Mae Laborde Obituary

Laborde, Mae May 13, 1909 - January 9, 2012 Passed away in her sleep in Santa Monica the city that she loved and called home for over 80 years. Preceded in death by her husband Nicholas, daughter Shirley Miller, brother and sister-in-law Henry & Rose Shamlin and brother George Shamlin. Survived by her son-in-law and daughter-in-law George & Irene Miller; grandchildren Karen, Kraig (Tricia) and Kurt (Jewele) Miller and great grandchildren Matt & Katrina Ehrlich, Zoe & Sophie Miller & Edge, Spencer, Nick and Hudson Miller; Niece Dianne (Carl) Kassabian, Nephew George (Connie) Shamlin and their families. She is also survived by the many incredible and loving friends in her neighborhood and throughout the city. Mae was born in Fresno to Paul & Fereday Shamlian. After graduating from business college in her early 20's she came to Los Angeles. While riding the Red Car, she met her future husband Nick who worked as a conductor. Mae was active in the PTA and as a Girl Scout leader, and worked at Henshey's Department store. Later, she decided that she wanted to work for Lawrence Welk, and finally got a job offer after showing up with home baked goods every week for months. After retiring, and the death of her husband and daughter, Mae went to work for First Federal when she was in her 70's. Mae was featured in many Steve Lopez columns, and became an actress in her 90's appearing often on Talkshow with Spike Feresten. We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Sunrise Santa Monica for their kindness and care in the past few years. Mae's curiosity, fun spirit and willingness to try new things endeared her to everybody. We will be celebrating her life at a service on Saturday, January 14 at 1:00 pm at Gates, Kingsley & Gates, 1925 Arizona Ave in Santa Monica. For those that wish to attend, visitation will be Friday from 4:00-8:00PM.

Mae brightened many lives of people she never met - including millions of television fans like us who saw her in episodes of It's always sunny in Philadelphia. What an inspiration!

One of the chief reasons I looked so forward to Easter with the family in Fresno was spending time visiting with Mae.
I was in awe of her never ending, never ceasing joy filled attitude about life. She has truly been an inspiration to me and countless others. I have shared with many of my friends about Mae and her passion and zest for life. Pam Smiley

Aunt Mae Thank you for being a great Aunt for the last 45 years. You gave so many great years to so many other people as well. You were always the Aunt that I would brag to al my friends when we would see you on TV and in magazines. There was a reason that the lord kept you on earth for as long as he did. Now I know you are with him, and heaven is a better place!

Although it's been a few years since I last saw Mae, I think of her every time I have a passing gripe about growing older. Her energy and endless curiosity about everything has inspired me. My condolences to Mae's loving family. I wish I could attend the memorial, and we send all our best wishes.

Oh this is such sad news. I met Mae back in the late 80s when she hired me to sell her lot adjacent to her home. I knew then that she was a special lady. I talked about her so much at home that my husband insisted on meeting her. Through the years, I continued to run into Mae at the grocery store and always had nice chats with her. May she rest in peace.

Love visiting with you Aunt Mae!
