Did it post? Just in case, resending. Boss! Yes, can call you that. BOTH you and Karen are among my TOP MENTORS. NOT letting go of WKU or the times and experiences. DEEPLY REGRET that you switched dimensions without my permission, kind of makes it difficult for direct communications. NO DOUBTS you are in a GREAT PLACE with a LOT of activity going on. I got a snapshot in Jan. 1987 with increased my partial recall of my presence there before here. Really VERY thankful for all the supports. Heart goes out to Karen, know she misses you. Not going to say bye, farewell, etc. WELL AWARE we keep going after we leave here, so .... will say later with a heavy heart

Boss! Yes, I can rightfully call you that - WOW and what a surprise. Deepest regrets you switched dimensions without my permission. Due to personal experiences I have NO DOUBTS you are in MUCH GREATER places with a LOT more going on. NOT letting go of my WKU experiences and yes, with some very deep regrets. Physics and the universe ROCKS (pun fully intended). HOPE to meet again and in the meantime - posting you with other mentors this life.

We will always appreciate the encouragement and support that Richard provided for the Weightless Wildcats and for BIG BLUE and other projects. Working with the students as they discover the amazing reward of aerospace R&D brings back memories of working on our first projects at Harris Corporation where we met. BIG BLUE was also great because of getting the students (and Bill!) involved with amateur radio. We'll always remember Richard with his radios on the chase in Colorado. Ginny learned so much there and enjoyed it all, as well. We'll certainly miss Richard's phone calls and emails with his latest ideas for our students.

Dear Karen and Andrew,
It is with extreme sadness that the Hawaii Space Grant Ohana learned of Richard's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Mars and I are deeply honored that your family was able to visit us in Hawaii last fall. As we say in Hawaii, Richard lived with the Spirit of Aloha and showed it with the love that he had for his family and the passion he had for Kentucky Space Grant and for astronomy.
Personally, I will miss Richard's friendship and wisdom. At the Space Grant meetings, Richard always wore a ready smile and was enthusiastic to talk about space issues. I served on numerous committees with Richard and he came up with solutions when there seemed to be no options.
The Hawaii Space Grant Ohana sends our fondest and deepest Aloha to Richard's family for allowing us to share in the life of such a wonderful man.

March 28, 2007

I was saddened to learn of Richard's passing. As a fellow Space Grant Director for Virginia, I have very much enjoyed working with Richard over the years. Richard was a very important part of our Space Grant family. I served with him on the Space Grant Advisory Boards and we worked together, along with his wife, Karen, on collaborative activities.

Richard was indeed a very special human being. His dedication to his students, to education in general and to providing outstanding hands-on experiences for students was great. He cared deeply for his family. Karen and his son always accompanied him to Space Grant meetings. Their devotion to each other as a family was obvious and it was a pleasure to watch their son mature through the years and to see his dedication to his parents during Richard's illness.

I will miss Richard's friendliness, his enthusiasm, his good sense of humor, his collegiality, and the good ideas and prespectives he always brought to our discussions. His devotion to the educational and research goals of NASA's Space Grant program was always evident. He leaves a real legacy to Kentucky, to the thousands of students he touched, and to all of us who knew him. he will be greatly missed.

Karen and Andy

We were saddened, dismayed, disheartened and even angry over the sudden loss of Richard, who meant so much to both of you. But, he also meant much to his SG and EPSCoR 'family' and particularly to me. (I regret that I cannot join you on Tuesday.) We 'came up' together in SG and Richard's ideas, plans and insights have been so very helpful over the years. He was a true friend and compatriot and will be sorely missed. I can only imagine that he is in a better place -- Soaring to visit the stars he loved so much. Onward into the Cosmos, Richard.

Dear Karen and Andy:

I was shocked by the sad news of Richard’s passing. Ever since we first met through Space Grant in the early 1990’s, he has always been such a vibrant and enthusiastic leader, both for the Kentucky Space Grant and for the national programs, both Space Grant and NASA EPSCoR. His friendly humor and reflective thought will be missed by all of us in the national Space Grant scene. He made a difference, to the benefit of all his colleagues and students.

I was always eager to learn of what new ideas he was pursuing in Kentucky, and I took much joy in sharing his infectious energy for everything from astrophotography to ham radio. He was a marvelous friend and advisor, someone whose counsel I valued and sought to help strengthen our own programs in Montana.

He was, and always shall be, my friend.

Karen and Andy -

Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of such a remarkable man. He was one of a kind, and he made a positive and lasting difference in my life as I'm sure he did in the lives of all of his students.

Thank you, Dr. Hackney. Perhaps now God will offer you some details about the intersection of quantum theory with general relativity that we were missing here on Earth...I'll be sure to look you up when my time comes and you can fill me in. Until then...you will be in my thoughts.

Dear Karen and Andrew,

I was so saddened to hear that Richard lost his valiant fight at last. I'll always remember the times he came by the office and we would talk astronomy. He generously shared the wonderful photos he took, and even sent me e-mails as a heads up when the space station could be seen - I would have missed it otherwise!

He was a warm person whose enthusiasm positively impacted all who knew him. He will definitely be missed.

Karen and Andrew,

I am deeply saddened by Richard's death. I have much appreciated Richard's leadership of KSGC and the KY NASA EPSCoR during the 9 years I've been involved with them. He was always there to answer questions, badger us to get the reports in, and whatever else we needed. Likiewise, it became clear to me over the years that he (and you, Karen) played a major role in the space grant program nationwide, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude for that. On a personal level, I know how painful it is to deal with cancer; my daughter-in-law succombed to leukemia after a four year battle. You have my deepest sympathy.

His efforts in the Space Grant and EPSCoR were infectious and a great gift to the universities and colleges of Kentucky. He helped those outside of Kentucky to realize the potential of the professors and students to contribute to the Space program. I will miss him greatly as this work goes forward.

Dear Karen and Andrew,
I share very much in your
grief, and offer my deepest sympathies.
The kindness and heart that Richard
put into his work -- and how he
treated others -- showed through as
he did what was his passion. Thanks
to both of you for your help and
support in educating students, and
I'll keep you in my thoughts and
prayers.

Richard,

Will miss you at the Edge of Space Sciences balloon flights in Colorado. You were always welcome in our ground station for your wit and knowledge.

Rest in Peace.

Dear Karen and Andrew, I’m so sad to hear of Richard’s passing. He was a wonderful man, gifted with great intelligence coupled with equally great patience and empathy: a rare and beautiful combination of traits to be found in one individual. Your family’s efforts have enabled so many curious individuals to pursue dreams and to establish meaningful and significant careers in science. I have benefited, my students have benefited, and the whole state of Kentucky has benefited immeasurably from your tireless efforts. Richard’s impact will persist long into the future. I am thankful to have known and him. I wish both of you peace.
