Leon GAINEN Obituary

GAINEN, Leon
July 5, 1923 - October 31, 2010
Leon Gainen was born on July 5, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York and died peacefully October 31, 2010 in San Pedro, CA. A loving family man, avid sports fan, and frequent traveler, he remained active until his death. His memory survives in the hearts and minds of his beloved sister, children, fourteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, numerous lifelong friends, and in his generous gifts to San Pedro's Temple Beth-El.

After completing military service in WWII, Leon married Beatrice and graduated from George Washington University. While working for the U.S. Bureau of Standards in the late 40's, he transferred to a new division: the Computer Department. Here, he worked as one of the first programmers for early computers. In 1955, he moved to California with his wife and 5 children, purchased the current family home in San Pedro, and went to work for the Rand Corporation. He worked with several aerospace industry companies as a Systems Analyst up until 1970 when he took a two-year contract to work with Israeli Aircraft in Israel.

In 1976, Beatrice passed away, leaving 5 children and Leon's first 7 grandchildren. In 1978 he married Phyllis Blumsack whose three children he embraced as his own. During their time together, 7 more grandchildren were born. They enjoyed family and traveling the world together until she passed away in 1994.

Leon donated generously to Temple Beth-El over the last several years, most recently to fund conversion of the entire facility to solar energy. The project started the day after he passed. For those wishing to honor Leon, contributions can be made to the Rabbi Discretionary Fund at Temple Beth-El for a marker that is being designed to commemorate his gift.

A Community Memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, November 27 at 5:45 at Temple Beth-El in San Pedro. All are welcome.

What a loving and fitting tribute to your dear father. We enjoyed the time we spent with him but had no idea he had such an amazing and illustrious career. What a great guy!! He embodied the meaning of the word “Mensch.” While he will be greatly missed, his brains, generous humanitarian sprit and kindness lives on in his family.
