William George Obituary

William (Bill) Ross George

LANCASTER: William (Bill) Ross George, 90, Lancaster, Ohio died Thursday morning, June 26, 2014 at Heartland of Fairfield care center.

He was born on December 19, 1923, in Lancaster, Ohio and graduated from Lancaster High School in 1942. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in music from Northwestern University, Illinois. Bill was a man of many adventures throughout his life from driving a bus in Chicago to radio broadcasting and advertising sales at WLW Cinncinati. Bill would fulfill his legacy, alongside his brother Dick George with the development of Valley View Golf and Swim Club, established in 1956. Bill directed the choir at Grace United Church of Christ for nearly 30 years. He sang as a soloist at many weddings. William R George (aka Bill and Curley in younger days) was a member of the board on the USGA and travelled to every USGA tournament as a volunteer when he was able and as a bystander until the age of 80. He was an original member and President for the Ohio Golf Course Owners Association. His passion for giving back was reflected in his work with Maywood Mission of Lancaster, Ohio, amongst many other charities. An avid supporter of The Ohio University Music Program, Northwestern Music Scholarship program, and Lancaster High School Music. This trend surely began when he was building the golf course and invited Gary Campbell as a young high school student to live with the family. He and Maribell supported exchange students during their lifetime. The first being Cristy Serrano from Columbia, whose family is like our familly. He touched thousands of lives with a giving heart and a generous pocket.

He was a proud member of the Kiwanis Club organization for many years having been president of that organization in 1969.

William (Bill) is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maribell (Trout) George; two sons, Cory (Barbi) George and Ty (Patty) George of Lancaster; and daughter, Kary (George) VanMeter of Logan; grandchildren, Bleu George of Lancaster, Cory Bell of Newark, Kali Sheumaker of Lancaster, Ohio and many great grandchildren; a brother, Curtis (Marilyn) George; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents, Carl and Fannie (Harman) George; brother, Dick George; sisters, Evelyn Ramey and Della Johnson.

Viewing will be held Tuesday July 1, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home at 436 N Broad St. Lancaster OH. 43130. Funeral Service will be held July 2 at 10:30am at Grace United Church of Christ, 1185 Pleasantville Rd, Lancaster, OH 43130. Burial will follow at the Pleasanthill United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Maywood Mission at 1029 S. Broad Street.

Bill's course was a big part of my life and there are no better memories in golf for me than the many times and varying circumstances and friends that led me to Valley View. Valley View will be great, but never the same without him. Thank you Bill for so deeply enriching the lives of all central Ohio golfers..

Ty & Cory and George Family, I always like your Dad's laugh and what a spiritual inspiration to others. He always had great respect for me and I would label him my best Uncle. He sang at my wedding July 15, 1962. What a great voice and he is now singing and probably leading the Heavenly Host Choir. I bet his voice there is like no other. I always loved my Uncle Bill for he was the best! "I will miss you Uncle and Valley View Golf Course will never be the same for I ran a bulldozer for you when you built the greens. God spared you when the walls of the club house fell in on you for He was not done yet with my Uncle! Blessings to all the George family!
Love,

Lyndon "Pug" Johnson, Cincinnati, Ohio (Phil. 1:6)

Learned of this just moments ago from a mutual friend. Unfortunately, I'm leaving momentarily for U.GA to do some work next week and will be unable to attend any of the services. I'm thankful for getting to know Bill as well as I did through our mutual love of music, and wish it could have been more, and I'd have been more aware of his circumstances. My respect and admiration were always there, and I'm sure he knew this.
God's blessings be with you, and you're in my prayers.
