Alice Stayer Obituary

Brinkman Stayer, Alice Lucille Today, we celebrate the life of Johnsonville Sausage co-founder, Alice Lucille Brinkman Stayer, who passed away from natural causes on February 23, 2013, in Naples, Florida. Stayer co-founded Johnsonville Sausage with her husband, the late Ralph F. Stayer, in 1945. Since the company's beginning as a butcher shop in the small town of Johnsonville, Wisconsin, it has grown to be the No. 1 national brand of sausage and is also available in about thirty countries outside the United States. Today, the company employs approximately 1,300 members. Stayer was the tenth of fourteen children born to John and Mary Pechauer Brinkman, of Ahmeek, Michigan, but the family relocated to Milwaukee after the mine, where John worked in Michigan, was closed. While Stayer received a college scholarship during the Great Depression, she turned it down to continue supporting the family by working as a secretary. Alice and Ralph F. married in 1938 and began working toward achieving their dream of owning their own business. In 1945, their dream became reality, when the Stayers, along with friends Carl and Anna Hirsch, founded Johnsonville Sausage. When Carl Hirsch passed away, the Stayer family partnership was formed. Alice and Ralph F.'s children, Ralph C. and Launa, joined the business and helped grow Johnsonville into an international sausage company. In recognition of their great contributions to the meat industry, Alice and Ralph F. were inducted into the Wisconsin Meat Industry Hall of Fame in 2000. Perhaps most clear to those around Stayer was her passion for family. She took great pride in her two children, Ralph C. Stayer and Launa Stayer-Maloney; as well as her ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Additionally, she always had a special relationship and bond with her large "extended" family at Johnsonville Sausage and throughout the community. Alice and Ralph F. were known as extremely generous philanthropists who gave kindly to help those in need in their community. From the Ralph F. and Alice Stayer Boys & Girls Club in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to The Stayer Park in Plymouth, Wisconsin, and the Golisano Children's Museum in Naples, physical evidence of the Stayers' generosity can be seen in many places. Stayer was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph F. Stayer; her parents, John and Mary Pechauer Brinkman; her sisters, Mary Elizabeth Bickel, Martha Cecilia Brinkman and Agnes Rose Emmons; her brothers, John Henry Brinkman, George Joseph Brinkman, Emmett Frank Brinkman, Earl William Brinkman, Ralph Anton Brinkman, Albert Oricen Brinkman, Robert James Brinkman and Julius Adolf Brinkman; and her brother-in-law, Samuel Crum. She is survived by her two children, Ralph C. (Shelly Reilly) Stayer and Launa Rose (Paul) Stayer-Maloney; ten grandchildren, Julie (Alejandro) Palomares, Jennifer (Samuel) Shaus, Jill (Anthony) Bonnett, Michael (Nicola) Stayer-Suprick, Laura Stayer, Ralph Francis Von Kass (Sara Gilbert) Stayer, Patrick (Jennifer Murray) Stayer, Jonathan Wagner, Brittany Wagner and Brooke Stayer-Wagner; and thirteen great-grandchildren, Nicholas DeRidder, Amelia Rose Palomares (Jordan) Haley, David Alejandro (Lauren Morris) Palomares, Amanda Michelle Palomares, Owen Bauer, Ethan Bauer, Harry Stayer-Suprick, Rex Stayer-Suprick, Ralph Lokin Bedi Stayer IV, Una Sewell, Christopher Bonnett, William Bonnett and Mira Stayer. She is further survived by her sisters, Ruth Wollenschlagen and Rita Crum; brothers-in-law, John (Donna) Stayer, Raymond Stayer and Robert (Henrietta) Stayer, as well as many other loved relatives and friends. A mass of Christian burial will take place at 12:00PM Noon, Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church at 8th Street and Huron Avenue in Sheboygan. The Rev. James E. Connell, pastor of Holy Name will officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the church on Saturday from 9:00AM until the time of Mass. Entombment will take place in the Chapel of Eternal Light Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Sheboygan County Foundation, c/o John Grey, 6913 Country Lake Circle, Sarasota, FL 34243; or Lake Country Academy, Attn.: Carla Koepp, 4101 Technology, Sheboygan, WI 53083. Condolences may be sent to the fami- ly by visiting: www.lippertfuneralhome.com. The Lippert-Olson Funeral Home has been entrusted with Alice's arrangements.

Ralph and Alice Stayer were two of my parents most beloved friends. I have such great memories of the meat market in Johnsonville and then later Naples. Joe and Mary Kovacic (teasingly called "jose and Maria") enjoyed your parents in the most unpretentious way. The Sheboygan -Naples contingent had experienced so much in their lives that they knew how to love life. I know I have Naples photos somewhere of the women in their white pants and the men in their bright golf togs. Ralph and Alice were amazing human beings whose example stands the test of time.

Dear Stayer Family, The Heinz family offers our condolences and prayers for the dear souls of Ralph and now Alice.
I have often told the story of the little butcher shop on Penn Ave at the "tracks" to friends when they are curious about a little town called Sheboygan. So many here in the west have no idea as to how big "Brats" really are and I make sure I spread the word.
I recall when Dad "Dr. Hap Heinz" was close with your folks and we upon occasion visited the farm and slaughter house where it all started. I remember the parties Mom and Dad had where Ralph and Alice attended. I recall because they seemed to be the "life" of the party with such great senses of humor and a love of life.
I particularly recall the day when our activities were interupted when "Ralphie" had severed his finger on the band saw. All in a days work for Dad, and the emergency run to Johnsonville, but stressful for the family.
What a wonder obituary for a wonderful loving and giving family. All the success earned and certainly warranted.
Hap passed in August at 91 in Tempe,AZ and Mom now 88 in the continuous care home also in Tempe.
May our Lord Jesus grant them eternal rest and an eternity bathing in the light of his light.

Dear Stayer Family, "Aunt Alice", as we used to call her when we were growing up, was a lovely and grand lady! She treated us with such kindness and love - we adored her, (and, of course, Ralph also). Every time we saw her, and I mean, every time, she was always laughing and smiling! We are so sorry for your loss and Sheboygan's loss!

Ralph, Launa & Family,

When I first started working part-time at JVS in 2004 in the reception area, I had the privelege of meeting two very proud people; co-founders, Ralph & Alice Stayer. Alice always made quite an impression on everybody with her infectous smile. She would always say to me "Hi honey". Quite often she would say "Got to check how everything is going. Are my kids here?" I'll never forget what she said to me one day as she was hurrying out the front door. She was so happy, practically kicking up her heels, she raised her right arm up and said, "I'm so proud of those two kids of mine!" Alice was quite a feisty little lady with a giant personality, that loved life to the fullest. An Icon that won't be forgotten!. May she rest in peace.

My sympathy to the family of a gracious lady. My husband & I met her years ago on the parking lot of Publix in Naples and a lively conversation followed. She was very proud of the Johnsonville brand & spoke glowingly of its beginnings. We never saw her again but never forgot her friendly manner. May she rest in peace.
