RON ZIMMERMAN Obituary

Ron Zimmerman, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, and owner of Sunset Tours Inc. passed away May 24, 2012, at KU Hospital surrounded by family. Ron was born Nov. 25, 1941, in Leon, Iowa, the son of Raymond and LaVerne Vinzant Zimmerman. He graduated in 1960 from Lineville, Iowa, High School and Northwest MO State University in 1965 where he received his master's degree in 1969. Ron's first job was in sales in Omaha with the Morton Salt Company, but after a few months, he left to go to Union Star, Mo., to be a high school teacher and coach where he coached 6-man football and basketball from 1965-1967. In 1967, Ron was offered a job as basketball coach and teacher at Grandview High School where he coached and taught Psychology until 1979 and had several conference champions. In 1980, Ron joined Yellow Freight's marketing department as a motor coach driver and traveled all over the US and Canada entertaining their customers. When Yellow discontinued the motor coaches, Ron began his own motor coach company, Sunset Tours Inc., in 1992 with one coach. Over the years, his fleet was increased to seven coaches and Ron was fulfilling his dream of owning his own business. It was important to Ron to provide exceptional customer service and to ensure his customers had a good traveling experience. He loved being a tour guide on his trips into New York City and to Branson where he would provide interesting tidbits about the area and the Branson entertainers, some of whom were his special friends. He enjoyed driving youth groups and sports teams and was especially close to the William Jewell College basketball coaches. In addition to his business, Ron loved coaching. "Coach," as he was known to many, enjoyed coaching his son Todd's little league and AAU basketball teams as Todd was growing up. He continued coaching AAU teams for many years taking the teams all over the country to participate in tournaments, Ron was especially proud that many of his players obtained scholarships to play at the collegiate level. Ron was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard Zimmerman. Ron is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sherry; daughter, Tara; son, Todd (Michelle); sisters, Linda (Larry) Cox, Mary (Jeff) Heller; beloved "Papa" to grandchildren, Brooke, Sophia, Joe, and Khloe Zimmerman; aunt, Irba Bacon, nephews, Kevin Zimmerman and Randy Zimmerman, Brett Heller; nieces, Lori (Pat) Quinlan, Kim (Dan) Rudisil, Kris Cox, Keri (Russ) DiVincenzo, Tracie Heller, brothers-in-law, Jim (Patsy) McDonald, Bob (Julia) McDonald, and Larry (Ann) McDonald; sisters-in-law, Thelma (Vernon) McAllister, Mary Lou (Bill) Coutts, JoAnn Hayden; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at First Baptist Church of Raytown, 10500 E 350 Hwy., Raytown, MO, 64138. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery. We´re coming up on 10 years since your passing...hard to believe. I was just talking about you, Coach, the other day, when I was asked if there was a particular teacher who had influenced you...Of course, it was you who I looked up to in high school. You were a great teacher, and a great mentor.

Condolences to the Zimmerman family. He was a teacher when I was in high school. I've mentioned him often over the years and certainly quoted him. He taught me how to achieve independence though his pyschology course but also how to safely drive a car. I'll never forget his cool nature as the very first time I sat behind the wheel of a car he said, "Head for Highway 71"! Thinking he was brave to ride at speeds with a first time driver, I commented as such. With all the confidence in me, he said, "You can do it" of which I think he followed with "You will do it". Commanding excellence was his gift. Thank you Coach, I have not forgotten those lessons learned. God bless...

Coach was wonderful and humorous when you really got to know him. Basketball practices were usually longer than expected but his coaching led us to a couple of champoinships while i was there. The funniest thing Coach ever said to me was, "You are the best practice shooter I have ever seen." I still tell that story to this day and laugh harder each time I tell it. Thanks Coach.

COACH - that is the only word that accurately describes what Ron Zimmerman was to me. I played ball for Coach Zimmerman from 1973 to 1976. When I arrived at Grandview High School I was a tall skinny scared kid who had no clue. Coach saw things in me that I never knew I had. He taught me how to jump rope (I told him that was for girls, and boy! that was a painful comment), how to jump over ball racks (I only missed a couple of times), run until I got sick and shoot 1000's of hook shots both left and right handed. What he really taught me was how to work hard, gain self confidence, self respect, discipline, a desire to win, trust, teamwork and how to succeed. But I believe these were not only lessons for me, but for all of my teammates and classmates who came in contact with Coach Zimmerman. Balance - this is what a true COACH teaches. "Credit where credit is due, criticism where criticism is due." He used these words often and executed them on a daily basis without prejudice; I received both sides and loved him for it. I will never forget get the time and effort he put into my success and the success of our teams; and I am very grateful. I carry his lessons forward with me to this day and always will. Thank you COACH ZIMMERMAN.

To the Zimmerman Family my deepest sympathies.

I was privileged to have Mr. Z as my psychology teacher at Grandview High School. I've written a story about him this morning on my blog - http://sherrirodell.blogspot.com/2012/05/salute-to-coach-z.html. He was a great mentor and a wonderful teacher, as well as an excellent story teller. I'll miss him.

I had the privilege of chaperoning 2, 4-H trips with Ron as our driver. He was such a kind caring man a man that demanded such respect. We talked about him being from Lineville since my hometown was Princeton and we knew many same persons. I was thinking about how I had spent such a short time with Ron but the impression he left with me because of the kind of person he was is overwhelming. You as his family are blessed to have had such a wonderful man in your life. My prayers are with you at this time.

Wonderful person and loved kids. Traveled with Ron in 2007 with a bus full of 4-H kids. He wanted the kids to have the best experience possible and Ron provided that for them. Good man and my sympathies go out to the family. He spoke of you all on that 2007 trip.

I have wonderful memories of Coach Zimmerman (Grandview High School 1970-1972). He was tough, but fair and I believe truly wanted nothing but the best for his basketball players. I'll never forget the three little words that he spoke at the start and end (and sometimes middle) of every practice: "On the line"--which meant we were about to run wind sprints until we could run no more, but all that hard worked paid off for us. I'm glad Coach Zimmerman was a part of my life.

Coach and I met at the beginning of my career when I student taught in the Fall of 1967 at Grandview High where Ron was teaching and coaching.

Our paths crossed over the years when my school played basketball against Grandview. We lost a hard-fought game to Grandview when Ron walked across the court to compliment one of our players for trying so hard. That player was one of my students, and Ron's actions meant a lot.

On the court Ron was a fierce competitor, and off the court a perfect gentleman.

I lost track of Coach after he left Grandview, but amazingly we were reunited at my age of 61. I loved talking to him about common experiences of the 60's and 70's. He talked a lot about his family and was especially proud of his kids.

Last fall I had a serious operation, and Ron called me every day. That meant so much to me.

I look foward to seeing Coach Ron Zimmerman again in a better place where I'm sure he's waiting for all of us.

Ron, my friend, descansa en paz.

Not just "coach" to me....a father when mine was absent. I was never worthy of the time and interest he showed in me...but he showed it anyway. Life well lived, Ron. Thanks for having such a lasting impact on so many of us.

We are so very sorry to hear about Coach's passing. What a great person he was. He was always full of stories about his tours when he would come into the Santa Fe and have a drink before going home. Truly a wonderful man!
