RICHARD HAWK Obituary

Richard Cowen "Dick" Hawk, of Leawood, Kan., passed away March 4, 2017, at Menorah Hospital following a heart attack that evening. Richard, son of Ora Rachel (Cowen) Hawk and Willis Estal Hawk, was born in Topeka, Kan., on Aug. 31, 1934. Dick was a devoted husband, loving father, beloved brother, tireless entrepreneur, and avid jazz musician. Although he is widely known for the Gaslight Grill in Leawood, his business acumen spans across countless successful ventures. His early professional years in higher education included Director of the Division of Field Service at Emporia State University, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Chicago and the first Executive Director of the Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Board. Dick's entrepreneurial prowess extended into the financial industry, including a chain of banks in Minnesota, an insurance company, loan servicing and financial consulting, as well as aviation, publishing, broadcast and jazz history. More recently, Dick built the Country Club Hotel and Spa at Lake Ozark, Mo., including the restaurant where Lynn Zimmer and the Jazz Band originated. Most recently, Dick opened the Gaslight Grill in Leawood, known for the Jazz Band and his weekly jazz broadcasts on local radio. Dick earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Business Administration at Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia (now Emporia State University) and an honorary doctorate degree awarded by the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. The Richard C. Hawk Sports Center at Alliant International University, San Diego, is named in his honor. Dick was one of five outstanding graduates of Emporia State University and was presented a 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor granted by the university, at a reception honoring the recipients. In 2016, in honor of his wife, Sylvia, Dick established The Richard C. "Dick" and Sylvia Renner Hawk Scholarship, a renewable scholarship that provides assistance to Emporia State students who have financial need. In 1952 with a $100 scholarship, Dick enrolled at Emporia where he met Sylvia, and quickly laid the groundwork for his entrepreneurial career. As a student he became the editor-in- chief of the campus newspaper, he created a third campus independent political party and was elected President of Student Council, and was one of 25 students chosen to represent Emporia State in the 1955-56 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities." Dick was a member of such student organizations as Alpha Kappa Lambda, Xi Phi, Pi Omega Pi, Pi Kappa Delta, Phi Mu Alpha and Debate. Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia (Renner) Hawk, and his parents. He is survived by three children, Chad Hawk, and his wife Jennifer; Amy Hawk, and her husband Todd, and Katira Hawk (daughter and granddaughter); two grandsons, Bryon and Carson, Leawood; brother, Ray W. Hawk, Kansas City, Mo., and sister, Rachel (Hawk) Bolton, Overland Park. Visitation for Dick will be at 10 a.m. followed by funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, at the Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Foundation at 13720 Roe Ave., Leawood, KS 66224 or the American Cancer Society. Dick was one of the kindest and most welcoming human beings I have ever met. Everyone who dined at the Gaslight Grill was his friend, whether they just met him or had known him for years. My heart broke when I heard of his passing. He was an irreplaceable fixture of the Leawood community, and he leaves an emptiness in the world of Jazz that cannot be filled. I pray for peace and comfort for his family.

We went to the Gaslight Grill for many anniversaries and he would always greet us like a long lost relative. He knew who we were and would be as friendly as could be. He was quite a gentleman. What a loss to the city and to the restaurant world. He was so friendly and so kind. I loved listening to his voice on the radio and he was always reminding us to go visit the restaurant. Besides our anniversary, we often went there for family birthdays and other great special occasions. Pass gently into the night.

To his family
I never met Mr Hawk, but his many ads on radio made me a fan. His smooth and inviting voice made me want to have dinner at the Gas Light Grill, and hear the jazz music being performed. He was like a friend and he never met me . I will miss seeing him on the radio. It's nice to put a face to that wonderful voice.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. We really enjoyed going out and having dinner on our anniversaries. We were at the grill in August celebrating our 63 and he was so happy to see us again.
My husband passed away in December and I shall always remember our 63rd anniversary.

Dick gave us a personal tour of his country club hotel, a most memorable event.
Dick also always visited our table, as though we were VIP's, and he truly made our evenings complete

Dick, your friendly manner and wonderful voice will always be remembered by the many persons who enjoyed "happy hour" at the Gaslight Grill in Leawood.

You brought a lot of people together with your warm hospitality who enjoyed many hours of fun, friendship and togetherness.

Your room of jazz was so unique and so appreciated by the fans of Gaslight. We spent many evenings enjoying dinner in the back room, dancing to the talented, wonderful jazz band and pretending and believing we were in New York City, rather than Kansas!

You were a cut above. You were also very generous when it came to helping organizations with donations. Of course, everyone wanted to come to YOUR place!

It is not surprising that you were "so much more than a restaurant owner and jazz player" from reading your obituary.
You left your mark in many hearts and will be missed very much by my husband and myself and all my girlfriends who enjoyed a lot of fun evenings at Gaslight with you.

God bless you Dick Hawk. We will miss you a lot. You take with you, a wonderful voice and good heart.

The Traditional Jazz world lost a good friend with the passing of Dick Hawk, owner of The Gaslight Grill, last Saturday, March 4th. Nobody supported live music like Dick. He always took the time to shake hands with each and every one of the Gaslight patrons. Sadly, we will never get to hear Gaslight Boogie the way that only Dick could play it. He will certainly be missed by many.
