Jean Burggren has been widely recognized as a knowledgeable, professional wine writer and editor. She began her career at Patterson?s Beverage Journal in 1967, where she learned to appreciate and understand the beverage and publishing business, and then with Beverage Industry News. In her over 45 year career, she also wrote for many publications including the LA Times, the in-house ?Under Glass? for the Bonaventure Hotel, South Coast Wine Magazine, Beverage Media based in New York, and the Southern Beverage Journal based in Florida. She also did wine consulting for restaurants, including the Brown Derby in Hollywood.
Jean was a long time member of the Southern California Restaurant Writers (as well as the California Restaurant Writers) for over 30 years. She held an office with the Los Angeles chapter of the World Association of the Alcoholic Beverage Industry (WAABI) when it was active in California. Other organizations in which she participated in are the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine (Master Lady), LiOrdre de Coteaux de Champagne, Gold Pennant Gourmet Food and Wine Society, California Prestige Wine Society, Wine and Spirits Importers, and was a member of Bon Appetite?s wine judging panel. She also judged at many prestigious wine competitions, both locally and in Europe on a regular basis. As a wine editor and judge, she was afforded the opportunity to tour many California wine regions including Livermore, Monterey, Temecula, Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Santa Barbara, and the Central coast. She visited the wine regions in Italy, Austria, Spain, France, Australia, Germany, and Uruguay. She also participated in educational seminars, including Cal Poly. Jean was involved in assisting beverage industry sponsored charity events including the Christermon Foundation, Make A Wish Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis, Meals On Wheels, and many more.
Jean passed away peacefully on September 6, 2010. Funeral services are private. The family requests in lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to one of Jean?s favorite charities.
