David New Obituary

David Matthew New, of Manhattan Beach, passed away on September 27, at the age of 54, surrounded by his family, after a brief and difficult struggle against cancer. He was born on February 9, 1960, in Norfolk, Virginia, but spent his early years in Gainesville, Florida. He received his BA degree from Yale University and his MBA from UCLA; in between these degrees, he spent time in Osaka, Japan, where he met his loving wife, Atsuko Fukuda, with whom, after traveling widely in Asia, he returned to the states and eventually settled in the Los Angeles area. David had more than 25 years of investment and consulting experience in the L. A. area, including years with California Edison, FMC Corporation, Wurts & Associates, Asset Strategy Consulting, and Dimensional Fund Advisors, where he was a Vice President with responsibility for global consultant relations. Since 2008 he was a partner and Managing Director of Client Relationships with Dalton Investments. David was able to balance his financial world with an enduring love of art, music, books, and traveling with Atsuko, he was dedicated to passing these loves to their two children, both with museum-centered vacations abroad and a large carefully chosen library at home. He is the beloved husband of Atsuko Fukuda of thirty years; father of Hannah Atsuki and Kohei Isaac, of Manhattan Beach; son of Joan and Melvyn New; brother of Carl Samuel New; uncle of Emily and Felicia, Michael, Brennan, and Kellen, of Gainesville, Florida. A gathering of friends to celebrate David's life will be held on Wednesday, October 8, at Palos Verdes Country Club from 4 to 6PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to Heal the Bay, 1444 9th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401.

David brought sophistication into my little country world - he brought books when he visited while I was playing with frogs.....David, Carl, me and Jason ran over many an acre in Nash County - laughing and having not a clue how life may throw any of us a cruel curve. He is admired, loved, respected and most of all ... missed.

Please accept our deepest sympathy and our sincere prayers for all of the family. My memories of David are sweet ones made at the home of his maternal grandmother and grandfather Lottie and Fred Cockrell. My son Jason and David were born one month apart and as cousins always had great fun during visits there. My family sends deepest love to all of David's family. God bless you all

I have spent a lot of the past week thinking of David - of how much I looked up to him as a child - this sophisticated, funny, brilliant older cousin who would come and stay with us on holidays. He and my mom would write to each other a la Bertie Wooster and his Aunt Dahlia - introducing me to PG Wodehouse. He would come on holidays with his friends and they would let me tag along on their outings even though I'm sure I was often annoying. When I was 11 I remember David sitting up with me late one snowy night and teaching me algebra in preparation for the citywide Hunter HS entrance exam, something that would change my life forever. He was one of the heroes of my childhood and I will miss him so much.
