David Douglas Obituary

David Douglas

Maryville, TN

David Glenn Douglas, 52, of Maryville, TN, born March 20, 1963, joined his son Aaron in the presence of the Lord Saturday, February 27, 2016. His wife and best friend, Karla Horton Douglas was at his side as she has been for over 28 years. David walked on as an offensive lineman at the University of Tennessee where he worked his way to a starting position and UT Letterman. Under the guidance of Johnny Majors and offensive line coach Phillip Fulmer, David was part of the 1985 "Sugar Vols" Team that won the SEC Conference Championship. His focus and determination earned him an 8th round draft pick to play for the Cincinnati Bengals where he eventually played in Super Bowl XXIII. He also played for the New England Patriots. After the NFL, David worked as a Sales Executive. David and Karla became the parents of two children, Aaron and Ashley. David loved watching Aaron grow into a young man as well as a talented and gifted football player.

David was an avid outdoorsman, adored Ashley, and loved spending time with her hunting and fishing. David was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Type 4 in July 2013. During 2 and a half years with his diagnosis, David continued to live life to the fullest. David was inducted into The Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. David was a Free Mason member of the New Providence Lodge #128 in Maryville. David loved sports, he loved his home state of Tennessee, and most of all he loved his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Karla; and daughter, Ashley Jane; parents, Pat and Max Douglas of Spring City, TN; brother, Steve Douglas (Denise) of Knoxville, TN; father-in-law, Conrad Horton of Kershaw, SC; sister-in-law, Karen Horton DuBard (Rocky) of Rock Hill, SC; in addition to his niece and nephews.

Everyone is invited to come and celebrate David's life on Thursday, March 3, 2016, 6:30 p.m., at Foothills Church, 1551 West Lamar Alexander Parkway, Maryville, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the foundation honoring his son, Aaron Douglas, The AD Foundation, P.O. Box 6774, Maryville, TN 37802-6774 or theadfoundation.org. No condolences can be put into words to illustrate the depth of my heart for the Douglas family. My admiration of then, runs to a depth I had not known before. There tenacity in difficult times and tragedy - is a complete testament to their faith, and overall outlook on life. "HOPE abounds" is their motto. I am moved by the infinite level of love and friendship that shrouds them. May you meet God in your quiet room, may you see His face and know he loves you, may you find peace knowing the journey in heaven has begun for David - as he comes face to face with Aaron again. You are forever in my heart - Camil McConnell, Courtney Calkins & family

I was blessed to have known David for several years.I watched Aaron grow and play football for CBFO before becoming the fine player he was. David worked tirelessly helping with a Sertoma sponsored golf tournament called "Fat Boys Against Hunger" which proceeds benefit Second Harvest. He was indeed a "gentle giant"and helped make the tournament successful.David was well-loved by so many. He always asked me how I was, never mentioning his own illness. He will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched.GOD Bless Karla and the family.

To the family of my beloved Bro. David and friend.

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
1Thessalonians 4:13-18

The family is in our prayers during this time.

Love. Anthony & Paula
