I'm in the process of preparing a presentation based on a research article written by professor Medoff. I had to add his credentials and happened upon his obituary.
My deepest condolences to his family.

Mr. Medoff was a great teacher and his sense of humor was awesome. I got to know Mr. Medoff really well because I would show up early to wait to get into his class, he too would show up early and have to wait for the other class to let out before he could go in. We would talk and I would share the school paper with him to read and he would make humorous comments all the time we were leaning against the CSULB wall...we did this for 2 semesters because I made sure to take his advanced class the following semester right after the intro class.
I was hoping to find him to reconnect; I am very sad he has passed, even more so because I wanted to let him know what a positive impact he had on my life..not just from the education, but the time spent with him.
I am very sorry for his family's loss, I will miss him as well.

Today (8/27/16) is the 36th anniversary of my first day of college. My first college class that day was Dr. Medoff's ECON 100 class at Cal State Long Beach. I thought he was a great professor and learned a lot in his class. He was knowledgeable, engaging, and entertaining, making us laugh with some of his classic one-liners. I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences to your family for your loss.

I was an economics major at UCI from 1986-1990. I was lucky that I discovered Dr Medoff at the start of my freshman year. From the beginning I was hooked. Here was a professor who not only made the material easy to understand, but his great sense of humor made the classes fun. In my four years there, I took all the classes he offered, and to this day he's the only professor I remember by name.
When I graduated, he helped me get my first job by writing a letter of recommendation for me. It is something I will always be grateful to him for.
When I accidentally stumbled onto his obituary today, it made me sad to know that he can no longer share his gift of teaching. He was truly the best professor I've ever had. The world has lost a very special man. My condolences to the family.

I took several Dr. Medoff's Economic classes when attending UC Irvine from 1985-1989. After I took the first classes from him, I took several more just because I really enjoyed his class (even thought I was an engineering major) - I couldn't think of a better person to teach me about economics.
Saw the obituary in LA Times and I just want to express my condolences. He was special - a great teacher with a wicked sense of humor. Always generous, all the folks I know who took his class loved him.
He left a lasting legacy - my college experience would never be the same without attending his 9:00 am class.

I've known Shane since 2000 and I consider him a brother. I met Marshall shortly after meeting Shane, I was a struggling MBA student who needed some serious assistance with my macroeconomics course. Dr. Medoff sat with me and helped quite a bit, and always had kind and encouraging words whenever we met afterwards. I was very sad to hear of his passing. I won't ever forget his generosity and kind spirit.

I was very saddened to see the
obituary column this morning in the LA Times. I found
Marshall to be one of the nicest and most thoughtful of all
my patients during the last 15 years that I got to know
him. While preparing for work this AM I was trying to
see if I could summarize my experience with both he and your
whole family... I settled on the single word
"Genuine". He was such a great person to engage
with; to talk to , to ask questions of and to share
experiences with. As the old saying goes, "the apples don't
fall far from the tree" and so it is with your whole family.
His great legacy in Economic, Education and Academia can
only be surpassed by his helping to produce such a fine
family. I will miss him greatly. I love you all and
wish you the best.

I was a co-author on many articles with Marshall Medoff. He was a truly outstanding scholar. I learned a lot from him and his passion for research was a genuine inspiration to me. He will be greatly missed by scholars both at home and abroad. The only consolation to his passing is that he's in a better place now.

I am a graduate student who has recently become very
inspired by and interested in your father's research. I was
looking him up, and was so sorry to learn about your loss. I
just wanted to say how important your father's work is, and
hope that it provides some slight comfort at this time to
know that he will continue to impact and inspire people.

I have been close friends with Marshall's son since the 7th grade. Marshall had that rare combination of intellect and wit. When we were young he had the colleges picked out where each of us should attend. And he never passed on the opportunity to tell us where we were supposed to apply. I was Harvard. (Unfortunately for me, didn't happen).
Marshall had a compassionate side as well. I remember the time when he took in a stray dog.
Marshall had the uncanny ability to captivate an audience when he was speaking about his favorite subject the economy. Even as kids we listened with interest whenever he spoke on the subject. To put this in perspective, let's fast forward to his son's wedding. I went looking for Marshall to speak with him. I finally found him outside, surrounded by about 15 people. What was going on? Were they trying to shake him down? No! He was in his element, holding court on the state of the economy. The audience (which now included me) was earnestly taking in every word of his sage advice. All we were missing were notepads and pencils. He tried a couple times to stop and head back to the party, but we wouldn't let him. He was surrounded. Everyone admired Marshall's passion and respected his wisdom.

I worked in Economics at CSULB in 1998-2000 and again in 2013-2014 as the administrative assistant. I did a lot of typing for him with his many published papers during that time. He called me his writing "muse" because I believed so much in his research, which we would discuss at length. Most recently, he had a paper published in July 2014. He gave me a copy with the following caption handwritten, "In research, as in life, no person is an island. This article would not have been possible without the superb work skills and work ethic of Diane Stein. Her contribution to this article is immeasurable. I dedicate this article to her with my profound gratitude." It's always nice to be acknowledged and I was so grateful to him for always letting me know how much he appreciated me. I will miss his humor, his Chicago accent, his smile. When I left the Econ department to another department, he came into my new office and pounded his fist on the counter and shouted, "You STOLE her from us! This is so unfair!" We all got a big kick out of that. To the family: You have lost an incredible man, truly a presence in the world. I am so sorry for your loss.
