Monty Fey Obituary

NEWTON - Fey, Reverend Dr. Monty (Pete) Lee, age 75, passed away Nov. 20, 2011 at his home in Newton, KS. He was born in Blackwell, OK. on June 20, 1936 to Carl and Avis (Judd) Fey. On Aug. 3, 1958, he married Bonnie Unruh at New Hopedale Mennonite Church in Meno, OK. Monty attended Cooper grade school and graduated from Newton High School in 1954. He later attended Emporia State University, where he played on the baseball team, then graduated from Bethel College in 1958 with a degree in business. He subsequently attended McCormick Seminary in Chicago IL receiving his Master of Divinity in 1965 and his Doctor of Ministry (DMin) in 1982. Following ordination in the Presbyterian Church USA in 1965, Monty served a Presbyterian church in Beaver, OK from 1965 to 1967 and subsequently became an Assistant Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in Ponca City, OK from 1967 to 1969. He was then called to Edmond, OK where he was senior Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church until 1980. While in Edmond, he led the successful construction of a new Chapel and Sanctuary. In 1980 he followed a call to Garden City, KS. During this time, the church burnt in a tragic fire and he once again led a project to construct a new church. Monty moved back to Ponca City, OK to serve as head pastor from 1988 to 1999. Following retirement in 1999, Monty served as interim pastor within multiple communities in South Central Kansas until summer of 2011. During his entire ministry, he served on multiple Presbytery and Synod committees. Monty was a visionary who enjoyed life and people. An eternal optimist, he thrived leading various civic organizations in every community in which he lived. Monty was blessed with multiple, lifelong friendships to whom he was very loyal. After moving to Newton, he enjoyed coffee at Drubbers, classical music, golf at Hesston, fishing, reading and Kansas State athletics. He was most recently President of the Newton Public Library Board. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his daughter, Elizabeth (Tim) Yoder of Pella, IA; sons, David (Laura) of Mission Hills, KS, and Paul (Marian) of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Thomas, Cathryn, Sarah, and Emma Yoder; Emily and Andrew Fey; and Pete, Robin, Maggie, and Mitch Fey; sister, Sandra (Lynn) Woodworth of Arkansas City, KS; and brother, Tom (Gay) Fey of Wheatridge, CO. Dear Bonnie and Family, Monty was my pastor from 1978 to 1980, and my mentor from 1997 to 1999 while I was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Perry, OK. He was the pastor I aspire to be: full of faith, full of hope, and full of love for God and all of God's children. During a time of vocational despair, he said to me: "Tim, you don't need a bigger church. You need a bigger vision of the church you're in!" Of couse, he was right. During this difficult time, may you all have a bigger vision of God's promises to both Monty and to us, the promise of everlasting love and everlasting life.

Bonnie and family,
I'm very sorry about Pete's passing. I have fond memories of you and Pete from when I was a kid visiting you in Oklahoma, to the support from both of you in our time of need, to being a dear friend to mom since then.

You, your family, and Pete are in our thoughts and prayers.
