He was born November 5, 1928, in Grundy, VA, graduated from Grundy High School (1946), from Emory & Henry College (1950), and from Candler School of Theology (1953). He married Carol Ann Force in 1952, and he pastored 26 churches in 3 states over the next 41 years. He was a gifted preacher, a generous giver, and an empathetic friend. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 51 years; his parents, Amy Lee Stinson Powers and Thomas Benton Powers; and all three of his older sisters, Florence Walker and husband Jim, Lois Bowie and husband Roy, and Erma Runals and husband John. Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Powers, serving as a volunteer in Jerusalem, and Lucy Wetherington with husband Charles in Knoxville; son, John Powers of Kingsport, TN; four grandchildren, Alicia, Alexander, Libby, and Debi Wetherington; sister-in-law, Glenna Knapic and her son, Richard Knapic of Knoxville; and many nieces and nephews. His memorial service at Washington Pike United Methodist Church will be Saturday, February 15, at 4:00 with the family receiving friends beginning at 2:00. Pastors Pat Polis and Bob Hamilton will officiate the service. Instead of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Washington Pike United Methodist Church, 2241 Washington Pike, Knoxville, TN 37917. The family wishes to thank West Hills Health and Rehab for 6 years of compassionate and comprehensive care.

I met Bob when I was 13 and he was 23. He was our Youth Pastor and he talked as if he knew Jesus personally. As a result, I gave my life to Jesus 5 months after he left Ripley, TN. He was my hero and I never forgot the love he shared with my brother and me.
