Janet Rhodes Obituary

Rhodes, Janet Mae Of Wichita, KS, passed away on July 31, 2016, at the age of 61. Janet grew up in Wichita and attended East High School before graduating from Wichita State University, with a BA degree and honors. Janet began her work career as an Activity Coordinator at the Lake Afton Boys Ranch before joining the Sedgwick County Detention Facility as an Activity and Independent Living Therapist. She then started as a Case Manager at Big Brothers/Sisters of Kansas where she proudly worked for 25 years before retiring as the Director of Compliance. Janet married her High School sweetheart Brian in 1980, and celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary this year. Along with gardening and reading, Janet and Brian loved to travel, which along with their love for antiques allowed them to explore the country and meet many new friends. Her greatest childhood dream was to travel to Europe and most importantly, Paris, France, which she was fortunate to do many times. One of the most memorable of those trips was shared with her extended family of mom, sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew as they explored Paris and London. Spring Break vacations were also a highlight as the family would explore new destinations together with "Mom's in tow" for twelve consecutive years. She was very proud of her nephews and niece. Shawn, as he grew into a talented scholarship basketball player at KSU and a wonderful new father. Colten, for his success in tennis and as he graduated from Engineering at KSU and started his new job at Spirit, and Cara, for her success in tennis and continuing education at KSU. Janet had many wonderful memories of the family farm growing up, and in particular, learning to drive on dirt roads with her grandpa when she was just 9 years old. She and the family have since shared the farm with many friends who have been able to share the same joy with their families. Janet truly cherished her relationship with her friends and their families, and always felt immensely proud and blessed to be a part of their lives as they grew. Janet was preceded in death by her father, Sylvester R. Lansdown; brother, Steven Ray Lansdown. She is survived by her loving husband, Brian C. Rhodes; mother, Doris M. (Roger) Lansdown-Pendergraft; sister, Linda L. (Steven) Anderson; nephews, Shawn (Sarah) Rhodes, Colten Anderson and Chris Lansdown; niece, Cara Anderson; and great-nephew, Hudson Rhodes. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 4, 2016, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2016, at East Heights United Methodist Church. Friends are encouraged to bring a photo of, or with Janet to the services. A memorial has been established with Serenity Hospice Care, 9415 E. Harry S-302, Wichita, KS 67207. Downing & Lahey Mortuary - East Chapel. Share tributes online at: www.dlwichita.com

I just today learned of Janet's passing. I had no idea and am so incredibly saddened to have learned. To Janet's family and especially her sister Linda and most prince of a guy you would ever meet her husband Brian, you have my most sincere thoughts and memories. Janet was just an awesome sole and I will certainly miss the encounters, however infrequent. A wonderful family with a star role model. I am in shock and very sorry the family lost Janet at such a young age.

Last night I was shocked and saddened to hear the devastating news of Janet's passing. My heart goes out to you, Brian, Doris, Linda and family. My memories of meeting all of you at the pie shop in 1972 are special to my heart. Janet was always so sweet. She made me feel like family. Having sent me on a better path, to this day her goodness remains a positive influence in my life. At the pie shop Janet made the cinnamon rolls, Ann made the pie crust and I cleaned the mess, loving every minute. The grief I feel is overwhelming and I am filled with sorrow and wish I had stayed in touch. Somehow the years have become decades, but I have never forgotten the incredibly special, Janet. You are in my thoughts.

Brian,
Everyone here has expressed the same sentiment that's on my heart....That this is just so heartbreaking, that Janet was a wonderful, loving, kind soul, that she will be sorely missed and that our heart goes out to you and your family. But, I have to add this: After losing two siblings three months apart, you feel a loss that you just can't imagine is real. You will feel that emotion, too. After the service is over, some friends only call or come around sporadically, when you go back to working...there will be a feeling of sadness that will wash over your entire being because of the love you shared with Janet. But, that old saying that time heals all wounds is true. Your wound now is deep, and trust me, it will never completely go away; it just gets a little less painful. Like when you scrape your knee and it first hurts like hell, but then a scab forms and it feels a bit better, and then the scab falls off and it feels fine. But now you have a scar in place of that scab that will forever remind you of that scrape. You'll laugh when you remember how you got it, but also remember how bad it hurt at that time. Janet's love and life is your scab. She will never leave your heart, mind or soul. Your life together was one that most of us dream of having. You were so blessed. When a memory pops up, that's Janet reminding you of your life together. When a memory brings tears to your eyes, CRY! That's Janet saying, "Hey, Brian, I'm still with you and don't forget it!" That familiar song you hear, that movie or picture that you see that will trigger a memory of her is the blessing that will be given to your heart to say, "Okay, Janet, girl! I know you're here! Thank you!" It will not be easy, but you'll be strong for HER. She deserves that. I love you and wish I could be there to comfort you. But, you know the moment I get back to Wichita, you'll be the first person I call. I will truly miss her! May God continue to comfort and bless you my friend. Call me whenever you want! xoxo Beano!!

Brian & all,

I'm heartbroken and stunned today to hear of your loss. Janet was such an amazing person. My memories of those incredible years at Wichita East HS go so deep. Janet was such a gracious, fun and genuine friend to so many. She lit up those hallowed halls with her smile.

It may seem off-the-wall, but I have this memory of the incredible grace and beauty Janet displayed when ice-skating. It seemed like a special glimpse into her soul to watch her skate. She was just amazing on the ice.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Brian,
My thoughts have been with you since I learned of Janet's death. It's hard to find words to express my sorrow. Knowing her as a Gamma Phi when she was in college, working with her at Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and most recently witnessing her dedication and effort on our capital campaign, gave me a true understanding of her thoughtfulness, kindness and friendship. She will me missed by me and many others.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Janet and I were pledge class sisters in Gamma Phi Beta in 1973. She was such a wonderful soul who made you feel good every time you saw her! So many great memories of our college days! I last saw her at a luncheon for our pledge class a few years ago and she still had that bright
smile that lit up the room. We had a lot of laughs that day. Condolences to you and your family, heaven just received a great one.

Will miss Janet and her smile! She was our pledge class trainer at the gamma phi beta house in 1976. She was a fantastic leader for a crazy group of girls, but she got the job done. In the
last 2 years she has worked endless hours on our gamma phi capital campaign. She made a real difference. Keeping her family in my thoughts, miss you Janet.

I have so many wonderful memories of her - college days spent playing Spades at the Gamma Phi Beta house, Hippodrome, and spring break of 1976 when we packed up the Orange Nova and headed to Padre Island. So much fun and laughter! Janet was a true friend and such a strong woman - someone you could always count on. I will miss her sparkling smile and her wonderful, infectious laugh! Please know that Dale and I have you in our thoughts and hope that you find comfort in the knowledge that Janet was loved and cherished by so many. May she rest in peace.

Brian, Tremendous sadness to hear of Janet's passing. I believe the last time I saw you together was at Angelo's many years back. I think I first met Janet in my sophomore at East. I think it was with the spiritual group "All God's Children". It seems she carried that Spirit throughout life. To quote from the book of Hosea; 6,2: He will revive us after two days; on the third day he will raise us up to live in his presence. I believe she now is one of All God's Angels. Best Regards, your old friend Kim Shoemaker

So many memories over the years. I'll share two. I remember how surprised Janet and I were to run into each other at a family reunion in about the 7th grade. Apparently we are distantly related, so we affectionately referred to each other as "cuz"☺
The next one, since Janet was 16 before several of us I remember her hauling us around in her parents station wagon (surely we weren't out tee-peeing!!)
Even though lots of us don't see each other often I feel our East High Class of 1973 has a real bond! Janet and Brian have lent to that in a big way! My heart aches for you Brian, and the rest of her family We will all miss her dearly!

I've known Janet since our middle school days at Robinson Jr High and have always cherished her company and friendship. She was a beautiful soul, extremely generous and always wiling to offer a friendly ear or help when needed. The last several weeks showed everyone how strong and brave Janet truly was. I will forever be inspired when I think of her. To Brian, Doris, Linda, Steve, Roger, Colten, Cara, and the rest of her extended family, we offer our sincerest condolences and love. She was a special lady. Rest in Peace my friend.

Janet Mae, I cannot wrap my heart around the fact that you are gone. Not a Christmas will go by that we won't make your favorite peanut clusters, carmels and toffee, with a toast of wine to celebrate your extraordinary life! I laugh when I recall our first candy making on Volutsia. The guys had gone outside to the backyard and we placed our pan of carmels on the floor of the back porch to cool, only to have Brian come in wearing them on his shoe! We laughed so hard!! I will miss you dearly! You were the sister I never had

Life on this earth will never be the same without Jan's shining soul. I met her 10 years ago and from that moment on she, Brian, Linda, Steve, Doris and dear Colten and Cara treated me like family. I had some great times laughing with Jan over movie lines from Blazing Saddles and dancing in the barn in Rago to the Eagles concert (more than a few times). Jan will forever remain one of my very favorite people I was blessed to know on this earth. Brian, my heart aches for you. Thank you for both treating me like part of your pack. I thank you both for being so good to Paul and Gage. I love you ALL and miss you dearly. I am truly very saddened by the loss of dear Jan. You all gave her so much love and a wonderful life. I never saw her without a smile. God Bless.
