Alan....My old friend from times long past. My Lord, how I loved to play in your big band in high school and after. We saw Kenton together at George Devines. You introduced me to that glorious music which I still enjoy because of you, my Man.

Dear Todd, Julie & Family,

May you be comforted by your faith, family & friends. May you think of your Dad everytime you hear a song sung or played that he loved; and everytime you run in to an old student who learned to play an instrument taught by your Dad. Remember all that he taught you too Todd, I love what you wrote about him.

When my mother called with this news I immediately was flooded with memories.

I don't know about the rest of you but this was one of a few houses I was allowed to go into when my parents still were a work. No, Not to play with Terry or Tracy or Tristann or Trinny. My time was spent with Todd! Yep, Todd had this shelf in his closet that allowed for many, many hours of play time.

I can remember like it was yesterday. Trucks and action figures. Terry was the oldest so we were out of her league. She had this bright smile and lisp. Tracy was so pigeon-toed! I used to think she would trip when she ran. Todd, the only boy, didn't care that I was a girl. We were neighbors, rode the school bus and were in class togerther. Trinny and Tristann were the little ones who liked to hang with us 'big 'kids. Poor Tracy was big sister baby sitter to us all :)

We would be lost in hours of playing and smelling Mrs. Gaulke's cooking when this deep voice, super tall, always smiling man would saunter into the house calling. We all knew, including me, to come running whether upstairs, down stairs or from outside!

Mr. Gaulke would sing, tell us stories on the patio, chase us until we fell out screaming in laughter! I remember Todd and I standing on the electric box in the far left corner of their back yard, hodling hands and jumping into the gras clippings. The next thing I remember was jumping but not landing!! He had grabbed us and scolded us because it was an electric box don't ya know! Yep, I got sent home.

Then there was Mrs. Gaulke, always with the bright smile. Never was there a time I remember when she didn't have one. She wore these ponchos with big fuzzy balls at the end of the ties, too.

Then we came of age to play instruments. How cool was it to walk into Brass Bell on Port Rd. and get a big hug from the owner. Hey don't be jealous of the perks of a neighbor! There he would be with a big hearty greeting and smile. His voice bellowing about not hearnig any shrills from my flute because he knows if I have been practicing or not! Mrs. Gaulke would be right there behind the counter. Off to the basement practice rooms I would go.

How heart warming is to all these years later to see Mrs Gaulke in WalMart or Pick n Save when I am home and she recognizes me. Still with the smile on her face.

Mr. Gaulke raised a fine family and brought music to our lives. May you all be as fortunate as I to have known him, his wife and children.

Please accept my deepest condolences and cherished memories during Mr. Gaulke's life's celebration and homecoming.

My heart is so saddened by this news. When my mother called me I became flooded with memories of this iconic man I had the pleasure of calling my neighbor.

Everyone has their memories. Mine stem from the early years at Indian Hill all the way through Nicolet and years thereafter. I don't know about the rest of you but the Gaulke's was one of the few houses I got to spend time in when my parents still were at work. It didn't matter that I was there to play with Todd, the boy with four sisters. He had this cool shelf in his closet that we hung around in doing nothing but play. Next thing you knew this super tall, deep voiced, always cheerful man would call us! We knew not to hesitate. We would all come running downstairs or up from the basement.

Some of my best memories were spent hanging at their house, playing with Todd, being chased by Mr Gaulke outside, jumping off the electric box into the grass clippings. I think I remember a dog chasing us too!!

Terry was so tall and had this amazing head of hair. She had the brightest smile like her mom! Tracy was so pigeon toed! I used to think she was going to trip when she ran! Just like her parents she always smiled and would look out after us when I came over. Tristann and Trinny wanted to play with the 'big' kids. Dolls were their thing. Todd and I liked the trucks more! Tracy was the big sister baby sitter :)

Then we came of age to play an instrument! How cool was it to walk into the Brass Bell on Port Rd and hug the owner. Yep, I got LOTS of looks. Hey those are the perks of being a good neighbor :)

It was an equal treat seeing Mrs. Gaulke in the grocery store or behind the counter. She ALWAYS has a smile on her face. She wore ponchos with big puff balls on the end of the ties!! To still be recognized by her in WalMart or Pick n Save when I am home is so heart warming.

I hope it is memories like these that will keep Mr. Gaulke's spirit alive in us all. Please accept my deepest condolences and cherished thoughts at your time of his life's celebration and homecoming.

I just learned today of Al's passing, and I am saddened that I heard of this loss to the music community so late. Al was a devoted musician, who put color, race, and creed aside, and recognized a persons passion for music. Al gave everyone who crossed his path an opportunity to pursue "their" passion of music, and despite how difficult it can be at times, aided in fullfilling their dreams. Whether the opportunity was in teaching or working at one of his stores, we were always welcome in Al's congregation (stores). I can honestly say that Al and his families confidence in me, which concluded in a teaching opportunity, made me a better musician and more importantly gave me confidence to succeed in the business world (unfortunately outside of music). Many years after I departed the Brass Bell family of teaching, I still hold onto the relationships with students that I taught at Brass Bell. I've learned that several of my students continue to be successful in the music industry and like myself, some took on other careers, but still have a passion for music. I know of several teachers and associates like Todd Marino, Angelo (who got me a job at Brass Bell), Cory, Chris, Chaz,Julie,Jeno,Heather, and myself (I apoligize for anyone I left out) who were all part of something special in the mid to late 90's Bayshore Mall teaching crew, that can reflect on the appreciation for the opportunity that Al and his family gave us. God Bless Al and his family and as I heard him play trumpet when the store at Southridge closed down, I hear TAPS in my head!

Man, did the Father's choir of angels just get better! And the band... Whew! What can I say to the Gaulke family except that we praise God for you sharing Mr. Gaulke with us for as long as you did!
What a man - he was the embodiment of joy unspeakable. That smile, those twinkling eyes, that booming voice, that laugh that could roll the seas! Mr. Gaulke wrapped the gift of music with love & acceptance. Those of us who were blessed to call him teacher, friend, & neighbor have a lifetime to continue to unwrap his gift! Love to all the T's!!!

Sharon: My deepest sympathies on the passing of Al. I started playing in Al's dance band when I was in 8th grade and had a great time. I learned a great deal from him and I will always remember him very fondly for that. I played in Lake Band and Racine Elks while he directed. My entire high school and part of my college educations were spent joining Al in many of his musical pursuits. I also enjoyed one summer doing roofing work with him. I am certain that many of his great group of friends and family will be surprised to learn about that. My wife Susan also played in his Lake Band. We will miss his spirit and hold you and your wonderful family in our hearts. God Bless You.

Al was my first trumpet teacher at age six. I remember taking Saturday morning lessons in his mother's house and later at his first home on Pine Avenue in Bay View. I purchased many instruments from Al when he opened the Brass Bell during my college years. We became friendly competitors when I managed Cascio Music for 25 years. He inspired me to make a career in music, and for that I am eternally grateful. Rest in Peace, Al, you have touched many people in your short stay here. God Bless You!
Sharon and Family, you are in our thoughts and prayers!

Sharon and Family -

I too was part of the Son Rise Singers group those many years ago. His wit, love, faith and unending patience were sterling and motivating. Even after all this time, I always will remember to phonetically pronounce "in egshells-ese deo" at Christmas! Love and prayers from the Lathams.

I looked up to Al like few others in my life. As a member of the Son Rise Singers he took some of us that may have been less lovable and loved us - warts and all as they say; he certainly brought out the best in us. So many fond memories of Al will not only be remembered for the rest of my life, they will be cherished.

August 29, 2012

Dear Sharon & family,
I was so sorry hear that "we" lost Al. He was truly a friendly and gracious man, that wanted to teach everyone about the joy of music. I was a member of Son-Rise Singers at Fox Point Lutheran church. Alan patiently worked with our rambunctious group to make us better singers so we could share the word of God with others. It was such a blessing to see you and Al at our SRS reunion a few years ago. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time.

I remember my first time meeting Mr Gaulke at a Racine Elks Band rehearsal in 1968. The man sold us all in believing in ourselves. 1968-1970 Elks Band years were the most fun experiences I have ever had in Band. Of course, being National Champs every year was pretty good too.
We all need people like Al Gaulke in our lives to make us dream and live our dreams.
I am so sorry for your loss and so glad he was able to touch so many hearts.

I knew Al all my younger life from riding to UWM band class at 8:30 AM, (we were always late) riding with him to an Alan Gaulke Dance Orchestra gig,(we were always late)or any place we needed to be.(we were always late) Playing with Al in the Bay View band, his band and Lake Band was a great time. Al had no fear musically and his sense of humor and his way of making us do our best and still having the best time possible is something I won't forget.(after the gigs at Dino's pizza place were legendary) Alan helped me to grow as a musician and teacher and I will miss him as will many others. I send my deepest sympathy to Al's family. I knew Al in our business dealings between the Getzen Company and The Brass Bell. Years past, he used to stop by the Getzen Company and pick up instruments. He was always very friendly and I enjoyed visiting with him. I wish his family well, during this difficult time.

To Al's family you have my condolences.
Al died too early. He and I talked about our mortality when we played together in the band at Bay View High School. He always warned me I was going to kill myself cause I was too reckless. I finally took him serious at age 45.
I sure did respect him as friend and musician. He and I played in a bunch of other stuff including UWM band and his own dance band at Brown's lake resort. I'm going to miss him knowing he's gone and unreachable except by prayer.
I know God will keep him busy making the angels sing like . . . well angels.

Sharon and family,
Can't begin to list all the memories I have from our friendship and fun with you and the Son-Rise Singers at Fox Point Lutheran Church. I know we tested Al's patience alot, but his encouragement and enthusiasm helped us to become a closely knit group of fairly decent singers! I will always cherish the time spent together. My love to all of you.

Mr. Gaulke was my music teacher at Raymond Elementary school where he taught band and me the coronet. I played for many years and just last year bought a new horn. I've thought a lot about him over the years and regret I did not take the opportunity to tell him how much he influenced my life. Thank you for sharing him with us...

What a wonderful legacy Mr. Gaulke has left. I was his student at Yorkville Elementary in the 60's and still have my trombone. I don't play any longer, but the love of music he nurtured has led me to be very involved in music organizations in Wausau, especially the Symphony & Band. I'm sure there are many more of his former students that have gone on to support the Arts because he touched their lives. He's truly someone who deserves a celebration of life.

Dear Sharon, We were saddened to learn of Al's passing, and fondly remember our friendship, dating back to the years when we were members of King of Kings Lutheran Church. Al was truly a talented musician, and always "ready, willing and able" to enthusiastically share his faith and musical talent with others. Our heartfelt sympathy to you, Sharon, and your lovely family, as you grieve and heal from your loss. Unfortunately, we are unable to attend Al's memorial service. Diane is now in a memory care nursing home with advanced Parkinson's disease and early stage dementia. But please know that our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time. Al touched so many lived through music and his charisma. Generations of families have been changed with his choir direction and the family store. I bought my first guitar from Al when I was 14 and the next when I was 16. I still own them today. You whole family has touched my life. God bless all of you and strengthen you at this time. Bach gave us God's word, Motzart gave us God's laughter, Bethovern gave us God's fire, God gave us music that we might pray without words. Thank you for the music.

Alan was a friend many years ago. I was in The Lake Band with him, and when he went to direct the Racine Elks, I followed him there. While I was in high school and college I took lessons from him on French Horn. I kind of recall him having one of the old T-Birds and he dated my older sister, who was also in Lake Band, a few times. Alan was a great guy who I lost touch with after my three years in the military. Lost touch, but often returned in my memories over the years. My condolences go out to Al's family.
