Pierre Jalbert Obituary

January 9, 1925 - January 22, 2014 Pierre Jalbert, Captain of the 1948 Canadian Olympic Ski Team, actor, film editor and ADR specialist, passed away at age 89 in Los Angeles on January 22nd, following complications from a recent heart attack. A native of Quebec City, he moved to Los Angeles in 1952, and became a film and dialogue editor at Universal and MGM. Credits include Blackboard Jungle, Bad Day at Black Rock, Ben Hur, Mutiny on the Bounty, An American in Paris, Tea and Sympathy, Something of Value. In 1961, the agent of Pierre's wife Joy recommended he audition for the role of a French-speaking WWII GI in the TV drama, "Combat!" Pierre played the role of "Caje" from 1962-1967. He was also featured in The Richard Petty Story, Ski Bum, Ski Lift to Death and Airport '79. Pierre then returned to the cutting room and ADR booth at Paramount, and worked on Concorde, Bloodline, Grease, The Godfather (including the famous baptism intercut sequence at the end of the movie), and the miniseries Shogun - where he was nominated for an Emmy for sound editing. Pierre excelled in home remodeling, masonry, and artistic crafts, and enjoyed French history, Eastern philosophy, fine wine and good conversation. Pierre is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, former actress and ballerina Joy Lee. Memorial service details are pending.

Yesterday

I watched Combat as a teen and loved it. Then about a year ago I discovered it on You Tube and was thrilled. Almost every night I watched one or two episodes from 10 until midnight, or almost midnight as there are no commercials to take up show time. One of my favorites was on a couple of nights ago, The Little Jewel. Need I say I watch the shows staring with Season 1 all the way through Season 5 in color then start over again. Caje was a special guy in the show. And he had a kind face (and handsome. I just wish there were many more episodes. RIP "Caje". You were a great actor.

I loved watching Pierre on Combat as Caje he was so handsome and a fine actor. What first caught my attention to him is his name, I have a cousin with the exact name who lives in Quebec. Rest in Peace Pierre Jalbert.

I just re-discovered my favorite WWII TV show, Combat, on Youtube, after what, some 55-60 years. It was the character of Caj that inspired me to start learning the French language--a great gift. Merci bien, Monsieur Jalbert, pour avoir suscité en moi le désir d'apprendre des langues, en particulier la vôtre.

I watched Combat as teen in the 60s and am now watching reruns, sometimes 4 in a row. Pierre did a wonderful job playing Cage. In one episode I watched last night, he was skiing and I thought he was probably doing it himself, or at least most of it as I had learned of his skiing abilities. I certainly enjoyed his acting.

Appreciate everything you and your brother did for our freedom. Most Americans would be happier to know that our brother single handedly saved Parliament from certain death. It's truly in you guys, to be heroes. From you Iearned French from a war bride and then got my residence at Beaulieu Sur Mer. You're in heaven with Francesco Marto.

Although, I didn’t know Pierre in his off screen personal life, I know him very well on his on screen life as “Cage” from the TV series Combat. Pierre’s integrity, moral and ethical personality appealed to myself and numerous other viewers. He epitomized a true American soldier doing the right thing and at the same time cheat death and come home from the war. I still watch Combat episodes on YouTube and see Pierre (Cage) always be there for the other guys of the platoon. We will always miss guys like Pierre and his excellent job being part of Combat. I am a Sag Aftra actor and Pierre Jalbert and his cast mates are still inspirational to my work. My mother survived the war in Belgium as a child. Not far from Bastogne. When Mr. Jalbert as Cage would translate in French especially while talking to a child actor in the show It just goes to my heart. Such understanding and compassion. I'm writing from a TV set, in NY Thanks for the continued inspiration. God bless your memory .

Mr. Jalbert was a great actor, especially in his roll as Cage in Combat. 5 of my 9 brothers would actually act out the characters of Combat, and my brother Ronnie (Walker) was Cage. I loved that show, and I still watch it to this day on ION TELEVISION. Live on COMBAT!!!

Still remember this very humble, perspicacious and fascinating man. He knew about the history of France, Napolean, Canada, and other countries, how to ski, told little anecdotes about his life, could build almost anything, witty and kind. I as a young boy, watched COMBAT every day after school...Caje, Kirby, Little John, Sarge all taught me valuable lessons in the series. I suppose I like Caje' the best. A man's man, great values and came across as a really decent man, also proven true with the 50+ years of marriage. I sure miss that series, I miss seeing those great actors/performers and television today is nothing like it was then. I miss it. Rest easy Pierre, Caje' and your many other names.....thank you and thank you very much!

To All of You on this Page, I was extremely fortunate (and in awe) to have met and talked with Pierre many times. He was a humble man, and knew and did so much, and I learned from him. I loved Pierre Jalbert as Caje. The kind of quiet man who you always wanted to be next to in any situation of peril. He gave Combat the portrayal of what a quiet strong loyal warrior looks like. He was cool.

I only learned today of Pierre's passing. I am so sorry for your loss Mme. Jalbert. Pierre's portrayl of "Cage" was spot on - he brought a depth and emotional range to the COMBAT series beyond compare. He was athletic, extremely masculine (and a little girl's hero and first crush). My father passed away in 1968 in his early 40's when I was only 9 years old. Our time spent together watching "Caje" in COMBAT are some of the most precious memories of my life. What a wonderful human being Pierre was...so accomplished in everything he did. I can only hope your sorrow is soothed in knowing how inspiring and loved your dear husband was to multiple generations of his fans. He is in the arms of the angels now and you will see him again. One day after this life has ceased, I too hope I may have the pleasure of meeting him too. Thank you Pierre for all the wonderful memories you've given me and to all your fans, friends and most of all your family. God bless you mon ami!
