MADELYN LENORE KIRKPATRICK HURN Madelyn Lenore Kirkpatrick Hurn went peacefully to her Heavenly reward on January 11, 2016. She will be remembered for her commitment and her service to her church, as well as her devotion to her family. Madelyn was born a few minutes before midnight on Feb. 13, 1922, on her parents' farm just outside of Stafford, Kan. Her mom thought it was close enough to Valentine's Day so her whole life Madelyn thought she was a Valentine's Day baby. Madelyn had an older brother, Meredith, and sister, Melba, and a younger brother, Donald, who all preceded her in death. Madelyn spent her younger years on the farm in Stafford and then moved to Hutchinson, Kan., where she attended school through high school. She was homecoming queen and Student Body President. She attended Breese College in Hutchinson where she met her future husband, Raymond Hurn. She and Raymond married on Dec. 30, 1941, and resided in Bethany, Okla., where Raymond graduated. They spent weekends holding revival meetings in various churches through the Midwest where Madelyn would play her Vibraharp and Raymond played trombone for musical inspiration. Through their ministry, Madelyn was a staunch supporter of her husband and was quite the Prayer Warrior for multitudes of people both in their local church and in the community. She served with her husband where they pastored in Hays, Kan., Tulsa, Okla., Atlanta, Ga., Norman, Okla., and Medford, Ore. In 1959, Madelyn and Ray moved their family to Lubbock, Texas, where they served the West Texas District Church of the Nazarene. Madelyn worked closely with pastors' wives encouraging them in their ministries. After nine years in Texas, the Hurns moved to Kansas City where Ray served the Department of Home Missions. The summer of 1985, Ray was elected to the position of General Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene and Madelyn would accompany him all over the world representing the Church and ministering to people internationally. Upon their retirement, Madelyn and Ray moved to Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kan. Madelyn continued her "ministry" in visiting those who were ill or new to the community at Aberdeen. She always looked out for new residents to ease their transition in their move. She prayed with many residents before they died. Her love for her family, her walk with Christ and her compassion for others will be remembered by all whose lives she touched. She is survived by daughters, Connie Isbell and Jacque Oliver of Overland Park, Kan., grandchildren, Baraq Isbell (Suzie) of St. Louis, Amy Condrey (Jeff) of Lenexa, Kan., and Danielle Prince of Overland Park, Kan., two great grandchildren, Thomas Prince of Overland Park, and Lily Condrey of Lenexa. Also surviving her are many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families. A very special thank you to the Aberdeen Village staff who cared for Madelyn in so many ways during her last years. She reached out to them all with a smile and encouragement and considered many of them friends. Hospice House in Olathe, Kan., also provided special compassion and attention to her in her last days. There will be visitation 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, followed by a service that starts at 11 a.m. There will also be a reception following the graveside service.
