Dr. Philip Arthur Higginbottom obituary, 1947-2009

Philip Higginbottom Obituary

Phil Higginbottom was born March 29, 1947, in Easton, Maryland, to Art and Robbie Higginbottom. On the same day, fifty years later, his step-daughter was born, whom he affectionately called "Maggie-Waggie" and she referred to him as "Philly-Willy".
Graduating as valedictorian of his high school class, Phil received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Princeton University in 1969. After a year of teaching Biology at Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland, and being accepted in the Business Program at Stanford University, he chose to attend Columbia Medical School in New York. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and then his Infectious Disease Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
In 1973, at the urging of his mentor, the brilliant Dr. Stanley Freedman, he joined the Division of Infectious Diseases at Scripps Green Clinic and remained there until his death on Dec. 31, 2009. Dr. Freedman stated that "Dr. Phil Higginbottom was a respected and admired physician and colleague at Scripps Clinic." Dr. Higginbottom became Vice President of the Scripps Clinic Medical Group. He was also a valued and inspirational teacher for over 15 years at the Scripps Clinic/Green Hospital Residency Program and it remained one of his greatest daily joys until his last breath. Upon being presented the Faculty Teaching Award in 2008 at the annual dinner, the chief resident was honored to introduce Phil as "The resident's rock, our anchor, a mentor to every single one of us, and someone we can all call a good friend. When the going gets tough, he's our lifeline. When the going's good, he's our biggest fan. And when it seems that all the odds are stacked against you, he's by your side, every single step of the way." "Dr. Phil Higginbottom was clearly the most beloved and revered member of the residency teaching faculty who will leave an indelible and positive mark on the countless young physicians he influenced and trained," states Dr. Joel Diamant, head of the residency program.
Dr. Higginbottom was honored when his peers and colleagues recently voted him as being San Diego Magazine's Best Doctor of the Year in Infectious Diseases for 2009.
Phil's wife, Terry Holladay, says his greatest joy at Scripps was teaching the young doctors in the residency program, taking care of his life-long patients who became family to him, and seeing his beloved colleagues and fellow employees at Scripps Green Clinic.
Those who were fortunate enough to know Phil, always described him as one of the most humble, brilliant individuals as well as a very kind soul-an angel. These qualities were exemplified by his enormous amount of philanthropic work and contributions throughout the community, as well as in his adopted second home of Fiji.
Phil's favorite thing in life was to help people. He loved sailing with his great friends, Tony and Tom, cheering on the Chargers with his profound loves, Terry and Barbara, fascinating dinner chats with Bob and Dr. Black, beach parties with the Holladay gang and friends, and visiting his first family and his childhood home in Tunis Mills, Maryland. But nothing was greater to him then chatting on the phone or seeing his beautiful daughter, Heidi. During his semi-annual humanitarian trips to Fiji, he would spend hundreds of hours treating extremely poor people in the remote villages, and this is what he called a true vacation!
Phil and Terry Higginbottom are the founders of The Dina Humanitarian Foundation. Their mission is to better the lives of children and families in the remote, impoverished villages of Fiji. Dina in the Fijian language means trust and integrity and it is this human quality that is the cornerstone of their work and the value that drives them both. They provide medicine, primary health education/care, basic household items and education material, supplies and support for the natives. "Our purpose is to encourage health, facilitate childhood education, demonstrate trustworthiness, and provide items of real benefit to remote village life", say Terry. This project will only become stronger in the honor and spirit of this great man.
Phil is survived by his daughter, Heidi Higginbottom of Boulder, Colorado; his step-children, Tasha Holladay, Louis Holladay, Maggie-Waggie Foster; and his wife, Terry Holladay.
In addition, Dr. Higginbottom has three siblings, his brother, Dr. Mark Higginbottom and his wife Rhonda of Easton, Maryland; and his sisters, Claudia Parsons and her husband Rich of West Chester, Pa., and Pam Carey and her husband Hugh of Baltimore, Maryland.
The Service will be held on Friday, January 8, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church located at 120 Stevens Ave. in Solana Beach, California 92075. (858) 509-2580. Please feel free to wear your favorite Fijian attire or casual beach wear! In honor of Philly, we are calling the wake following the service "Bula Bula", which means "Love Life" in Fijian.
In lieu of flowers, he would appreciate your donation instead to The Dina Humanitarian Foundation (501C3), 308 Hillcrest Drive, Encinitas, California 92024. Vanika Vakalevu!

My deepest condolences to the family, I adore DR. Higginbuttom, i was 41 years old when I met him, I had a strange disease, I lived in Guam at the time. They diagnosted me over there tuberculosis, when I went to him, I said to him, DR. My skin test will be positive on tuberculosis, please don't think I have it, Oh not at all, he said, you ARE Peruvian, all Peruvians have positive reaction on tb test. Then I knew I was in good hands, he was young and very knowledgeable 1983 , as soon as he saw my condition he said, I know exactly what you have, but au have to put your case in a round of Doctors. 3 dys later he came and said, you have what I thought you had the first day I saw you! Since then he became my Dr. I called him all the time, up to 7 years ago. So sad to hear he is gone. I was looking for him to call him today! Sad, deeply sad. Thank you for curing me of that strange disease, nobody but you knew how to cure it. Goodbye, you will be so missed!

11 years ago he gave my husband hope he might feel good again and sure enough, he did. My husband was really sick. He has been the one and only doctor my husband ever considered a friend and looked forward to seeing. Even after moving from So. Ca. we would drive hundreds or fly thousands of miles to keep him as my husband's dr. After his death my husband found a new dr. She knew Dr. Phil as you call him, she, too, was an infectious disease specialist and we are now on the Gulf of Mexico.

You, Phil, were an amazing man. You touched the lives of so many strangers, but most importantly, your family. I pray every day that your girls grow up to be outstanding citizens like you (I'm sure they already are) and that your step-son matures to be at least half the man you were (quite the task). Lord knows the world needs more people like you in it. I miss you old friend.

Dear Hon, It has been 6 months and 6 days since your passing. The void you left behind is nothing shy of a black hole. I pray that when you were here, blessing us with your presence, that you knew how deeply we all loved you, how special you made us all feel, and I will never, ever be able to Thank You enough for the endless generosity and care that you extended to us ALL. We sprinkled your ashes on your favorite places in Nacula, all of our fruit trees, and in a few days we are returning you to Tunis Mills. I am absolutely lost without you, so please keep an eye on us from above. I hope we have made you proud in the ways we continue to honor you. I originally wrote this speech for mom and Phil’s wedding, but didn’t end up speaking the words because I thought it was too corny. People always say life is short and to let people know how you feel. I can safely say this was the hardest way to learn this lesson.
Phil was the humblest of heroes. I am proud to say that he was the truest father I have ever known. Regardless of time, Philly had a monumental impact on my life.
Phil was peaceful and passionate; brilliant, but soft spoken; caring, giving and loyal to his family in the states, and his family in Fiji.
I will always picture Philly barefoot with a grin teaching us the beauty of solar cooked chicken. Of his enthusiasm over his home grown over-sized beets, or of the way he was both proud and protective when he spoke of the villages of Fiji.
A few years ago, a friend and I coined the term “Higginbottom” as an adjective, meaning light-hearted and peaceful, but all the while with a purpose.
It takes a courageous and persevering man to be the heart of gold he was through and through.
Philly patched us all up with faith. As a true doctor to his core, he healed us.
Although I feel robbed of him, as I’m sure we all do, I would go through all the emotional crumbling to relive these years again. To watch his enthusiasm spread like wildfire and infect those around him.
They say that people like Phil come along once in a blue moon; it breaks my heart many times over that he died on a blue moon.
There is no question in my mind that Philly is in heaven. It’s an absolute. Phil was lent to us by God, and God got greedy and wanted him back early. You really can’t blame him.
In Fijian, “Bula” means “Love Life”.
So, Bula, Bula, Philly. Bula, Bula. I love you with all of my heart and will continue to love you, practice you lessons and always think to myself: “What would Philly do?”

I Love You, Phil...
When I was 15 years old I told Phil I thought he would make a wonderful addition to the family. He had an immediate kindness to him that all of you have seen, and you could tell he was just brilliant, and then he married my mom! I had the Honor, literally the Honor, of calling this man my father. He not only gave me a father but my family and I, the greatest role model we will ever have. Phil was filled with more kindness then should ever be allowed in a single human being.
Those of you that have been in our house, know there is a room with boxes piled high to the ceiling, filled with gifts and goods for the poor Fijians. To no ones surprise, Phil got up that night, walked into that room, laid down on the bed and died there. He died surrounded by his own generosity. A few nights ago my Mom with tears in her eyes asked me, "how is it possible to write down on paper how great of a man Phil was". That's why we are all here, because if you ever meet Phil, and God I hope you did, you know that it's not possible.
Phil you were the greatest man I have ever met. I love you. Your son, Louis

PHIL'S FAVORITE POEM
"The Road Not Taken”

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I'm saddened & grieved over the passing of Dr. Higgenbottom, although I only had the pleasure of meeting him once, he left a very kind & loving imprint on not only my heart but also my daughter who went along with me to my appointment,. He was the only Dr who had been able to help & give me answer's to my condition which had been going on for months and months. His kindness & dedication to his profession was truly GOD given and he will be missed, My sincere sympathy to all who loved him.

Dr. Higginbottom SAVED MY LIFE when I had Legionnaires disease-my son's life when he had extreme acne with infection-and myself again with a blood infection.His manner in dealing with family and patients with life threating diseases was kind,honest and reassuring.
The community and the health profession have lost a major figure in our lives.
I and my family send our condolences to his loved ones.

I believe I might not be here today, but for Dr. Higginbottom's care. So many lives he saved and made whole, as he did for me. After going from doc to doc who repeatedly couldn't cure me of my infection, he did! It was so reassuring knowing I was lucky to have the very best doctor caring for me and just a phone call away. His kind and thoughtful demeanor was comforting to me enabling me to confide in him as well. I'm sad that such a wonderful doctor and person has moved on and I'm still in disbelief. So many depended on him and found comfort in him. There are some shoes in life that will never be filled. A bright light in the world. I will sorely miss his caring for me as I look at the lab paper from him I have yet to do.

Dr Phil , you were a brilliant doctor and wonderful human being. I am so thankful to have had you for my doctor for over twenty years. No matter where I traveled, I always knew you'd get back to me if I needed you. Your passion for Fiji was contagious. Thanks to your help planning my Yasawa trip, I understand why you loved Fiji and the people so much. Words cannot express the loss I feel after hearing the sad news. The world has lost a shining star. Fred and I send our deepest sympathy to your family .

The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures
He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness,
For His names's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life;
AND I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi
(Art Higginbottom's favorite verse)

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

Phil was a man of extraordinary character and one of the finest human beings I ever knew. Roommates in college (actually we met as student leaders in high school), I regret that we had not kept in better touch over the years. It's clear from the guest book entries that Phil profoundly touched many lives and was widely loved and admired.

RIP, buddy.

Debra and I wish to express our heartfelt condolonces over the loss of your Husband, Father, and Grandfather. He was my doctor for over 2 years and I always felt as if I was his only patient when I went to see him. He will be sorely missed.

January 15, 2010

Years ago, I was miffed, trying to figure out what was going on with my bout of chronic mono. When I got to Philip, who was probably the 8th doctor I'd visited in hopes of insight and help, he became my permanent and only doctor of the last 20 years. Selfishly, I have to admit, knowing he was available, even though I rarely saw him, gave me a sense of relief, knowing if anything went wrong with my health-- I had the best doctor one could possibly have. But it goes beyond that. Philip is lodged in my mind as a gem of a human being-- smart, intuitive, sincere and caring. And I like to think what interaction I had with him made me a bit more that way as well. He is greatly missed yet lives on- on many levels.

My name is Jim Dunn. I was a patient for almost 6 years. I was Phil's age so we hit it off immediately. When my wife and I found out I had HIV/AIDS we were of course devastated. His clam demeanor was reassuring. Over the years he more often than not ushered in many interns and I went over my story with many of them. I am deeply saddened by his passing. His legacy will live on. My wife. Susan, and I will be eternally grateful to him and his family for sharing him with us. I moved out East to Va. He told me about Hogs Neck golf course close to his home. In his honor I will play 18 holes this summer and think of him. Thanks again for sharing him with us.

My condolences go out to Dr. Higginbottom's family , his office staff, and the fellow doctors and nurses he worked with at Scripps. When I was 17 years old, I contracted a rare infection, and with the suggestion of a family friend, I saw "the Doc" and after some testing, he admitted me into the hospital for a week, and three months later, I was cured. He became my Doctor after that first visit for the next 19 years until his passing. He was always there when I had a problem and very encouraging about life in general. I will miss him greatly and will always keep his smile and bright thoughts in my life forever. Here's to you "Doc." God Bless.

We first met and knew Phil when he was in residency and then fellowship training at UCSD Med Center in the '70s. He stood out as a committed, bright, caring physician who we both admired. His exemplary contributions to medical practice, physician training and community service as an outstanding Scripps Physician are utmost citations of his principle person. He will be missed by all of us in San Diego as we depended upon him for sensitive, caring and excellent work for our referrals to him. He made a deep and lasting impression on the lives of physicians, family and the community which will live on.

Dr. Higginbottom, thank you. For getting up early every morning to teach us residents, and for your seat at noon conference -- with curious questions, constant amusement, and quick applauds. For being our biggest fan, and after each presentation saying "that was really a great job."

Thank you for our trips to Fiji, and your reassuring guidance. Unlike us, the future residents will not be able to say, "I'm not sure, but let me go ask Dr. Higginbottom." Thank you for the times you were a friend and trusted confidant when we needed one -- it's what many of us remember the most.

We can still hear your "Ha!" as you used to laugh at us residents in morning report. Thank you Dr. H!!

We lose track of people who are part of our life story - our families were physically a few miles apart yet many miles figuratively, and yet my best childhood memories include summers playing in Tunis Mills at the Higginbottom's. Pam, Claudia, and especially Mark - I feel deeply for the pain you are feeling at losing your brother. And my heartfelt sympathy also to Phil's wife and children. It is inspiring to read of Phil's many accomplishments. I know he will be missed terribly by many.

I am saddened by the loss of one of Scripp's longtime physicians and shining star. He always had a kind word and really cared for my family and all of his colleagues and patients. He will be greatly missed. Much sympathy to your loved ones. Sincerely, Janet Snyder

My name is Andrea Jankovich and I am a caregiver for Mr. George Sottile, one of Dr. Higginbottom's patients. In 2004, George was referred to "Dr. Higgy" (what we called him) and he ordered a CT scan which consequently saved George's life. To say the least, we loved him and respected him immensely.
He was a great man, a fabulous doctor, and a wonderful human being. We loved his humor and hearing about his trips to Fiji.
Our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

"Awesome, gentle, genius physician. We miss you dearly."

Yes. Yes we do. Another huge void is left in the Scripps Clinic Family.

My deepest sympathy to his family. I hope that today, celebrating his life, will bring a little peace.

I have been a patient of Dr. Higgenbotom's for over 10 years and will miss him greatly. What a shock to learn that he has passed away, all too young. He always showed me great kindness, reassurance and concern for my problems. What a wonderful legacy he has left with his Dina Foundation.
He will be missed. God speed!

As mentioned by those who have written already,Phil was a really great guy in high school who did it all well. He set a high bar for those of us who would follow. ( Class of '67 for me)
I am saddened to learn of his untimely death but heartened to read of his lifetime of accomplishment, grace, and joy.

My sympathies to his family, especially for my long lost friend, his brother Mark.

Dr. Phil-
You brought our family love, balance, and wisdom. Words cannot express how we will continue to embrace your life, your person. Your memory lives on in each and every one of us that you have touched; which made our lives better by simply being a part of it.

We love you forever.

Dr. Higginbottom was not only brilliant, he was the kindest, most generous and caring person I have ever known, and I carry his influence on me daily. I remember that during the often brutal days of residency life, his office was always a welcome refuge... which many of us utilized frequently! My deepest sympathies go out to his family: they have lost a wonderful, loving husband and father. And while Scripps Clinic has lost one of its brightest stars, we have all lost a dear, dear friend. I will never forget you.

Our residency, hospital and community have lost a luminary. He exemplified a now often rare trait in medicine: true kindness. We were lucky to call him a friend, a counselor and a confidant. From his brilliant diagnoses in morning report, to sipping wine at sunsets, his presence will be missed in more ways than can be counted or reviewed. Awesome, gentle, genius physician. We miss you dearly.

What a loss! I was extremely upset about Phil's death. He was one of the most caring, intelligent and fun-loving people I have ever known. My fondest memory of Phil was white water rafting in southern Washington state during a Scripps conference trip. He was having so much fun splashing everyone and getting splashed back of course. We were all soaked!

Dr. Higginbottom is deeply missed in Microbiology in the laboratory here at Scripps Green. The techs and supervisors repected him professionally, and many have made personal comments as well. They are devastated by his passing. I didn't know Phil as well as the techs, but he was obviously a very nice, hard-working physician. Pam Boswell

My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire family and friends. Phil and I have been friends since we met at Blades and Co. in 1961. He traveled the path of mine through college, Air Force, weddings and business. We have remained friends all these years. I have been privileged to call him my friend. I will miss our phone calls and my sometime visits to SD. His life is truly an inspiring journey! Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Lynn Marvel, Tucson, AZ

Phil was an exceptional individual. He and I went to primary, elementary school and graduated from Easton High School, Easton, Maryland in 1965. He was our class valedictorian.

Phil was very active in school sports, student government, glee club and the band (of which his sister Pam, his brother Mark, his sister Claudia, I believe, and I were members).

He always seemed to excel at anything he encountered. His parents, being quality educators, certainly had great influence on his formative years.

Living in California, he was only able to attend, I believe, a couple of our high school class reunions. We will be celebrating our 45th reunion this year. Our class presents an annual book scholarship award to a deserving graduate of Easton High School in memory of our deceased class members.
Phil will be missed and fondly remembered at this year's scholarship award night and our class reunion.

Interestingly, about a week ago, my wife Lynn (also a 1965 graduate) and I were showing our high school year book to my son-in-law and I remember talking about Phil in our conversation.

Lynn and I were blessed to have known him.

Our sincere condolences to his family and all those who were touched by his kind spirit and benefited from his
expert medical care.

Dr Higginbottom was one of those people that you meet once and never forgot. He had a kind smile and a twinkle in his eye. The more you got to know him, you realized his heart was bigger than the room. He continually supported each of us residents individually and as a group. He was able to see the best qualities in every single one of us and within moments you felt safe and cared for. His wholehearted approach to us residents was not lost on the patients he took care of. Many times when caring for the same person, these patients would boast to me about how wonderful and intelligent he was. His knowledge of medicine and pathophysiology was unsurpased. Every day we would hear his pearls that I hope I remember until the day I die. I will miss him in Fiji next week, but more importantly I will miss him as my mentor in medicine, life and humanity. My heart goes out to you Terry and the rest of his family.

Dr Higginbottom was my mentor and my friend. He was a true advocate for the residents and patients. When I heard of his passing I was reminded of the classic movie " It's a wonderful life", as Dr Higginbottom was the "George Bailey" of his life. It was always a pleasure to sit and talk with Doctor Phil in his office. Even when I would stop, not in a patient status at his office, he always had time for me. Why was this important? Because I was just a regular guy and Doctor Phil always had time for all of us. The good memories of Dr. Phil, when I think of him, will always be my crutch.

Dr. Higginbottom was by far the finest doctor and one of the finest human beings I have ever met. When I was assigned to work with him in his department, I felt it an honor. He always had a moment to laugh, and to listen, no matter to whom. I would look at his patient's faces when he would walk into the room and they always showed such confidence and comfort knowing he was taking care of them. He was an honest man, and a good friend. I am so saddened for all of us who have lost such a wonderful person. My heart and sympathy goes out to his family. Dr. Higgenbottom..."Fly with the Angels"...rest in peace.

I have known Phil for 30 years. My mother was his first patient when he came to Scripps Clinic so many years ago. My mother adored him and he helped her make an unbearable time bearable. He was my friend and later my doctor. When Phil said everything was fine I knew that everything really was fine. Phil was a man of integrity, campassion, humor, thoughtfulness,great brillance and even greater humility. He helped me during many challenging times and I am grateful to have had his friendship. My heart goes out to his family and all who loved him. His was a life well lived.

My mother, who passed away at age 81 in 2008, was a patient of Dr. Higginbottom's. As she was severely disabled, I took her to all of her doctor's appointments. She could be ornery and angry because of some of her ailments and how dismissive some people were of her. She was, however, the president of Dr. Higginbottom's fan club. She adored him because he talked to HER, not me; he respected what she had done with her disabilities; he treated her so kindly. My mother always wore a starfish pin which Dr. Higginbottom never failed to comment on, relating his love of the ocean and Figi. I am so sad to see that this wonderful man who treated the elderly with such profound respect is gone. It makes me sad that he is not there for all the patients like my mother who need someone who truly cares about them. What a gift to the medical community and to his patients.

January 6, 2010

Dear Dr Phil(Philly) you were the wind beneath our wings trully. Especially your soul-mate Terry and all your beautiful children, Heidi, Tasha, Lois and Maggie. What a glow you always had with a matching infectious smile....and a true gleem in your eye.
