Dorothy Kemps Obituary

Kemps, Dorothy J.
February 16, 1916 - March 20, 2010
Affectionately known as "Dottie" to her family and friends, she was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Frank and Lois Jennings. Moved to Glendale in 1929 where she met her future husband, William Worth Kemps (aka "Bud") at Hoover High School; they were married in 1935. They had three children, Carol Anne Fox, William Worth Kemps, Jr., and Douglas Henry Kemps (married to Rochelle Kemps). Dottie enjoyed her many years of community service providing leadership to the Community Chest, Glendale Committee for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Encore, the Hollywood Bowl Women's Committee, the Burbank First United Methodist Church, and the Women's Committee for KCET.
After the children were grown, she went to Glendale College and UCLA earning her B.A. degree in Sociology in 1969. In 1973, she was invited to be the first Director of Volunteer Operations for KCET, Channel 28, where she spent twenty wonderful years. She retired in 1993. When Bud passed away in 2002, they had celebrated sixty-seven years of marriage and lived in their north Allen Avenue home for sixty-five years. During her retirement, she enjoyed traveling and being with her friends in PEO.
She leaves behind eight grandchildren (Aaron Fox, Mimi Fox, Joshua Fox, Benjamin Fox, William Worth Kemps III, John Kemps, Alison Kemps, and Michael Kemps) and eight great grandchildren. She is survived by her younger brother, Dr. Walter G. Jennings, of El Dorado Hills, CA.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 17th, at 3:00 p.m. at Rolling Hills United Methodist Church, 26438 S. Crenshaw Blvd., Rolling Hills Estates, with a reception to follow at the home of Michael and Gemma Kemps in Palos Verdes Estates. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to KCET or Rolling Hills United Methodist Church.

Dottie, I have missed you all these years, and now I find that I can't tell you in person. Thought counts. Here's to all the fun we had all those years ago! You are always special to the people you touched.

As volunteers for KCET, we considered Dottie not only a supervisor, but a friend. When we got married, she was invited to our wedding, but could not attend. Why? Because it was Glendale night at the Hollywood Bowl, another of her many causes. Dottie Kemps lived to serve. Both our lives were enriched by knowing her and she will missed by us. For a dozen years my life was enriched by Dottie's warm smile and caring as we worked on project for KCET. Oh those Pledge Drives -- when the lights were dimmed, the volunteeres individually thanked and younger staff were wiped out, Dottie would be seen cleaning up the kitchen and organizing for the next day's set-up. All without a one hair out of place while wearing high heels.
She spoiled the KCET staff with daily "goodies" -- home made cookies, candy, or other special treats. Her smile brightened the day fopr everyone she met. How fortunate we were to have been part of her life.
To her family my wife Pat and I send our kindest thoughts at this sad time.
We all have been enriched by knowing Dottie. May she rest in peace with her beloved Bud.
