LABAND, Francine G. (Mrs. Walter) Died peacefully at her home in West Covina on January 4, 2010, in the company of her family. Widow of Walter H. Laband. Mother to Stephen, Kathleen (Berthold), Pierre, Patrick, and Veronique (Siggins). Proud and caring "Bonne Maman" to fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Born Francine Georgette Lombard she was the fourth daughter in a family of six girls and grew up in Versailles, France. She studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and later became a MASH unit nurse for the final Allied drive into Germany. Following the war she met and married Walter Laband, a British Army Intelligence Officer serving in Versailles. After their honeymoon they settled in Covina, California. Although she became a world traveler she also kept close ties to her five sisters in France, and visited them at least once each year. A local resident for sixty-three years, she and her husband Walter also purchased a home in Lake Arrowhead in 1951. Mrs. Laband enjoyed her summers there when her children, grandchildren, and friends would visit. A patron of the arts as well as a generous donor to charities and institutions of higher learning, she found consolation in her faith and family. In recognition for her generosity Mrs. Laband was knighted a Dame of Malta, a Dame of the Holy Sepulcher, and a Dame of St. Gregory by the Vatican.
A Mass will be held Sat., Jan. 9, 2010 at 12 noon, at Sacred Heart Church, 344 W. Workman St., in Covina. In lieu of flowers a charitable donation can be made to Serenity Hospice in Claremont or Sacred Heart Fathers of La Verne, or to a charity of your choice. Custer Christiansen Mortuary (626) 331-8231

I will never forget "Tante Francine's" enormous generosity, her discretion, her elegance, her sense of duty... and last but not least her wonderful (sometimes very cheeky) sense of humour ! I feel very, very blessed to have been a little part of her life. My thoughts are with all her family and friends who miss her and will keep her alive in their thoughts.

I will always remember the joyful and wonderful times my family shared with Walter, Francine and the entire Leband family at their magical, wonderland vacation home in Lake Arrowhead. She and Walter were a unique couple and had a special relationship with their children and everyone that was so fortunate to have been blessed with their company. One comical memory I distinctly remember as a teen was when Francine smoked a cigarette. She would take a puff and continue about her business running about the house and entertaining, but would never flick the ash. She would continue to smoke and allow the ash to precariously burn and curl all the way down to the butt with everyone staring anxiously awaiting to see if the the ash would fall off and start a fire on the rug . But it never did. She was, as always in total control of the situation. I shall remember her fondly as a truly one-of-a-kind. God only takes good people and she was one on the kindest, selfless, most generous and gracious persons that I have ever had the pleasure to spend time with in my youth.
