GREGORY KELLING Obituary

Dr. Gregory Aloysius Kelling, 58, Kansas City, Mo., passed away on October 1, 2011, in KU Medical Center surrounded by friends, family and all the angels and saints. The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 53rd and Leavenworth, Kansas City, KS 66104. A visitation for friends and family will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the church. Greg was born on Sept. 22, 1953, in Kansas City, Mo., to Dorothy (Ross) Kelling and Dr. George W. Kelling. Greg attended Rockhurst and graduated from St. Mary's high school. He went on to get a history degree at Park University, where he also played basketball, received his Juris Doctorate from UMKC, attended the University of Kansas for post-graduate studies in journalism, urban planning and public administration and received his Doctorate of Chiropractic from Cleveland Chiropractic College. Greg married his wife, Kathleen Orel on Aug. 22, 1981, in Christ the King Catholic Church and was blessed with six children. The couple lived in Kansas City, Mo., for 10 years, until they moved to Kansas City, Kan., where they continued to raise their children. After merely piquing his insatiable thirst for knowledge graduating from Cleveland Chiropractic, following in his father's footsteps, Greg took over his father's chiropractic practice in Independence, Mo., after his death. This was simply one front where Greg changed lives. He loved his job and patients dearly and besides using his healing hands to adjust them, he also performed ART, acupuncture, sports medicine, and used an all around holistic medicinal approach to cure patient's ailments. Much of Greg's clientele came from the athletic spectrum; he was a personal trainer and coach to numerous athletes. One of Greg's greatest passions was coaching his children in baseball, basketball, and football. The number of lives that Greg touched in this arena is immeasurable. His infinitely optimistic attitude turned many, as he would say, "fafalonies" into real athletes. Aside from coaching, Greg also enjoyed athletic activities himself, especially running and basketball. Some of his favorite Sunday afternoons were spent going on long walks with his children and wife in Shawnee Mission Park and Wyandotte County Lake. God may have rested on the seventh day, but Greg Kelling never did. He was known for working long hours and seeing patients on Saturdays and Sundays. One of Greg's highest priorities was providing for his family and as testimony from his patients, he never was shy in showing his pride in them. Those blessed enough to live out Greg's memory are wife, Kathy, sons, Zachary, Michael, Matthew and Joseph, daughters, Gina and Ali. Also his mother, Dorothy Kelling, sister, Cheryl Nowlin and husband Dan, brothers, Dr. Douglas M. Kelling and wife Sherry, Dr. Brian R. Kelling, and Eric A. Kelling, and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, patients and athletes. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Kelling Children's Education Fund c/o Security Bank of Kansas City. Dr. Kelling's life journey and passing will leave a vacuum, an empty place, in the hearts and the minds of the people he came into contact with. He was a very unique individual and a gift to those who knew him. May God rest his soul with great peace and comfort. I will never forget his dedication and the valuable guidance that he so willingly provided me.

Kellings: I can't help but smile every time I think about Greg, Joe, Cathy, and every sibling. Quite simply, you have all brought nothing but joy to my life and I know countless others. When I arrived on the St. James scene Joe's junior year, I met a young man - let's just say not lacking in confidence. He was a blast to coach and be around from day one. Although soccer was not his #1 sport, Joe quickly proved that he was a competitor and always playing to find a way to win, in spite of being part of a squad that may not have been the most talented. I bring all this up because obviously the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! I slowly got to know Cathy and Joe's brothers and sisters as time has gone on, but I quickly realized I was getting a package deal when Joe was playing. Greg was at virtually every game as our team doctor. He and Matt gave their time selflessly, working up our boys coming off of the field injured and getting them back out there as quickly as possible. Greg's healing touch was indisputable. His willingness to advise on all things health and performance - wise was non stop. I told Greg time and time again he had a life time pass as our team doctor, and he continued to do so, as recently as our state boy's championship year, even after Joe's graduation. He had a passion for life and those things he knew so much about - and willingness to share them. He also was a passionate Thunder fan. On more than one occasion I had to shut him up or I would have gotten kicked out of the game! One of my favorite memories was in our first varsity season together, in the first round loss to eventual state champ KC Christian (who we almost beat), the referee stopped the game to give me a yellow card. I was baffled as to why I was getting this card - he then pointed to the end of the bench where he had been getting an earful. Guess who?!!! For someone I have not known that long, I fell fast for Greg Kelling and his family. He was a true friend of mine and to all that crossed his path on my watch. After our first historic final four berth (in which under's Joe leadership we knocked off the #1 and #2 teams in the state to get there), we lost the semis and 3rd place game. As we lined up for SJA's historic first boy's final four team picture, I stopped the cameraman and spent 5 minutes tracking down Greg. There was no way I was going to have that picture taken without him. As it turns out that may be the only picture I know of him with our team(s). It will forever be part of my memory book and he, as well as his wonderful family, will be forever part of my life and SJA. God bless you all. Love, Rick Enna

I was fortunate enough to be Greg Kelling's high school football coach. He was a major contributor to our success. I labeled Greg as a consummate thinker. Each week after giving the players the opponents' scouting report there was always one inquisitive face (GK) who had the look of "Coach, I think I may have a better way." We are all better because of Greg Kelling.

We have many memories of Uncle Greg. Everytime we look in our supplement cabinet of millions of Standard Process bottles we remember you. Greg's word was gold. Whatever he told Dan that would fix our ouchies, he was right. Catelyn, of course, the competitive gymnast, will miss coming into see her Uncle Greg each week to fix her injuries and wear and tear on her body from the ridiculous things she does. Greg was one of her biggest cheerleaders, was always on Catelyn's side and always told her how good she was going to be. There was such a special bond between the 2 of them because of their love for athletics. All the gymnasts wanted to come see "Catelyn's Uncle Greg" to heal their hurts. Patrick was "Bub" to Greg. They would crack each other up because they are 2 of the most unique creatures God created, never apologizing for who they are!! Catelyn reminded me of a time that Patrick, Greg, and Adam were playing RockBand and Greg was singing his lungs out(off key of course) but he didn't care! They were the coolest RockBand ever!! May we all be reminded of the way Greg lived! Getting the most out of everyday, putting others ahead of himself, and leaving a legacy for his family. What an amazing man that did so much in such a short time he had on this earth! Look forward to seeing you in heaven again! Love, Dan, Jodie, Catelyn & Patrick Orel

Greg Kelling Family,
My thoughts and prayers goes out to each and everyone of you. I, as countless others, were so blessed to have known Greg. He not only treated me for over 30 years, he treated all my Cross Country athletes as well, always working them in to his busy schedule when an injury occurred, particularly before a meet. Just walking into his office and seeing his great smile, and his acknowledgement of you, would make you feel better. We all have truly lost a great man who touched so many lives.
