I was quite saddened to read of Jeff's passing. My deepest condolences to the Kaufman and Brennan Families.
When I would read or hear of someone who had contracted ALS my thoughts would turn to Jeff and wonder how he was doing. I would like to thank Jeff and Jan for bringing awareness to me about ALS and to so with such strength, courage and grace. Jeff had that unexplainable gift that only the special possess and we are the fortunate to be touched by it. Aloha

My condolences to the entire Kaufman and Brennan families. I'll see you at the Evening of Hope. I remember the year that Frank Darabont, (director of "The Shawshank Redemption") came and spoke those immortal words "You can get busy living, or you can get busy dying - the choice is yours." I remember Pat repeating those words to me a few years later as I faced challenges in my own life - challenges so much smaller in perspective.
Jeff's battle against this horrible disease was always an inspiration to me and I was particularly struck by the words in the Milwaukee Journal article which echoed what Marna had told me at lunch about a year ago:
One other thing, even more important, kept him going.
"He wanted to see us grow up," said Nora, now 28. His other children are Ben, 27; Sarah, 24, and Clare, 22.
"He showed up at our track meets and our graduations," she said. "We had a dad for longer than we were supposed to. It was all about family and finding a cure for ALS."
Jeff, you will be sorely missed but your legacy lives on and partly due to your efforts, someday we will find a cure for this disease.

Jan and Family,
While I have been away from Milwaukee for a long time, Jeff and all of you have been in my thoughts and prayers. Sophia and I send our condolences to you all.
I remember when Jeff first started practicing law at what was then GG&R. He was smart and serious but at the same time playful and fun. Working with the likes of my Dad, Stan, Richard, Mike and Tom you not only needed to be a great lawyer but you also needed to be able verbaly spar with tall the different personalities in the firm. Jeff was a zealous advocate for his clients and he was also easily able to hold his own with the gang back at the office!
He was very helpful to me when I started out as a young lawyer .I learned a great deal from him about both the technical and the softer sides of being a courthouse lawyer.
His battle with ALS was nothing less than heroic. I know how much he loved his family and actually am not at all surprised that he fought the terrible disease for so long in order to see the kids grow up.
I also know and appreciate all that he has done to raise not only funds, but awareness of ALS and help give hope to those who suffer from it.
I'm sorry that I cannot be there in person to pay my respects. Jeff will truly be missed by many, myself included.

From the first day that I met Jeff Kaufman on the UW track team, he showed the determination and never quit attitude that he displayed for 54 years. Now as a high school teacher and coach, I often use Jeff's life story as a lesson on how to face adversity and then make the most of an incredibly tough situation. Jeff may have never really known how many, many people he positively touched. My sincere sympathy to the entire Kaufman family.

Dear Jan and family,
I am not sure you would remember me but I am the best friend of Bonny Byal (Jeff would come up in our conversations ever so often.) I would like to extend my deepest condolences to all of you and hope that the fond memories of Jeff can lighten some of your grief. He certainly was a man of great courage and his fight against ALS is truely legendary. He has shown people, with and without disabilities, how to remain true to ones self, to fight for what you believe in and above all, to never give up. I am glad that I knew Jeff (even if not so well) and he has certainly left an impressive and hopeful mark on my heart. I am sure he will come up in mine and Bonny´s conversations for many years to come. May God be with you all.
