) that I saw him as I walked to my car parked on Nock. Even on those days I didn't feel much like talking to anyone, I found myself very naturally exchanging smiles, waves, hellos, or long conversations with Mr. Sijan. He had a wonderful spirit and he was a wonderful man.

I knew of Lance and Marc from Bay View HS. My most memorable meeting was with Jane at a famous jeweler in downtown Milwaukee, not knowing that she was married to Syl. Having met Syl later, we realized that we had Lika, Yugoslavia in common; my mother and his family were from Lika. I joked with Syl that among Serbs, the men from Lika were considered "the tallest and most handsome," to which we both had a hearty laugh. Looking at Syl and his sons, I believe this to be true. +Sylvester+ will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Vechnaya Pamyat brother Sylvester.

Several Years ago, I drove my old car in the Veterans Day Parade, and drove my car as a memorial to Lance. I was honored even more so because I was driving a fellow Serbian. Syl, you will be missed,

To a great man who worked hard all his life to make sure his family was always taken care of. I loved listening to your stories over and over (and over) again of how you returned back to the "old country" with your father when you were a young boy. May you find peace...

my sympathies to the family, I have so many fond memories of the Bay View Gang parties with your dad and get to-gethers with the family. He was always so thoughtful of others and had a genuine concern for everyone's well being. I will keep him in my prayers as well the family.

September 12, 2011

My sympathy and God bless this grateful and giving family. I was fortunate to be an Air Force reservist down at Billy Mitchell field for many years. Every Christmas the Sijan family would serve the Christmas meal at the Sijan Dining Hall named in honor of their very brave son and brother. The fact that they would take the time and serve us was always very humbling to me considering the sacrifice this family had already made. My thought and prayers are with the family. God bless you Mr. Sijan as you are reunited with your son.

I didn't know Syl or the Sijan's personally that well, but I was always treated like family by them. From one Bay View High Alumni, my thoughts and prayers are with the Sijans/family and friends..

Sly Sijan was a great and thoughtful man and he will be missed dearly. He lived a full and righteous life; his wife Jane completed him as a man to immolate!

Marc Sijan was my second mentor, behind my father: Ed Falkowski and he taught me the core of my work-ethic as a young 15 year old boy (my first real-job) working out of his Bay View studio in the late 1970’s. Sly was instrumental in molding Marc and that family tradition has had a life-long lasting impression on me to this day; rest in peace Sly. The Sijan family will always warm my heart with fond memories of what it means to show up every day ready to put your “skin in the game!”

I grew up with Syl and Jane's oldest son, Lance. I had the priviledge of being in their home on many occasions. They were a very strong and loving family. All three of the children; Lance, Marc and Janine grew up to have unique talents and each are accomplished in their own right. When we were old enough to have "house parties" for New Years, etc. we usually went to the Sijan's home because Syl and Jane were usually working at Mary's Log Cabin. A couple of years ago I thanked Syl for his hospitality. After that I relayed the story to Marc who said: "What's he going to do now, ground you?" They are truly a unique family.
