Kaufman, Jeffrey A. Atty. Attorney Jeffrey A. Kaufman of Brookfield, Wisconsin, passed away on March 11, 2010, after a 21-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). He is survived by his wife Jan Clare (Brennan) and his four children Nora Marie; Benjamin Brennan; Sarah Melissa; and Clare Eileen. He is also survived by his parents Dr. Wayne S. Kaufman and Alice L. Kaufman, both of La Crosse, and his siblings Melissa K. Gelatt and Oliver J. Kaufman. Jeff was born on October 20, 1955 in Logan, Ohio. Growing up in La Crosse, Wisconsin he excelled as a star athlete for La Crosse Central High School, where he still holds school records in the long and triple jump. He continued his track career in college, winning four varsity letters as a member of the University of Wisconsin - Madison track team. Jeff graduated from Marquette University Law School in 1982, and embarked on a brilliant legal career with the law firm of Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown, being named partner in 1988 and continuing to work even after he was diagnosed with ALS in 1989. Jeff dedicated the last twenty years of his life to his family, his friends, and his tireless devotion to working to find a cure for ALS. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, March 15, from 3:00PM until the time of service at 7:00PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Jeff Kaufman Family Trust or ALS Association - Wisconsin Chapter.

It is with a heavy heart I offer you my sincere condolences. I have so many memories of Jeff from our college days. Take care of yourself and may you have peaceful thoughts.

I was quite saddened to read of Jeff's passing. My deepest condolences to the Kaufman and Brennan Families.
When I would read or hear of someone who had contracted ALS my thoughts would turn to Jeff and wonder how he was doing. I would like to thank Jeff and Jan for bringing awareness to me about ALS and to so with such strength, courage and grace. Jeff had that unexplainable gift that only the special possess and we are the fortunate to be touched by it. Aloha

I remember the year that Frank Darabont, (director of "The Shawshank Redemption") came and spoke those immortal words "You can get busy living, or you can get busy dying - the choice is yours." I remember Pat repeating those words to me a few years later as I faced challenges in my own life - challenges so much smaller in perspective.
