Mary Carroll Obituary

September 6, 1920 - February 13, 2014 Mary Heinzelman Carroll (Lewis), a long-time Newport Beach and Dana Point resident and beloved mother and grandmother, died Thursday, February 13, from complications related to old age. She was 93. Carroll was born Mary Catherine Heinzelman on September 6, 1920 in Bellville, Illinois. Her father, Edmund Gooding Heinzelman, and uncle developed the first roller bearing for The Timken Company, owned by Carroll's great uncle Henry Timken. The invention later became known as the Timken roller bearing, a technology famous for its use in all major industries around the world. In 1933, her father, mother, and three siblings moved to Pasadena, California, where she attended Pasadena High School. After graduating in 1938, she attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she studied psychology and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Carroll graduated UCLA magna cum laude in 1942 with a degree in psychology. She was also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. In 1942, she married James (Jimmy) Joseph Carroll Jr. Jimmy Carroll served in the Army during World War II and the couple lived variously in Washington, D.C. and New York City. In 1945, they moved back to California to settle in Newport Beach. Carroll soon earned her decorator's license and gave birth to her first and only son, Jamie Carroll in 1946. Carroll was a devoted and supportive mother, and in 1976 became a grandmother. She loved to have fun and was magical to her grandchildren, who both adored her. In the early 1980s, Carroll divorced though continued to live in Newport Beach, and work as an interior decorator. She was also an avid tennis player. She later met and married Arthur Lewis, a theatre director and producer (both on Broadway and in London) and Hollywood movie director and producer. The couple enjoyed a number of wonderful years together before Arthur Lewis passed away seven years ago. Carroll continued to reside in Dana Point until her death last week. She is survived by her son, Jamie Carroll; two granddaughters, Caitlin Carroll and Justine Campbell; and two stepsons, Dr. James Lewis, who now resides in Dana Point, and Peter Lewis of St. Andrews, Scotland.
