Andrew Rupf Obituary

Andy On Sunday, October 25, 2009, Andy Rupf departed this plane to battle evil in another dimension. Known to those who love him as Andy Mike, Uncle Yeti, and Brother Drew, Andy's "big-warm-fuzzy-secret heart" was filled by "the best wife ever," collections of cool friends, and loads of loving family. When not slaving away as a frustrated programmer, Andy enjoyed spending time farfelling for gadgets, raiding with The Motley Brew Guild on World of Warcraft, repacking the car daily during long road trips, sitting around the campfire with family and friends, shooting off fireworks, and watching zombie movies. During his short life of 40 years, seven months, and nine days, Andy single-handedly tried to photograph every flower in Wyoming and endeavored to camp in all the national parks in the contiguous United States. Andy also found time to read every book written by Terry Pratchett, and he placed first in numerous games at ShaunCon. Andy leaves behind his "sweetie" and "prettywife," Diana Alt; his adoring parents, Al and Lucy Rupf; his siblings Susan Rupf and Mike Jenkins, Jennifer and Andy Zimmerli; his nieces and nephew, Leah and Rachel Zimmerli, Kendra and Daniel Alt; many wonderful aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, as well as in- laws that he actually liked. We will all miss his big hugs, ready smiles, and quick wit. Visitation will be held at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home at 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri, at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 31. A memorial service will follow at Mt. Moriah at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please join the family in supporting Children's Mercy Hospital and Clinics, an organization dear to Andy's heart. Contributions may be made in Andy's memory to help children whose families cannot afford care. Please contact Mt. Moriah & Freeman at (816) 942-2004 or visit www.childrensmercy.org to make arrangements.

November 10,2009 I am still trying to wrap my mind around the thought that
Andy is actually gone. There is a hole in my heart. And I know my brother and sisterinlaw and Andy's siblings, etc. are suffering. We believe he is in a better place and I look forward to seeing him again. As for the rest of us, we must focus on getting together and getting to know each other. I love you all.

To all Rupfs,

Whether your name started off as such or no longer remains such:

The first time I remember meeting Andy & Mrs. Rupf (Lucy) at Hogan was at the Freshman Social ‘83. He was in the library where Mrs. Rupf was in charge of the board games. We played a game of Monopoly &, Andy was beating me soundly. I rolled a seven &, so I said,

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.
All God’s children go to Heaven.
When we get there, we will yell.
Andy Rupf can go to Hell.

To this day I’m not sure why Mrs. Rupf didn’t give me a detention. Anyway, after Andy further humiliated me in that same game, I rolled another seven so; I repeated my chant &, Andy said, “At my house, the first time, a joke is funny, the second time it’s not & the third time you spend the night outside.” To which Mrs. Rupf added, “Andy has spent many nights in the yard.” From that night until we were in college, we were thick as thieves at school & sometimes afterschool too.

One year later, Andy presented me with a hand made cardboard Certificate acknowledging that I had survived one year of friendship with him & was now his best friend. I still have that certificate in a box of accumulated mementos & other cherished items.

Your family was, & remains, special to me,

Mary O'Leary

The ordinary thing at this time is to offer condolences and sympathy. I would rather express my admiration for a good person who retained his sense of humor to the very end. Please know that, come next summer, I will be lighting fireworks and thinking of Andy.
