Joseph BONDURANT Obituary

BONDURANT Joseph Alfred, 76, of Lexington, died Fri, April 1, following a brief illness. Mr. Bondurant was the founder of the Bondurant's Pharmacy, a long time Lexington landmark located at Village Drive and Versailles Road. Mr. Bondurant, born Jan 4, 1935, in Brandenburg, KY, was the son of the late James W. Bondurant and Zula Powell. Mr. Bondurant spent his childhood in Brandenburg where he played basketball and was a member of the band for Meade County High School. Following high school, Mr. Bondurant received a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky. After marrying, he and his first wife, Nancy Ann Cox Bondurant, moved to Boulder, CO, where he graduated from the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy. Upon returning to Kentucky in 1960, he founded Bondurant's Drugstore in Corbin, which, for many years, was the largest drugstore in the state of Kentucky. In the early 1970s Mr. and Mrs. Bondurant moved to Lexington where they built and operated Bondurant's Pharmacy. The well-known pharmacy is unique in its shape as a mortar and pestle and has been featured in books, magazines, and television programs for its architectural design. Mr. Bondurant retired from the daily operations of the business in 2002. Mr. Bondurant was an avid traveler with a great fondness for the American West. He was an accomplished musician who played piano and trombone with numerous bands and was featured on several occasions at the Maison Bourbon Jazz Club in New Orleans. Following the death of his first wife in 2005, Mr. Bondurant married Jo Ann Bruner Sturgeon of Buck Grove, KY. The two shared a love of music and piano and enjoyed traveling to see friends and family. Mr. Bondurant is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Bondurant; his son Richard E. Bondurant of Atlanta, GA; his daughters-in-law, Jennifer and Teresa, of Birmingham, AL; five grandchildren, Will, Ian, Ashlyn, Meri, and Olivia all of Birmingham; a brother, Judge James Bondurant (Kay) of Hodgenville; three sisters, Rev. Alice Bondurant Scott (Jack) of Elizabethtown, Mary Bondurant Jones (Bob, deceased) of Lawrence- burg, and Eleanor Bondurant Newman (T.R.) of Lexington; and many nieces and nephews. I don't have the words to express my sadness. I knew Mr. Bondurant from the Corbin years when I worked for him at his pharmacy; I admired him immensely and he taught me so much. I was a high school student working in the most popular business on Corbin's Main St.--a place where the movers and shakers met for coffee or lunch. By his example Mr. Bondurant taught me that each customer was special, even if they could not afford to pay for the medication he provided them--he would mark "N/C" ("no charge") on the envelope, and just ask the customer to pay when he/she could. Such integrity. What a wonderful man. Rest in peace, my friend.
