Sam Murphy Obituary

Sam Murphy, III

Bastian, VA

Sam McCarty Murphy, III, age 53, died suddenly Saturday, September 19, 2015 at his home in Bastian VA. Sam graduated from Bearden High School and Pellissippi State Community College. He started his career with Norfolk Southern Railway in Knoxville TN. From there to Decatur IL, Roanoke VA, Birmingham AL and lastly as District Claims Agent in Bluefield WVA where he was very happy. Sam loved the outdoors and nature. He was an avid hiker and climbed mountains all across the U.S., including Mt. Rainier and also Mexico. Sam lived at the foot of the Jefferson National Forest where he could hike every day with his beloved dog named IV. He loved music in all styles and had recently rekindled his passion for playing guitar. Sam spent many hours writing and recording with friends at Joel Stooksbury's Soundtrack Black Studio. He really enjoyed playing guitar with his brother, Mick, whom he had taught guitar many years ago. Sam was loved by many. We loved him dearly and will miss him forever.

The years are passing but I can assure you that I still think of Sam. He truly was one of the nicest persons that I have ever gotten to know and always was excited to talk whenever I would call him no matter how long or how far we were apart.
His name really does still come up in conversation at work and that brings up the disbelief still that he has gone home!
He was a great friend and still missed!

I would like to send my condolences to Peggy and Mick Murphy about Sam. Sam was great at anything he did, and his smile and presence could light up any event! I will never forget the 5 years I spent around the Murphy family. The love and support they gave each other showed me what a real family was supposed to be like. I will also remember and treasure every time Sam met Mick and I at Watts Bar, drove us out to Sand Island in that glorious K-raft to have fun in the sun,and tried to teach me how to wake board so patiently, he was this amazing person that I feel honored to have known. He never wanted you to give up on anything you tried!
If someone ask me who was Sam Murphy? I would say "He loved his family, lived life to the fullest and there was no boundary he could not conquer!" People say he will be missed, I agree with that statement however I say it a little differently "He lived and was to good for this world."

Peggy,
As you know, Sammy was one of my best childhood friends. We were raised alot like brother and sister. Even though we did not stay in touch as adults, most of my fondest memories were made on the lake and at Sand Island where we all learned to water ski together. His adventurous spirit was admirable. I am saddened to learn of his sudden passing. My prayers are with you and Mickey.

My sincerest sympathies to the family of a good friend who I know will be missed by many. I got to room with Sam when we hired in with Norfolk Southern, he talked me into starting karate at Jack Butterini's where we spent time together for years and kept up with each other after he had moved with the job. I am truly saddened at the loss of such a kind and good man.

My most precious nephew. You brought joy and happiness to our family and you will live forever in my heart. When you were a toddler you called me "Shane" and I loved it. I was there when you came into the world and am heart broken to have to be here at your leaving. Love always,

Ms. Peg,

Please know in the depth of your heart that I am praying for you. We don't always know, nor understand why God does what He does, we just try our best to trust Him along this journey we call "life". I love you and I ask that God will shower you with His love, His peace, and above all, to help you remember the good days.
