Phyllis Newby Obituary

Newby, Phyllis Jean (Enegren) Christ follower, cherished wife, adored mother and sister, beloved Grammy and precious friend to so many, passed peacefully into eternal glory on April 7, 2016, surrounded by her loving family here on earth and in heaven. Born in Wichita on October 17, 1936, to Paul Enegren and Vivian (Kuhns) Enegren Wilson, Phyllis grew up nurtured in the love and truth of Jesus Christ and lived out that love and truth every day of her life. She attended Wichita North High and West High Schools. Following graduation, she married her sweetheart and lifetime friend, Waller Jerome Newby, and for 59 years, they built a close and loving family. When Waller went home to heaven in 2012, her heart broke, and it was her faith in Christ that enabled her to live out her life mission bringing glory to God through her love for others and her uncanny ability to make everything beautiful even when the loss of her best friend was followed with her cancer diagnosis. Above all else, Phyllis safeguarded and tended to the well-being of her family and home that defined her. Her home exuded extraordinary visual and sensual beauty, always immaculately ordered, a haven of rest and peace, exuding Christ's love. Physically beautiful and ever stylish, Phyllis belied the strength and intelligence that lay beneath her soothing voice and elegant manner. Focused, organized, and self-disciplined, she completed one successful project after another and always on schedule. She taught upholstery classes in West Wichita community for 50 years, was a strong influence in the establishment of the Wichita Ice Center, and for more than 30 years, taught the Christian Home class, mentoring hundreds of young women. She and Waller also mentored hundreds of young couples through Bible studies in their home. Long before there was a DIY channel, Phyllis was a DIY expert. Need a tape measure? A wrench? No problem. Phyllis would have one with her. Her son-in-law, John Anderson, recalled how she once phoned him for advice on fixing her yard sprinkler system. She then taught herself so well that by the next summer he was calling her for advice. The generosity of her spirit led her to help her family and friends with home improvement or decorating dilemmas. Especially dear to family members was what they lovingly came to refer to as 'Phyllis' bag of asymmetrical tricks'. Through her life, she held those she loved close and blessed all she met with her calm reassuring manner and uncommon patience. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Waller; her parents, Paul Enegren and Vivian Wilson; and her brother, John Wilson. She is survived by her children, Dr. Randy Newby (Marybeth), Kim Newby, Kelly Anderson (John), Julie Newby, all of Wichita, and Dr. Cory Sise (Matt) of Hawthorn Woods, IL; brothers, Phillip Enegren (Linda) of Wichita, Dennis Enegren (Barbara) of Huntsville, AL and Gus Enegren of Las Vegas, NV; stepmother, June Enegren of Wichita; grandchildren, Cortney Woodruff (Justin), Sarah Dugan (Brent), Dylan Newby (Chelsea), Laurel Anderson, Madison Anderson and Drew Anderson, all of Wichita, Dr. Cameron Ledford (Emily) of Fairway, KS, Ryan Newby of Nashville, TN, Henry Sise and Abbie Sise of Hawthorn Woods, IL; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials have been established with Starkey, Inc., 4500 W. Maple, Wichita, KS 67209 and His Helping Hands, 1441 E. 37th St. N., Wichita, KS 67219. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, at Central Christian Church, 2900 N. Rock Road. Downing & Lahey Mortuary West. Online tributes may be sent to the family via www.dlwichita.com

My deepest condolences to Phyllis' family. She was truly one of my favorites. She was beautiful inside and out. I will forever cherish the memories I have of her going to Worlds of fun with me and my mom and sisters and how she carried her own diet dr. pepper in her purse. She didn't hesitate to go on every very single ride with me without any fear. We laughed until we cried. I still smile and giggle when I think of the time spent with her. She had a way of making everything right.I love you Phyllis. You are forever in my heart.

Bradley will miss his Great-Grammy! We love you!

While I have known Randy and Mary Beth for years, it has only been since Waller died that I had the pleasure of meeting Phyllis. Most of this time she faced tremendous physical challenges, but handled it with such grace. My condolences to the entire Newby family.

Years ago when I was a single twenty-something and new to truly following Jesus Christ, several families in my new church opened their hearts and homes to me. Waller and Phyllis were one of those families who loved on me and let me inconvenience their lives. I was given an open door to their home. It was Phyllis who helped me choose my wedding colors, it was Waller who visited us when we moved to San Diego. Later, when we were with World Impact, I received a surprise package in the mail: a beautiful skirt, sweater, and blouse set-just my size! Included was a note: "It's my birthday today so I'm sending YOU a present. Love, Phyllis" Thank you all for sharing your home and parents with me.
I hope the God of all Comfort is directing you to the scriptures which remind us in heaven we will cast our crowns at the feet of Jesus and worship. No more tears, no more pain, no more sorrow. Your mama will be perfectly healed-no more sin! God is good. Worthy is the Lamb. (1 Thess.2:8)
Love and prayers, Shari Steen Hobbs

So sorry and sad to hear about Phyllis. She was the coolest mom I knew when Cory and I were in Jr. High and HS and spent time carpooling to and from Christian Challenge. There was a Ferris wheel in the back yard! A restaurant booth in the kitchen! The station wagon was always full of projects. I still have the Phyllis original velvet bridesmaid dress that I wore in Cory's wedding. My sister, Jill took Phyllis' upholstery class and loved it.
I wish I could come to the funeral tomorrow. Cory, Kim, all the Newbys, thinking of you all.

I remember years ago, when Phyllis was a little girl - she came into this world beautiful and remained that way all of her life. She shared her many talents with us and always had a soft kind word. May she be at Peace and we all see her again someday.

Thank you Mom for all those hours at the skating rink!

I have lost my best friend and it is breaking my heart that I will not be able to attend the celebration of Phyllis and her amazing life. I am out of town and will not be able to return in time.

I knew when I met Phyllis over 20 yrs. ago that she was special and have had that proven so many times.

One thing that we shared was our love for Scottish Terrier dogs, and we each had several in our life. Each of us had so much joy from our Scotties.

Phyllis and I laughed, cried and generally filled many hours shopping, and just enjoying life. I know how important her faith was to her and surely it brought much comfort to her.'

I was blessed to have the chance to visit Phyllis about a month ago and now I am so grateful for that time. I was able to remind her of some of our adventures and I told her how much she meant to me. Her friends and adventures were spread far and wide and enjoyed by many,

I could write pages but will be brief as I want to tell you, her family, how sorry I am for your loss and I will keep you and Phyllis and Waller in prayer. Please know that I would be there for her services if it were at all possible.

Peace and God Bless.

How do I begin? Phyllis was my longtime friend. So many memories flood my mind amidst tears at her passing. We co-ed the Christian Home class for 20 plus years. We were neighbors and she would call on me to rescue animals that were "trapped" in the cement "pit" off the basement room. Her grandchildren became like mine and Bo, the scottie would come over to visit and I would call to let them know where he was! We were skating Mom's and traveled all over to put Cory and Robin on ice. I love all the children, grandchildren very much. I am praying Comfort to surround you and knowing God has reunited her with Waller, the love of her life. I am coming to the service Tuesday.
