Benjamin SUNDERMEIER Obituary

SUNDERMEIER Benjamin Joseph Sundermeier, 48, passed away in his sleep on Aug. 6, 2012. Ben founded Space Planning and Design and was a prominent interior and exterior space designer in Kansas City for almost twenty years. Ben brought beauty, attention to detail, and craftsmanship to every one of his projects. Ben's greatest love, above everything else, was his family. Ben was born in Omaha, NE, the fifth child of seven. He traveled this past weekend, as he did often, to his hometown to spend time with his parents, Grace and Michael, and his six brothers and sisters (Mark and his wife Julie of Blair, NE; Rebecca of Omaha, NE; Chris and his wife Karen of Burlingame, CA; Jon and his wife Mary of Greenwood, NE; Elisabeth of Omaha, NE; and Kate and her husband Javier of Omaha, NE) and their families. Ben adored his eighteen nieces and nephews (Bridgett, Michael, Dan, Meghan, Seamus, Alexandra, Zachary, Maeve, Aidan, Ellen, Molly, Lily, Jack, Javier, Ben, Celia, Olivia, and Joaquin), two great-nieces (Kylie and Keira) and two great-nephews (Caden and Logan). He reveled in taking them on travels as far away as Mt. Fuji or hosting them at his home. By the age of fifteen, he was managing the House of Genji Restaurant. He soon developed an interest in interior design and moved to Kansas City in the early 1990s to manage Expressions furniture store. In 1996, Ben founded Space Planning and Design; in 1998 he opened retail space in the Crossroads District. He shared space with Honeymom's Restaurant, then Christopher Elbow Chocolates, and finally Blue Gallery and renovated the historic Monroe Hotel building. In 2010, Ben relocated to Columbus Park, combining business and living in one integrated space. And, as Ben would say when a project finally satisfied him, he 'made it sing.' Incredibly generous with his time and talent, Ben always said 'yes' when asked to help with a fundraiser or special event. Ben traveled often and made friends easily. He will be remembered as gentle, kind, generous, joyful, wise, the sweetest soul, soft-spoken, passionate, intuitive, peaceful, and extremely talented and intelligent. A wake for Ben will be held on Friday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. at John A. Gentleman Mortuary, 1010 North 72nd Street, Omaha NE. A service honoring Ben will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. at St. Pius the Tenth Catholic Church, 6905 Blondo, Omaha, NE. A memorial service in Kansas City is planned for August 25, 2012. In keeping with Ben's spirit of unrestricted giving, the family suggests donations in Ben's memory to the charity of the donor's choice.

There isn´t a day that passes that I don´t experience Ben´s work as he was beloved by my wife Mary. He helped to open our eyes to so many interior design options that we never would have found on our own. Ben was also great to work with as we liked to mix new and old together. The family should be sustained by the amount of love so many people had for him because of how he enriched their lives.

We see Ben every day in our home, in almost every room. He made such a difference for so many people, from his personality to his artistic talent for interior decorating. Recent guests commented on several of his additions to our home. Ben opened our eyes to new and different ideas. He would get a kick out of the fact that his ideas were so lasting.

I knew Ben through my sister, Christy. Although I didn't know him well, I knew what a giving and gracious man he was for many years to Christy as she dealt with her husband Casey's battle with cancer. Ben always had a smile on his face and a joyful attitude that was very engaging.

Grace and Michael, I worked with Ben at his Westport and Crossroads studio. I have lots of memories of Ben living his life. He often ordered milk when were out to eat, said it was a carry over from childhood. I liked that. We all need to carry a bit of childhood into our adult life. I helped him with the flowers for Kate and Javier's wedding in Omaha,so I got to see him with his family. He liked his clan!!I learned a lot from Ben and was glad for our brief period of sharing life and work.

We consider ourselves one of the lucky one's to have worked with Ben. We began our relationship on a professional level and it quickly developed into a great friendship. When we look around our beautiful home, we feel Ben's presence. We got to experience and know his gentle nature and see his creative genius in action. He has left his mark on us and on our home and we feel a profound loss.

Dear Gig and Mike and all the family: We just are so very sorry for your loss of Ben. It's so very difficult to lose our loved ones, I know. When our son, Eddy, died someone sent this poem to us, and I have kept it all these years. I think it might help you a little too:

When you remember me, it means that you have carried something of who I am with you, that I have left some mark of who I am on who you are. It means that you can summon me back to your mind even though countless years and miles may stand between us. It means that if we meet again, you will know me, and hear my voice and speak to me in your heart. For as long as you remember me, I am never entirely lost.

I know many people were touched by Ben. I will be praying for you in the difficult days to come. We love you, and our hearts ache for you. Gail and Phil Bailey, Brett Jess and baby Phillip Edward

From Ben Jonson, when his son Ben, died:
It is not growing like a tree
In bulk doth make Man better be;
Or standing long an oak, three hundred year,
To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:
A lily of a day
Is fairer far in May,
Although it fall and die that night—
It was the plant and flower of light.
In small proportions we just beauties see;
And in short measures life may perfect be. Garcia Family
