I was so surprised to hear of Kay's death in a fire in her home. Kay hired me in 1972 right after I graduated from high school to work at Temple Shalom part time for clerical work. I worked at Shalom through my early college years to put myself through nursing school at UWM. Having been raised Catholic and not exposed much to other religions, Kay was open, kind, inclusive, and taught me much about the Jewish faith. I will always remember her kind, gentle, thoughtful ways. She was very endearing. I'll never forget how she helped me to see my gifts at a time that was very difficult for me. I will say prayers in celebration of her contributions to many. It is my prayer and hope that she died a peaceful death. It is a reminder to thank those who have touched you in a special way while they are still with you..as she may have never known how she influenced me. I was ready to drop out of college, and she was my cheerleader, I went on to get my MSN and PhD. Hats off to Kay!

To the family of "Kay" Sykes,
We knew your dear Mother since the time she was the secretary for Rabbi Harry Pastor at Congregation Shalom. I had the please of working with her at the Temple. Later she bought my Mothers home on Santa Monica (1988) and she gave us parking privileges during our holidays. She was certainly a dear, kind person and we'll miss her Holiday card.
