Jules MEYERS Obituary

MEYERS, Jules "Jay" Aug. 10, 1936 - Dec. 1, 2010 Long time Beverly Hills resident, passed away after a long and courageous battle with Parkinsons Disease. Jules died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by the family he loved so deeply, his wife Carole, daughter Lisa and granddaughter Alexandria. Jules was known among his peers as an Icon in the Automobile Industry, an innovator without exception. There was nothing of importance that he overlooked in his quest for excellence. A glimpse into his world would look like this: At sixteen he attended High School on the 4-four plan while continuing to work as well. At eighteen, while attending college he opened a Sports Car operation and then opened a wholesale automobile business which grew to such large proportions that it became the largest wholesale operation west of Chicago. The list goes on and other things followed in rapid succession, and by the time Jules was ready to become a new car dealer he had already done everything else in the business and had a vast diversified portfolio in all phases of the automobile business, which now included his Daily Rent A Car and Leasing business.
Based on his reputation and expertise in the automotive industry, General Motors awarded Jules a dealership...and he became the youngest General Motors dealer at that time. Along with his Jules Meyers Pontiac dealership other dealerships followed. People still remember the hundreds of Pontiacs parked up and down the railroad tracks on Santa Monica Blvd. with the license plate inserts that read: "Follow The Leader to Jules Meyers Pontiac"...and they did. When Jules was interested in making a "go" of something, no one could do it better. Jules took the Stutz Blackhawk from virtual obscurity and created what was considered at that time to be the most affluent, most expensive and the most daring Motor Car of the 1970's. It was friend Elvis Presley on whom Jules bestowed the honor of becoming the first owner of the Stutz Blackhawk. The dynamics between Jules and Elvis and the Stutz were something to see. Later Jules collaborated on something very special for Elvis. Other friends of Jules became Stutz owners such as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Lucille Ball, Dick Martin, Robert Goulet, Isacc Hayes and others. Jules had built the Stutz into a celebrity Motor Car and because it was a limited edition its ownership had even more importance. Jules kept the ownership as special as the people themselves. He founded and built various factories throughout the United States, primarily manufacturing convertibles as a secondary manufacturer to General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. He also built his American Custom Coachworks, Ltd. into the largest Limousine manufacturing company in the world, at that time. His entrepreneurial spirit will not be lost on future generations, because Jules told his wife Carole and daughter Lisa of the next venture he would have gone on to do, and they just might follow in his footsteps. Along the way he was a member of many organizations and Boards including YPO-G. Others have tried to emulate him and his style but, to no avail...he was unique unto himself. His contagious laughter and uncompromising zest for life, along with his handsome, boyish good looks only added to his charisma. If Jules had never been born, we would have had to invent him...he was that unique...a true original. Jules is survived by his beloved wife Carole, adored daughter Lisa Meyers-Kunis (Murray Kunis) and cherished granddaughter Alexandria. Along with his Aunt Claire Gordon and all the Gordon family cousins, and cousins Joyce and Bob Cormack, Joe Cormack, Ilene Murdock (Doug), Jessie Sheehan (Mike). Joan and Murray Griesman, Dr. Richard Greisman, Debbie Ritchie, Dr. Michael Meyers and the New York cousins. Special thank you to all his care givers but, most importantly to Nique, Jennifer, Charlie, Christine, Toshimi and John. Services will be held Sunday, December 5, 2010 at 10 A.M. at Hillside Memorial Park, 1-800-576-1994.

I worked for Jules in the late sixties and early seventies. I served in the positions of Parts Manager, General Parts & Service Manager and Controller. Jules provided me many opportunities to learn alll aspects of the automobile business which allowed me to go on to be a Chevrolet Dealer and to found a leasing company, Central Sales & Leasing. I shall be ever grateful for the confidence he showed in me and the various kindnesses he sent my way.

I worked for Jay in the early nineties and that's when I really learned the industry. I can remember the first time I saw his desk with all the message slips and he never sat down! My deepest sympathies to you, Lisa and your mom, Carole. As is said in the Greek Orthodox service, "May His Memory Be Eternal".

To the Meyers Family

Although my wife Damina wrote a message on behalf of our family, I have more to say. While it's easy to use the words "one of a kind" to describe a person, from my perch those words apply to Jules in the most positive of ways. From the moment I met Jules, Carole and the kids, I was instantly embraced by them. The warmth, hospitality and joy that I experienced with Jules and his family is rare. While there has been a distance in miles (west coast for the Meyers - - east coast for the Greifs - - we have always thought of you as extended family. Although the frequency of encounters were far less than we would have hoped for, the quality of them are such that I remember each and every time that we were together. While the passing of Jules is so sad (my dad past in early 2010 so I can empathize with the pain), the joy that was experienced by those who had the pleasure of his company will eventually subsume the sadness and grief.

Our hearts break for a beautiful family’s loss of a loving husband, father, uncle and dear friend to all. I am honored to know this family for thirty years, Jules was a special man. He was an innovator in the automobile industry (loved those cars), a flair for dressing (white pants with anchors), a passion for the water and boats, a great sense of humor and a heavy foot behind the wheel (marky, did we just pass a cop). He always treated me as family, as if I was a son, he was always there for me and a great advisor. he was more than a friend. We laughed and shared Holidays, Birthdays, Boating, Trips (where are the animals at this zoo) I love you Jules and will miss you. My family sends their deepest condolence. From Marky, I send you love and prayer during this time. Jules will be missed, but never forgotten in our hearts and memory. With Love, Marky.

Lisa - Your father was an incredible man, husband, father, grandfather, & friend. My fondest memory of him was when you and your family took us for a sunset cruise aboard your yacht. The stars were aligned that evening and I will forever cherish his smile. Jules was always quick with a kind word and a warm embrace. The world is a sadder place without him. We love you guys. Dear Jules,

Over 25 years ago you and Carole welcomed me into your lives and treated me like another daughter. {Thank God I loved my parents so much or you would have had another daughter! oy!} I spent so many of the "formative" years with you and your family. I have so many incredible memories, so many unbelievable stories, both good and not so good...but without them, I can honestly say I would not be the person I am today. So, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you!

I know you are now watching over your girls, Carole, Lisa, Alexandria, {and Murray too) with Coconut sitting by your side and I know, because you were a part of their lives, they will be okay.

I hope you have found the Peace you so deserve.

I love you.
Melinda

Please except my condolences on Jay's passing.

Jay and I had a long distant friendship for over 22 years. Except on rare occasions he was out of sight but never out of mind.

The Meyers made feel like part of their extended family. I hope that never changes.

Jay may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Jay sold me my first limo in 1988 a white/burgandy Lincoln Towncar Stretch, he said Todd " This Limo Is Top of The Line It will make you Money" It was a beauty, that year the design was "side bars" not a TV center bar, he built the first side bar cars. It was so exciting for me to visit the ACC offices on Sunset Bl and see all the cars parked in the garage, the cool pictures on the walls of Jay and his accomplishments. Kevin Brady was the salesman, and Jay was the best ! I will miss him. Todd Bernstein
