Clifford Linkes Obituary

LINKES Clifford Copeland, husband of Melissa Taylor Linkes, died December 20, 2013 in Lexington, KY. Born November 17, 1944, he was a resident of Science Hill and Lexington, KY. Mr. Linkes graduated from Somerset High School in 1963 where he was a member of the National Honor Society. In 1966 he completed his degree in civil engineering at the University of Kentucky. He began his professional career in 1967 with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Upon his retirement in 2003, he had served the Cabinet in a variety of positions, including Coordinator for the Paris Pike Highway Reconstruction Project, Deputy State Highway Engineer for Construction and Operations, and Deputy Secretary. In 2000, he was selected by the Federal Highway Administration to participate in the Engineering Technology Exchange Program in the Oblast of Perm, Russia. From 2006 to 2012, he chaired the National Academy of Sciences Research Project for the Transportation Research Board to develop Highway Design Guidelines for Historical Corridors. Mr. Linkes was a Fellow Member of the Institute Transportation Engineers, serving as its president in 1985. He was a member of the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials and was a 2003 recipient of the Presidential Special Award of Merit. He will be posthumously recognized by the UK College of Engineers with a Career Achievement Award in April, 2014. Mr. Linkes was a member of the Lexington Club, The Thoroughbred Club of America, Greenbrier Country Club, A UK Fellow and a Life Member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association. His commitment to service was evidenced in his contributions to Science Hill Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church, Lexington and the National Eagle Scout Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two nieces in Somerset, KY, Debra Gedby Rogers and Donna Godby Ray. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Likes; sister, Joan Linkes Godby; brother, Ronald Likes; and niece, Julie Godby Hamilton. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be sent to First United Methodist Church, Science Hill Methodist Church or Lexington Humane Society. Visitation will be at First United Methodist Church, High Street, Friday, December 27 from 12-2:30pm followed by a memorial service at 3pm.
