Dennis Rose Obituary

Rose, Dennis Steven
January 24, 1944 - November 27, 2010
Dennis Steven Rose of Encino, dearly beloved husband and father, died November 27, 2010 at age 66, surrounded by family after a long struggle with cancer. Born in Los Angeles, California, on January 24, 1944, to Don Sr. and Hortense (Miller) Rose, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Bettina Kurowski, his children Andrew Rose, of Honolulu, Hawaii, daughter Karen Jacob, of Maplewood, New Jersey, step-children Lisa Chirico of Lone Tree, Colorado, and Thad Kurowski of Denver, Colorado, brother Don Rose, Jr., of Studio City, California, and half-sister Donna Houchen of Calabasas, California. In addition, he is survived by grandchildren Jakob, Tye, and Brayden Chirico and Adam Jacob.
Dennis Rose grew up in several US cities, but lived most of his life in Los Angeles, graduating from Beverly Hills High School in 1962. Soon thereafter he started his career as an entrepreneur before marrying Dale Kellogg in 1965. By 1970, Dennis had established Justin, Lord & Co., Inc., a real estate investment business he would run for nearly 20 years. In the late 1970s, with his increasing success, Dennis would join the Board of the Bank of Beverly Hills and begin a lifelong dedication to philanthropy as a volunteer, fundraiser, and leader within both the secular and Jewish communities. He was on the Young Leadership Cabinet of United Jewish Appeal, as well as Chair of the Real Estate Division of the Jewish Federation, while serving on both the Board of the Los Angeles Federation and the Valley Alliance, where he was Major Gifts Chair. He served on the board of Oakwood School for many years eventually becoming Chair. He was also one of the early founders of Teenline, a suicide prevention program at Cedars. Dennis never turned away anyone who needed his help, always sharing whatever he had with others.
Services will be held at 10am Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Eternal Light Chapel at Eden Memorial Park, Mission Hills, CA. Family will be sitting shiva through Sunday night at their home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to either Teenline at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Box 48750, Los Angeles, CA 90048; or City of Hope Hematology Research Fund at 1500 East Duarte Road, Duarte, CA 91010.

A man's family is a testimony of his character. Of Dennis Rose's many accomplishments, we in Honolulu can add that his son, Andrew Rose, is a knowledgeable, subtle and exciting teacher of art and oil painting at the Honolulu Academy of Art. Andrew's classes are known for their "chemistry" in that a mini-community springs up in class as the students bounce off of each other with their ideas about art spearheaded by Andrew's suggestions. I am sure that Dennis Rose's community-minded life has been a tremendous influence on his son.
