Clara Sperl Obituary

Clara E. Sperl passed away, surrounded by family and friends on April 11 in her home at Thane 12 days shy of her 93rd birthday. She was born in Portland, Oregon on April 23, 1919, the 9th of 14 children born to Harry and Clara Lutz. She grew up in Portland and married Walter Sperl in 1940 and moved to Bremerton, WA as a new bride.

In 1946 the family moved to Juneau and settled at Thane, living there for 66 years. Walter and Clara had 4 children, David (Ann), Dennis, Moretta Rieger (Keil) and Donald, who they lost in the Vietnam conflict. Her 3 children, 12 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren survive her.

Clara loved Alaska, Thane, and her life there. She loved to fish and often could coax a nice king on her line between Dupont Dock and Pt. Salsbury. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed making a dinner for the many who came to visit from near and far.

Clara's family would like to express their appreciation to Hospice and the caregivers that provided care to Clara. She expressed a desire that any charitable contributions go to Hospice and Home Care of Juneau at 419 6th Street, Juneau, AK 99801 in her memory.

A memorial service is planned for Clara at on Monday May 28 at 2PM at the Andrew Hope Building (formerly ANB Hall) at 320 W. Willoughby Ave.

Dear Moretta and Clara's boys, I have never met you all. You are my cousins and I love you all. One day i would love to meet you. I am Kappys daughter Victoria/vickie. I loved my aunt clara very much even though we didnt see each other that often. But when we did, it was as though we always had. I am always interested in my cousins because we are all a part of a very special family. I am so happy that Clara saw my mama and her mama before she passed. What comfort this is for all of us. Clara loved and was loved. We will never forget her, nor her lebkugen (sp.) and her bird calls.

Through a twist of fate and the "miracle" of internet technology, I met my sweet friend, Mrs. Sperl. Calling her "Mrs. Sperl" was forbidden. Every time I slipped up and addressed her formally, she corrected me immediately and insisted that I call her Clara. I think it was her way of saying, "Welcome to my family".

Although she and I often visited on the phone and by mail, I never met Clara face to face. I was fortunate to have known her son, Donald, as he and I were in the same company of the 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1968. I'll never forget Donald and I'll never forget his mom. If I heard Clara's voice or her laugh today or 10 years from now, I'd recognize it immediately.

During the numerous telephone conversations that she and I had, I learned a lot about her husband Walter, her family, her life of adventure, her courage and spirit and her love for Alaska.

She is missed at our home in Louisiana. At times, recently, when the phone has rung in the late afternoon, my first thought is "Clara". I always looked forward to calling her and her calling me. She ended every conversation with, "I love you" and I believe the words came from her heart. I am so grateful to have known her for a short time and so thankful that she left this life surrounded by her loving family and friends. Nobody could have deserved such devotion and loving care as much as she.

Clara was freindly, outgoing, sharing and a great neighbot at Thane. She was a Pioneer having lived through much of the growth of Juneau from the early days. Her stories were wonderful.
