VIRGINIA HASSENFLU Obituary

Virginia Lee Hassenflu, 94, of St. Augustine Beach, Florida died at Vitas Hospice of Jacksonville on November 7. 2016. Her vitality, love of education, love of life and love of others will be sorely missed. Virginia Lee Green was born in El Dorado, Kansas in 1922 but soon moved with her family to Kansas City, KS. She graduated from Wyandotte High School, received a bachelor's degree from Kansas State University and Master's degrees from KSU and the University of Wisconsin- Madison. In recreation leadership roles, she served her country when sent overseas to the Philippines and to Japan with the American Red Cross after World War II and served the City of Kansas City, Kansas and the State of Kansas. Virginia's long-lasting children's daily TV show was "Romper Room School," a syndicated pre-school program shown in Kansas City, Missouri. "Miss Virginia" was on air entertaining her little friends from 1954-1964. She served in the American Red Cross, DAR, the Junior League of KCMO and the Alumni Board of Directors for KSU. She married Arthur Hassenflu in 1958 and had two sons. The family members were active at The Carriage Club, Leawood Country Club, the old Rockhill Tennis Club and Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Virginia and Art moved full- time to St Augustine Beach in 1987. She served in multiple charitable and volunteer organizations in the Ancient City, including creating the local Genealogical Society. Virginia and her husband traveled to all continents as Sports Ambassadors in the People-to- People Tennis Program. Though her husband died in 1994, Virginia enjoyed tennis until she was 88 years old. She enjoyed swimming, bridge, The Red Hat Society and her genealogy. She was spotted swimming scores of laps only four weeks before her demise. Survivors include her two sons, Gary (Brittany) and Mark Hassenflu, her stepdaughter, Judy Coll, her brother, Elton Green (June) and her grandchildren, Brian, Shannon, Gavin, Brandon, Tate, Peyton, Emma and Chase and her nieces , Betty, Margaret and Susan. A celebration of her life will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Parish, St. Augustine at 3:00pm, November 12, 2016 followed by a casual reception at the St. Augustine Beach and Tennis Condos. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society.

Virginia and Art Hassenflu both made such wonderful contributions to St. Augustine, particularly through the Genealogical Society and the revitalized Daughters of the American Revolution. Rest in Peace, old friends. You will not be forgotten.

I was on the Romper Room program in the 50s and simply loved Miss Virginia. Years later we met again when she came to my school for an event. I have always remembered her kindness, gentle spirit and how she empowered me at a very young age. My deepest sympathy to all of her family and friends.

I was on Romper Room with Miss Virginia. Every time I drive past her home on Lee Blvd in Leawood, I think of her and the fun we had on that show. Watching Romper Room gave me such a good foundation for school. She became a close friend with our family. May God bless your family. I know that you will miss her greatly.
