JERRY GOODPASTER Obituary

Jerry L. Goodpaster passed away at his home in Weston, Missouri Thursday, September 18, 2014. Born September 12, 1947 he was the entire focus of his parents' lives as he grew and entered school at West Platte R-II. Fueled by intense desire and grit, Jerry became an outstanding athlete in football and wrestling. Jerry was a quiet man and always left the spotlight to others. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, MO with a degree in physical education and English. He had a deep love of learning and loved to read. After college he married his best friend and adoring wife, Suzanne. He began coaching at his alma mater, West Platte High School. He was assistant high school football coach and head wrestling coach. He developed lasting friendships with many of his students who still call him coach. Jerry decided to try something new and left teaching in 1976 and began working for a friend building homes. Later, he and his wife established J & S Cabinets in Weston, Missouri. After more than 29 years Jerry sold his shop, but continued up until the present building houses, decks, installing doors or anything someone needed. Every customer always received a quality product at a reasonable price. He never wanted to charge too much and had a special soft spot for any senior citizen who needed some help. Suzanne dragged him all over the U.S. on yearly vacations. He learned to kayak, mountain bike, hike the mountains and support anything she wanted to do. He dearly loved to fish for trout and enjoy the out-of-doors. Jerry never asked for anything for himself and gave of himself to train many young men and offer advice. He was not at all materialistic and always was thrilled with others good fortune. Jealousy was not in his vocabulary. Suzanne and Jerry just celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary and Jerry's 67th birthday. Jerry is survived by his wife, Suzanne, of the home and dozens of cousins and friends. He gave the gifts of true love, honesty, devotion and loyalty every day, without fail. He will be truly missed. Visitation and Services will be held Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the Vaughn Funeral Home in Weston, Missouri. Visitation begins at 9:30 AM and funeral at 11:00. Contributions may be given to Graceland Cemetery, in Weston. Arrangements By: Vaughn Funeral Home-Weston, MO-Ph. 816-386- 2281. www.vaughnfuneralhomes.com

Coach Goodpaster was my English teacher in 7th grade 1975-76. He was a good teacher and was always kind and fair. I hope it was not our wild class that drove him out of teaching! He will be missed.
