Nancy Van Fleet, 89, of Kansas City, MO, passed away peacefully early in the morning on January 1, 2011. She had been a Hospice patient in the John Knox Care Center in Lee's Summit, MO, after complications due to double pneumonia. Nancy was born on December 4, 1921, and lived in the Kansas City area most of her life. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, the love of her life, Don C. Van Fleet Jr. Nancy was a jazz vocalist and held legendary status for her unique talent in the local and regional areas. She was known for her swinging style, playful humor and incomparable interpretations of the "Great American Songbook." She was an endearing and inspirational presence not only on stage but in all aspects of her life. Nancy was a loving wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and very loyal friend to many people in all walks of life. Her unconditional love for her family, her memory and her undying spirit will live with us forever. Her music and her grace filled us with joy, now her grace and soulful heart have found heaven. She is survived by two sons, Don C. Van Fleet III and wife Linda, David Gil Van Fleet and Kelly Summers; three grandsons, Christopher Scott Van Fleet and wife Rhonda, John Van Fleet and wife Lori, Luke Van Fleet and wife Megan; two great granddaughters, Sydney Van Fleet and Dylan Van Fleet; three great grandsons, Ayden Van Fleet, Riley Van Fleet and Justin Krout. Nancy requested no funeral service but there will be memorial events in celebration of her life and music. Details and dates of these memorials will be announced later when the arrangements are made. The Van Fleet family would like to thank John Knox Village Hospice for taking such loving care of our Mom. So in lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in her memory to the John Knox Hospice Unit, 600 NW Pryor Road, Lee's Summit, MO 64081.

Back in the 60's, when i was a fledgling bassist, i recall with great fondness, how encouraging and supportive Nancy was; when i saw her singing in a local club, about two years ago, after not seeing her for some 45 or so years, she was just as bubbly and encouraging as ever! A sweet Soul and human being, let alone stylin vocalist, Nancy Fleetmeister, rests among the top people in the universe! Blessings and love to her family and all her friends in this time of sorrow....the former Richard Youngstein, aka: dr. noah young

Simply put, there could never be another Nan...at least not as unique, talented & loving as she. Nancy left her impression on me from day one. She's the spunkiest "old hag", as she jokingly called herself, that I've ever known. You'll live in my memories & in my heart forever! Love you, lady! I know you're jazzing up the Heavens.

I'm so sad our sweet little jazzbird is gone. The world definitely has a dimmer glow. I met Nancy when I was a very sad insecure little girl who was invisible in my own home, and it was Nancy that always made me feel special and actually loved and cared about. She had that special gift and gave it to everyone. She made everything more fun and beautiful. What a woman. What a wonderful wonderful woman. She always called me Jannie and I loved her from day one. Thank you Lord for letting me know her. Rest in peace, my dear. I'll see you on the flipside.

Dear Don, David and families: I was so sorry to hear about Nancy. She was a very special lady. I've done this once so hope you don't get it twice. I talked to her a coouple of years ago and it was one those things to put off till later, although she was on my mind as I came across her phone # in my address book as I did Christmas cards. We had lots of good times together while Bill and the band was together. She was certainly a grest singer but also a loving person. She and Bill not only worked together but shared bithdays. I'm sending a couple of pictures(if I can do it) no date but probably in late 60's. My deepest sympathy to all. Shirley Washam

Many people will say nice things about Nancy. What a good singer she was, what a wonderful friend to everyone she meant but to me she was simply "my mom" from the time I married her son Don until the day that she drew her last breath. No one can ever take her place in my heart. I missed her from the moment she died and my heart will never be the same. I love you mom!!!!

I first met Nancy 40 years ago. She was always upbeat, positive, encouraging and caring. The last time I saw Nancy and heard her sing was about 5 years ago. All my love to her family.

My grandmother led a long and wonderful life. I was so lucky to of had her for such a long. She was a very talented, humorous and loving woman and lived life like it is supposed to be lived. I will always remember all the great times we had together and how she always treated me so wonderfully. She will be missed by many but noone will miss her as much as I do. Thanks to all who have and will comment here. Blessings to all of you from The VanFleets and from me personally Christopher Scott VanFleet a.k.a. Scotty Poopy.

I WAS VERY SAD TO HEAR OF NANCY'S DEATH. SHE WAS A SUCH NICE PERSON AS WELL AS A VERY GOOD JAZZ SINGER. I WILL ALWAYS APPRECIATE THE CALLS SHE MADE TO ME AFTER MY HUSBAND DIED IN APRIL 2010.
A TALENTED FAMILY...HER SON, DON, A DRUMMER, PLAYED WITH MY HUSBAND PETE FROM TIME TO TIME.
