LOGAN PATTERSON Obituary

PATTERSON, LOGAN REID - known to friends and family as Reid, died suddenly on January 15, 2014. He was born in Pineville, Kentucky, on July 2, 1932. His love of the mountains and outdoors led to Reid becoming an Eagle Scout and continued with a lifetime of fishing, camping, and hiking. In 1955 Reid saw a photo of a girl named Anna Lee Robinson, who Reid was determined to make his wife. Reid and Anna were married for more than 56 years and had four daughters: Virginia Bibliowicz (Mike), Isabelle Welch (Lee), Martha Singler (Ray), and Tillie Atkins. In addition to his wife, Anna, and daughters, he leaves his grandchildren, Leah, Nathan, Emmy, and Anna Leigh Bibliowicz, Laurence and Logan Welch, Ashley, Amanda, and Reid Althoff, Tyler Singler, Tucker, Talmadge, Spence, and Shealyn Atkins; and his mother, Mildred Patterson. He was preceded in death by his father, Logan; and his brother, Allen. Swimming was a huge part of Reid's life. He was "cooling off" at the University of Georgia pool when the coach saw his potential. Reid represented the University of Georgia from 1951 - 1954, placing in NCAA competition his first year. In addition to being an NCAA swimmer, Reid was an American record holder, a world record holder in two events, won 8 SEC titles, and held 6 SEC records. He was once known as "the fastest man in the world." Reid swam in the 1956 Olympics, becoming the first swimmer from the South to represent the United States. He has since been inducted into the Knoxville Hall of Fame, the Georgia Swimming Hall of Fame, the Georgia Hall of Fame, the Aquatic Hall of Fame, and the very prestigious Circle of Honor at the University of Georgia. Reid worked as a geologist for several years, then as a financial advisor for more than 30 years. Services will be held Sunday, January 19, at 3:00 p.m. at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church Chapel with the Rev. Clay Harrington officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. Memorials may be made to: UGA Foundation, Attn: Reid Patterson Memorial Scholarship, P.O. Box 1472, Athens, GA 30603. On-line condolences may be extended at www.rosemortuary.com , Arrangements by Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.

My deepest condolences to you all. I only had the pleasure of meeting my uncle once at a family reunion in the late 1980's. I thoroughly enjoyed those days and remember being by his side most of the time. He was a wonderful person and will be missed.

I did not know Reid Patterson personally, but have one outstanding memory of him. It was from the 1956 National Swimming Meet at Cuyahoga Falls where I saw Reid talking with Bob Kiphuth, the Yale swim coach. They were talking strategy for the 100 meter freestyle Finals--which Reid was in. Mr. Kiphuth had utter respect for Reid Patterson who had trained at Yale that summer. Reid did not win the 100 in that meet, but at the Olympic Games took fourth place in the world behind three outstanding Australians. He was the fastest American in the world that day, and from what I understand was an utterly humble and superb person. I am saddened by his passing, but in my opinion he is an immortal whose good living example will go on.
