Linda Wright Obituary

WRIGHT, REVEREND LINDA BIRD - The people of Holston Conference suffered a great loss this day, April 5, 2012, with the death of Reverend Linda Bird Wright after her nearly five-year struggle with lung cancer. Well-known for her optimism and her immense enthusiasm for ministry, she quickly made friends and disciples for Christ within all the congregations she served: St. Keverne, Lowertown, Helston, Debigna, and St. John's Methodist Churches in Cornwall, England; Soddy Daisy, Wesley, Unicoi First, Englewood, Mars Hill, Grace, and First Centenary United Methodist Churches within the Holston Conference. Reverend Wright loved art and music, and incorporated both in her pastoral work. Several of her churches have maintained their hand-bell choir ministries, which she organized within her various pastorates. She was an inveterate reader and student of theology, relishing the challenge of preaching and serving parishioners, particularly those in rural settings. Linda was a graduate of Covenant College, and operated her own certified public accounting firm in Chattanooga prior to attending seminary. She received her Master of Divinity degree from Emory University's Candler School of Theology and was ordained in 1997. She was a longtime member of the conference's Board of Pensions and for many years she ably served as Secretary of the Annual Conference. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and partner in ministry, Walter Lee Wright, III; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lee Wright, Jr.; and her mother, Joyce Kelly Bird. She is survived by four cherished children who faithfully cared for her throughout her infirmity: Walter Lee Wright, III (Margaret) of Augusta, GA; Meredith Wright MaGuirk (David) of Thompson's Station; Stephanie Wright Stanfield (David) of Medfield, MA; and Emily Wright Crawford (Eric) of Kalamazoo, MI. Close to her heart were her exceptional grandchildren: Alexander Jefferson Wright; James and William Connor MaGuirk; Andrew and Claire Stanfield; Hannah and Seth Crawford. Also surviving are her father, John H. Bird of Americus, GA; sister, Ellen Bird of Calera, AL; brother, Michael Bird (Sue Ann) of Americus, GA; niece, Kelly Bird of Athens, GA; nephew, Chris Bird of Americus, GA; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Wright Harding (Frank), of Newport, ME; niece, Laura Harding Brewer (Richard) of Newtonville, MA; nephew, Frank "Turk" Harding, of Newport, ME; and niece, Elizabeth Harding Levesque (Arthur) of Waterville, ME. Linda traveled extensively throughout her lifetime, and over the last two years she came to love and esteem the people of South Sudan. It was there in 2010 that she established a large private dwelling for lay workers and mission teams who labor to improve the living conditions and strengthen the faith of the local South Sudanese. She named this missionary home "Captain's House," in memory of her late husband, as he was called "Captain" by his grandchildren. A Service of Worship and Celebration of Life for Reverend Wright will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at First Centenary UMC; Chattanooga, TN with James Swanson, Presiding Bishop of the Holston Conference; Mary Virginia Taylor, Presiding Bishop of the South Carolina Conference; and Dr. Dwight Kilbourne officiating. A celebratory reception will immediately follow the service in the Cloister of First Centenary UMC. Memorial gifts may be directed to the Holston Conference Foundation, Attn: South Sudan Orphanage Fund, P. O. Box 900, South Rankin Road, Alcoa, TN 37701-0900. Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home Crematory and Florist, North Chapel, 5401 Hwy 153, Hixson, TN, 37343. Please share your thoughts and Memories at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com

The Black and Linville family from UUMC would like to offer their condolences to the friends and family of Reverend Linda Wright. She personally baptized me and a few of my friends nearly 5 years ago. It was a beautiful experience getting to know her and having the pleasure of having her in my life. She was there when I had my first surgery 6 years ago, with only finding out the night before and showing up at 7AM just to pray over me. Linda was a beautiful soul and the world is a little lighter having had her in it. Her love for the Lord and willingness to serve, will always be a pleasant memory in all of our lives. We thank the Lord our God for Linda Wright and we will remember the fond memories of her we have been blessed with, as we all celebrate her life. -Bonnie K. Black.

May the Lord RIP our leader and sister in Christ Linda Wright. You have fought a good fight of Faith. The last time she spoke of her trip to South Sudan was very touching. I was moved with tears to hear how someone who was still fighting for her life could make a such a trip in the middle of nowhere in Africa. Thank you Lord for the life of sister Linda. "Blessed are the peacemaker, for they be called children of God" Matt.5:9 She was trully a peace maker.

I was privaledged to get to know Linda as we traveled together on one of the Sudan mission teams. She was a lady of strength, spirit, love for the Lord, compassion for others. We are truly diminished.

I shall never forget the spirit of absolute joy that oozed from Linda's very being. As such, being in Linda's presence was infectious! If ever one truly lived out the Apostle Paul's admontion to his churches, surely she, for she was the true 'aroma of Christ' wherever she journeyed. In that way, her 'scent' lingers still.
Althought there are many things about Linda's life that impressed me, the indelible impression she left upon my life is the genuine love and interest she possesed for my teenage daughter--a young woman whom, at that time, was struggling with an almost incapacitating eating disorder. Not only did Linda bouy my daughter, she empowered me with her spirit of interest and encouragment as a mother. As large as were Linda's life and work, she always had room to love and care for one more person. And each of us who have been blessed receipients of her large heart can attest to this truth.
Part of the reason that I am serving abroad today is Linda's influence and inspiration as a world traveler and in her pastoral service in England. And life John Wesley, the world was truly her parish! Her stories infected me and her offers to help me explore overseas service were again, evidences of her self-giving.
Linda's example as a woman, wife, mother and clergywoman will ever serve as a model for how to fully and unselfishly live one's life. Her love and service for and to her beloved Holston Conference remain as a flaming beacon to all laity and clergy of the Conference. She sits on the stage of Holston still! An empty chair yet filled!
If we would honor her memory best, we would do well to be that spread that same 'aroma' of Christ wherever we journey, and to treat each person we encounter as if they were the only person in the world for whom we had all the time in the world (as was Linda's uncanny ability!)
While her presence among us will be sorely missed, I join with her cherished family and friends in rejoicing in her anticipated Homecoming and in sweet rest from her blessed and faithful labor.
