Ita Anderson Obituary

January 4, 1969 - January 2015 ita "Serenada" Anderson, 46, passed away at her home in West Los Angeles. A native of Kingston, Jamaica, she also lived in England, Montreal, New Orleans, and Detroit before moving to Los Angeles. She graduated with a degree in computer science from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where she was also active in improvisational theater. She became a senior business analyst, overseeing a variety of major projects at financial institutions and at the university level. She was a talented programmer and web designer who built numerous websites devoted to her interests. She was a martial arts expert, artist, provocateuse, and founding member of the Pink Gingham Junta. ita was known for inspiring women to train in self-defense, her encyclopedic knowledge of comic books, her quest for the perfect gimlet, and that one time she saved a small boy from being crushed by an SUV at Urth Caffé. Her contribution to fandom communities continues to reverberate. She is survived by her parents, retired Jamaican Ambassador Herschel Dale Anderson and Professor Norma Anderson of Kingston, Jamaica; her beloved sister Dr. Moji Anderson, also of Kingston; and hundreds of dear friends all over the world. Ita was a very special person and a client that I enjoyed working with in placing her with 2 of my clients as a Business Systems Analyst and Project Manager. She always had a quiet glow about her and was considered a true professional. She worked out quite often at Krav Maga in West LA which was in the same building as my office. I will always have find memories of working with her.

She is truly missed and I consider myself blessed to have met and worked with her.

I can only reiterate what's already been said here. Ita was (and how weird it is to type 'was' in relation to Ita) kinda, fierce, funny, charming, smart, engaging. She touched so many people with her wit, discipline and intellect. You are missed, Ita.

Love you, ita. Every time I see a picture of my granddaughter - born within a few days of your birthday - I see something of you in her eyes. Her birth and your death are inextricably connected.

What is remembered, lives. And there's no way anyone could ever forget you. So you live. And we're all richer for that.

Your tiny copy of "The Art Of War" never leaves me. It lives in a zip compartment inside my purse. We will never not love you and miss you. And I will never forgive the universe for the loss of you.

ita (lowercase i only) challenged me, supported me, encouraged me, inspired me, and sometimes infuriated me (we never did see eye to eye on a few points of Winchester canon). I was privileged to be her friend. My deepest condolences to her family, whom she loved fiercely, and to her friends, who are missing her so very much right now.

Strong and exultant.
