BENJAMIN CATE Obituary

September 28, 1931 - September 26, 2014 Benjamin W. Cate former TIME Magazine bureau chief and foreign correspondent in the U.S and abroad, long time resident of Cheviot Hills in W. LA, passed away Sept. 26 at the Marian hospital in Santa Maria,Ca. He closed his beautiful blue eyes looking at his loving wife Viviane at his bedside. Benjamin was fighting illness since longtime. A memorial and blessing was held intimately at his wishes in a simple but very touching way and followed by a cremation. A proud American Born in Paris in 1931, and France lover, Benjamin remembered the time he spent at the Manor of the Mallerie, a castle his parents owned in the 1940's, near Dinan, Brittany, and where a chapel is dedicated to the Americans soldiers who fell on the French soil in WWII. Working for TIME he covered and wrote about everything from space missions to the cold war, to politics and social issues. He was a skilled communicator, editor and public speaker. He is now reunited in the sky with his family, father Colonel Karl S. Cate, mother Josephine Wilson, brother Curtis, sister Elisabeth and uncle Curtis that he liked, founder of the Cate School in Ojai, Ca. Remember him in your prayers. RIP Benj I will always love you.

Benj, it will be one year today that you went to another world and left me orphan of you. I miss you deeply and hope you found heaven wherever you are, and that you think of me as I do of you. I will always love you.
Your wife Viviane.

Ben, I thought I had signed your book earlier, but there is no record. Nevertheless, you were the finest bureau chief I ever worked for & with in the news magazine business. I appreciated the selectiveness you reserved for photographers, & it mean't a great deal to me that I was on the receiving end of that selectiveness of respect. I remember our last lunch together. Thank you for being a mentor, and good friend. You are deeply missed.

Very saddened to hear this news.

I had no choice but to stop what I was doing and take a moment to remember him. He was the epitome of strength to me and I always admired, if not slightly feared him!!! (However I'm sure the latter was due to my being a teenager at that time!)

Rest in peace
